Larvicidal and repellent effects of essential oils on the brown dog tick (Rhipicephalus sanguineus Sensu lato) with description of new larval repellent activity test method.

The aim of this research was to investigate the larvicidal and repellent effects of essential oils (EOs) obtained from two Lamiaceae plant species, Origanum minutiflorum O. Schwarz & P.H. Davis and Dorystoechas hastata Boiss. & Heldr. ex Bentham, both endemic to Turkey, on Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. Latreille (Acari: Ixodidae). The study also introduces a new test method that can be used to assess the repellent effects against ticks. Both plant EOs exhibited the highest larvicidal activity against brown dog tick larvae after 24 h and LC50 and LC90 values were determined as 0.101% and 0.125%…

Chemical Compositions of Essential Oil Extracted from Eight Thyme Species and Potential Biological Functions.

Thymus is an herbaceous perennial or subshrub of the Lamiaceae family and is widely distributed worldwide. Essential oils extracted from thymus have attracted much attention, owing to their potential biological functions. Here, we evaluated the chemical compositions of eight thyme essential oils (TEOs) using gas chromatography mass spectrometry and assessed their antioxidant activity. The results showed that (1) the main components in eight TEOs were monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes (84.26-92.84%), and the chemical compositions of the TEOs were affected by the specie factor…

Targeted mutagenesis of CYP76AK2 and CYP76AK3 in Salvia miltiorrhiza reveals their roles in tanshinones biosynthetic pathway.

Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, belonging to Lamiaceae family, is one of the most important Chinese medicinal herbs. The dried roots, also called Danshen in Chinese, are usually used in the formula of Chinese traditional medicine due to the bioactive constituents known as phenolic acids and tanshinones, which are a group of abietane nor-diterpenoid quinone natural products. Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) usually play crucial roles in terpenoids synthesis, especially in hydroxylation processes. Up to now, several important P450 enzymes, such as CYP76AH1, CYP76AH3, CYP76AK1, CYP71D373, and CYP71D375,…

Rosmarinic acid protects against 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity in zebrafish embryos.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is an extract that can be obtained from Lamiaceae herbs and the Boraginaceae family. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of RA on 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-induced dopaminergic neurotoxicity in zebrafish embryos. Embryos were challenged with MPTP and then were treated with RA or brusatol (a Nrf2 inhibitor). Locomotor activity of zebrafish was recorded using a video camera. The swimming distance was analyzed with SMART 3.0 software. Tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry, reactive oxygen species (ROS), glutathione (GSH), and malondialde…

Biosynthesis of bioactive diterpenoids in the medicinal plant Vitex agnus-castus.

Vitex agnus-castus L. (Lamiaceae) is a medicinal plant historically used throughout the Mediterranean region to treat menstrual cycle disorders, and is still used today as a clinically effective treatment for premenstrual syndrome. The pharmaceutical activity of the plant extract is linked to its ability to lower prolactin levels. This feature has been attributed to the presence of dopaminergic diterpenoids that can bind to dopamine receptors in the pituitary gland. Phytochemical analyses of V. agnus-castus show that it contains an enormous array of structurally related diterpenoids and, as su…
