Second Language Word Learning through Repetition and Imitation: Functional Networks as a Function of Learning Phase and Language Distance.

Introduction and Aim: Repetition and imitation are among the oldest second language (L2) teaching approaches and are frequently used in the context of L2 learning and language therapy, despite some heavy criticism. Current neuroimaging techniques allow the neural mechanisms underlying repetition and imitation to be examined. This fMRI study examines the influence of verbal repetition and imitation on network configuration. Integration changes within and between the cognitive control and language networks were studied, in a pair of linguistically close languages (Spanish and French), and compar…

Growth of reading skills in children with a history of specific language impairment: the role of autistic symptomatology and language-related abilities.

Individuals with a history of specific language impairment (SLI) often have subsequent problems with reading skills, but there have been some discrepant findings as to the developmental time course of these skills. This study investigates the developmental trajectories of reading skills over a 9-year time-span (from 7 to 16 years of age) in a large sample of individuals with a history of SLI. Relationships among reading skills, autistic symptomatology, and language-related abilities were also investigated. The results indicate that both reading accuracy and comprehension are deficient but that…

The curriculum of practice: a conceptual framework for speech-language therapy and audiology practice with a black African first language clientele.

This paper discusses the use of a conceptual framework (i.e., the curriculum of practice) to guide the transformation of professional practice toward equitable service provision, rooted in a research finding that South African Speech-Language Therapy & Audiology has a favourable service bias toward White English/Afrikaans first language speakers (Pillay, 1997b). Three perspectives of practice are discussed, i.e., the official, espoused and actual perspectives. Also, the various elements of practice are reviewed, and include clinical practice activities, resources and their utilization, profess…

Reframing Statistical Learning Through Natural Language Paradigms.

Scholars propose some new directions for researching statistical learning (SL), including the need to adopt stimuli with greater ecological validity. The language sciences are moving in these directions. Studies investigating adult SL after short exposure to an unfamiliar (spoken or signed) language show that SL can occur from richer, continuous, multimodal input, suggesting that learners are able to track multiple statistics. This makes it more plausible that SL operates in naturalistic, interactive situations. This paradigm shift can potentially extend our understanding of the exact ways in …

Hi-LSplat: Hierarchical 3D Language Gaussian Splatting.

Modeling 3D language fields with Gaussian Splatting for open-ended language queries has recently garnered increasing attention. However, recent 3DGS-based models leverage view-dependent 2D foundation models to refine 3D semantics but lack a unified 3D representation, leading to view inconsistencies. Additionally, inherent open-vocabulary challenges cause inconsistencies in object and relational descriptions, impeding hierarchical semantic understanding. In this paper, we propose Hi-LSplat, a view-consistent Hierarchical Language Gaussian Splatting work for 3D open-vocabulary querying. To achie…

Language Supervised Multi-Camera Multi-Object Tracking.

Recent multi-camera multi-object tracking (MCMOT) algorithms are primarily trained using per-detection identity annotations, which are complicated to obtain. In contrast, labeling a language description per-object is a more natural and human-friendly way. In this paper, we explore MCMOT in a language-supervised manner (LS-MCMOT) and propose a novel approach LaVST, which performs language-to-vision weakly-supervised learning based on reliable pseudo-labels generated via tracklet-level cross-modality matching. In addition, we design an ID-aware projection self-correction mechanism to correct ina…

Orthographic representations in American Sign Language fingerspelling.

This study examined fingerspelling accuracy and error patterns in deaf American Sign Language (ASL) signers and written spelling in hearing English speakers to investigate how orthographic representations are shaped by phonological, visual, and motor encoding strategies. Deaf participants (n = 39) completed a fingerspelling repetition task, while hearing participants (n = 35) completed a written dictation task using the same word and pseudoword stimuli. While overall accuracy did not differ significantly between groups, deaf participants exhibited qualitatively distinct error patterns, includi…

Language-supervised electrocardiogram interpretation with vision transformer.

PURPOSE: Most artificial intelligence models for electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation rely on task-specific supervised learning, requiring dedicated labeled datasets for each diagnostic task and limiting scalability across diverse cardiac conditions. This study investigated whether vision-language learning from paired ECG recordings and summary reports could enable transferable ECG representations without task-specific supervised training. METHODS: We developed ECG-VLM, a contrastive vision-language model consisting of a Transformer-based image encoder and a text encoder, trained on 800,034…

The language we speak amid COVID-19.

The language we speak shapes our perceptions of reality. In this paper, we shed light on the fact that by inventing and normalizing phrases such as the "UK variant", "Chinese virus", or the "Spanish flu", along with the widespread use of war metaphors, we are not only endorsing narratives that could undermine international collaborations and deepen divisions within society, harming people's mental health, but also distracting the public's attention from the most important issue amid pandemics-how to stall or stem transmission in a timely matter. Furthermore, we also make a call to action for m…

Sign language use in healthcare: professionals' insight.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Communication using sign language (SL) between health care providers (HCPs) and deaf and/or hearing-impaired (DHI) patients was reported to be difficult and oftentimes results in a compromised delivery of quality health care to patients. This study surveyed Saudi health care providers on their perception of SL knowledge on the provision of high-quality care to DHI patients. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study among HCPs in different health and primary care centers in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire was distributed officially by the Department of S…

Plain Language Summary: Age-Related Hearing Loss.

The plain language summary explains age-related hearing loss to patients, families, and care partners. The summary is for any patient aged 50 years and older, families, and care partners. It is based on the 2024 "Clinical Practice Guideline: Age-Related Hearing Loss." This plain language summary is a companion publication to the full guideline, which provides greater detail for clinicians. Guidelines and their recommendations may not apply to every patient, but they can be used to find best practices and quality improvement opportunities.

Speech-language pathologists' perceptions of childhood bilingualism.

The value of learning multiple languages has increased in the past 20 years. Despite this, some professionals continue to provide misinformation about bilingualism to many families around the United States, resulting in recommendations of implementing a monolingual approach for children. This study investigated the perceptions held by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding childhood bilingualism. A total of 320 SLPs completed a survey stating their perceptions on childhood bilingualism for typically developing children and children with disabilities. Based on the number of responses, 29…

Language and developmental plasticity after perinatal stroke.

The mature human brain is lateralized for language, with the left hemisphere (LH) primarily responsible for sentence processing and the right hemisphere (RH) primarily responsible for processing suprasegmental aspects of language such as vocal emotion. However, it has long been hypothesized that in early life there is plasticity for language, allowing young children to acquire language in other cortical regions when LH areas are damaged. If true, what are the constraints on functional reorganization? Which areas of the brain can acquire language, and what happens to the functions these regions…

Language Matters - A Diabetes Canada Consensus Statement.

Language reflects and shapes our thoughts, feelings, behaviours and experiences and can have a profound impact on the lives of people with and at risk for diabetes. Inappropriate language has a negative impact on self-efficacy, well-being and confidence of people living with diabetes, can seriously undermine experiences with health-care providers and, more broadly, can contribute to diabetes stigma. To date, Diabetes Canada has had no formal position to facilitate positive and affirming attitudes towards diabetes, which is reflected by the use of more appropriate language around diabetes. This…

Genome sequencing for rightward hemispheric language dominance.

Most people have left-hemisphere dominance for various aspects of language processing, but only roughly 1% of the adult population has atypically reversed, rightward hemispheric language dominance (RHLD). The genetic-developmental program that underlies leftward language laterality is unknown, as are the causes of atypical variation. We performed an exploratory whole-genome-sequencing study, with the hypothesis that strongly penetrant, rare genetic mutations might sometimes be involved in RHLD. This was by analogy with situs inversus of the visceral organs (left-right mirror reversal of the he…

Facebook language predicts depression in medical records.

Depression, the most prevalent mental illness, is underdiagnosed and undertreated, highlighting the need to extend the scope of current screening methods. Here, we use language from Facebook posts of consenting individuals to predict depression recorded in electronic medical records. We accessed the history of Facebook statuses posted by 683 patients visiting a large urban academic emergency department, 114 of whom had a diagnosis of depression in their medical records. Using only the language preceding their first documentation of a diagnosis of depression, we could identify depressed patient…
