The symptoms, medical history, and treatment of 98 patients with cutaneous larva migrans (creeping eruption) who attended a travel-related-disease clinic during a period of 4 years are reviewed. This condition is caused by skin-penetrating larvae of nematodes, mainly of the hookworm Ancylostoma braziliense and other nematodes of the family Ancylostomidae. Despite the ubiquitous distribution of these nematodes, in the investigated group only travelers to tropical and subtropical countries were affected; 28.9% of the patients had symptoms for > 1 month, and for 24.5% the probable incubation peri…

Changes in proteins synthesised by the infective third-stage larvae (L3) of the filarial nematode Brugia pahangi were examined with respect to the temperature shift encountered by the parasite as it migrates from insect to mammal, and the presence of serum in the culture medium. While the synthesis of a number of polypeptides is regulated by the temperature shift of the L3 from 28 degrees C to 37 degrees C in vitro, there is no evidence that serum has any significant effect on protein synthesis. Two complexes of small acidic polypeptides (22-24 kDa and 18 kDa) are synthesised for a limited per…

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), employing antigens from Toxocara canis larvae and the absortion of suspected sera with Ascaris lumbricoides extracts was used in a seroepidemiological study performed in five municipalities of São Paulo State, Brazil (São Paulo, Campinas, Santos, Marília and Presidente Prudente) in order to determine the frequency of antibodies to Toxocara. In 2,025 blood samples collected, 806 proceeded from male subjects and 1,219 from females; 483 samples were collected from subjects under 15 years of age and the remaining 1,542 from subjects aged 15 years or ov…

An epidemiological study on toxocariasis was carried out in a zone of Western Spain (province of Salamanca) in dogs, soil and humans, comparing the simultaneous situations in urban and rural areas. The prevalence of infection in dogs was 29.4 to 33.1%, with little difference between the areas studied. The prevalence of Toxocara eggs in soil ranged from 3.7% in Salamanca city to 9% in rural areas. Seroprevalence in humans, as shown by Dot ELISA, was higher in children (8.5% in urban areas and 4.6% in rural areas) than in adults. The statistical significance of the correlations between prevalenc

The surface and excretory/secretory (ES) antigens of the infective, filariform larva (L3) of Strongyloides stercoralis were identified. These studies provide a basis for the purification of these proteins as diagnostic allergens for human strongyloidiasis. The Mr values of the surface and ES molecules were determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography, fluorography, or silver staining following the recovery of these molecules after the radiolabelling of living parasites. At least 10 surface proteins were radioiodinated extrinsically using chlorogly…

Two cases of asymptomatic visceral larva migrans (VLM) involving the myocardium, discovered during open heart surgery, are reported. Only 7 cases of VLM myocarditis were found in recent English publications. All 7 cases involved children, with most of the patients acutely ill. Our 2 asymptomatic cases, coupled with the high rate of positive serologic tests in the general population, stress the widespread nature of Toxocara canis infection in human and the large number of subclinical, undetected cases.

In hogs naturally infected with Taenia solium larvae (i.e., Cysticercus cellulosae), we studied the host response induced by antigens obtained from the larvae. Histopathological studies of cysticerci removed after 4 and 8 weeks of immunization showed an intense inflammatory reaction surrounding the larvae. The response was greater in the 8-week specimens. A dense layer of eosinophils was in close contact with the external membrane of the bladder wall and, in several cases, the eosinophils had infiltrated this tegument. Many eosinophils were seen in the spiral canal of larvae. This infiltration…

The clinical presentation of an 11-year-old boy with unilateral posterior internal ophthalmomyiasis is described. Ophthalmoscopy of the affected eye in this individual disclosed characteristic subretinal depigmented linear tracks and a larva within the vitreous. The intravitreal larva was retrieved successfully by pars plana vitrectomy and identified as the first instar of Cuterebra sp. (rodent botfly) by scanning electron microscopy. This was done by examining the external features of the larva by scanning electron microscopy and comparing them to scanning electron micrographs that were prepa…

Using the fluorescent antibody technique 84% of patients with severe hookworm infection and 74% of Nigerian blood donors have detecable antibodies that react with surface antigen of hookworm larvae. On the other hand only 24% of Nigerian medical students and 20% of Caucasians (Canadians) have such antibodies in their sera. It is suggested that while the results of tests on students may be due to the relatively infrequent contact with hookworm the antibody positivity in the Caucasians may be due to cross reaction with other related helminths. The titre of antibody produced in the hookworm infec…
