A 54-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for the treatment of a tumor of the right chest wall. Clinical examination revealed hypertension, hypokalemia, metabolic alkalosis, hyperaldosteronism and hyperreninemia. Computed tomography and an abdominal echogram indicated a tumor in the right phrenic area and two tumors in the retroperitoneum near the pancreas head. Leiomyosarcoma of the broad ligament (LBL) is a very rare tumor. Up to 1989, there had been only 7 cases reported in the English literature. During recent 12 years, we have had 15 cases of leiomyosarcoma in our department. Among them, there were two cases of LBL. The others were leiomyosarcoma of the uterine corpus. Uterine leiomyosarcomas are rare tumours and the results of treatment of advanced disease are poor. Ifosfamide and Adriamycin are both known to be active drugs in soft-tissue sarcomas. We present our experience using ifosfamide alone and in combination with Adriamycin in advanced or recurrent uterine leiomyosarcomas. Ifosfamide alone was given as a 24-h infusion at doses ranging from 5 to 7.5 g/m2, with mesna rescue. The authors report a new case of leiomyosarcoma of the oesophagus, and a review of the literature since 1960 (during this period almost every case has been resected). Twenty-two patients with leiomyosarcoma of the rectum (n = 19) or the anus (n = 3) were treated surgically at the Mayo Clinic from 1950 through 1985. The majority of tumors occurred in men (1.4:1.0) during the sixth and seventh decades of life. Leiomyosarcoma may arise as a primary tumor in the orbit, metastasize from distant sites to the orbit, extend into the orbit from the paranasal sinuses, or appear after radiation therapy to the orbit. A detailed clinicopathologic study of 21 patients with uterine leiomyosarcoma was undertaken. The diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma was made for those uterine smooth muscle tumors showing cellular atypia and 5-9 mitoses per 10 high-powered fields (M/10 HPF) and those with 10 or more M/10 HPF. Leiomyosarcoma of the small intestine is a rare tumor, comprising 0.2 per cent of all malignant tumors of the gastrointestinal tract. The charts of 28 patients were reviewed; the outstanding characteristics were a slow growing, but sometimes, fast growing locally malignant lesion, more than half being in the ileum. Leiomyosarcoma of the colon, excluding that of the rectum, is extremely rare. We report a case of leiomyosarcoma of the ascending colon with a brief review of literature.
