A new technique applicable to pediatric laparoscopic surgery: abdominal wall 'area lifting' with subcutaneous wiring.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the authors developed a unique method of laparoscopic surgery without pneumoperitoneum: "area lifting of the abdominal wall with subcutaneous wiring." METHODS: In this gasless procedure, the anterior abdominal wall is pulled upward by a pair of wires placed subcutaneously and held by thick sutures for "hanger lifting." Simultaneous lifting of a pair of subcutaneous wires across the abdomen, produces a wide, roof-shaped intraabdominal space sufficient for laparoscopic surgical procedures. The practical aspects of this gasless technique, as well as the authors' limited exp…

Mini Crestal Sinus Lift With Bone Grafting and Simultaneous Insertion of Implants in Severe Maxillary Conditions as an Alternative to Lateral Sinus Lift: Multicase Study Report of Different Techniques.

The present study evaluates the efficacy and clinical outcomes of crestal sinus lift techniques used to elevate the sinus floor simultaneously with bone grafting and implant placement as a possible and reproducible alternative to lateral sinus lift. Patients underwent different crestal sinus elevation techniques. The heterologous biomaterial was used as graft material, and multiple implants were placed simultaneously after sinus augmentation. Radiographic and clinical examinations were performed during follow-up. All procedures were successfully performed without any apparent perforation of th

Lateral Temporal Brow Lift: A 20-Year Experience and Surgical Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Rejuvenation of the upper third of the face is a key component of facial aesthetic surgery, as brow position and contour contribute significantly to perceptions of youth and expression. Age-related changes include forehead rhytids and brow descent, with the lateral brow often demonstrating the earliest and most pronounced ptosis. Multiple surgical techniques have been developed to address these changes, ranging from traditional open approaches to minimally invasive endoscopic methods. More recently, there has been a shift toward selective, anatomically tailored techniques that aim

Incidence of epithelial ingrowth following femtosecond laser LASIK flap lifts.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of epithelial ingrowth (EI) following femtosecond LASIK (f-LASIK) flap relift. METHODS: This retrospective case series enrolled patients who underwent post-refractive enhancement surgery at a single independent outpatient health facility in Canada. Patients 18 years or older who underwent refractive enhancement surgery between July 2021 and December 2022 were eligible. We excluded patients with a history of cataract or refractive lens exchange surgery. Follow-ups were conducted at 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 1 year postoperatively. The primary o

The Role of Concurrent Thigh Lifts in Obese Patients With Transfemoral Osseointegrated Prostheses.

BACKGROUND: Osseointegrated (OI) prostheses are a novel alternative solution for patients with lower-limb amputations. Plastic surgeons are becoming increasingly involved in providing concurrent thigh lifts (CTLs) to reduce soft tissue redundancy around the implant. Because of limited mobility, many patients present with higher body mass indexes (BMIs) and may benefit from CTL. This study aimed to evaluate outcomes in obese patients with OI prostheses who underwent CTL compared to those who did not. Additionally, we aimed to compare outcomes in patients with normal BMIs compared to obese patie

Time to lift the moratorium on IL-23 inhibitors for axial psoriatic arthritis.

The disappointment stemming from IL-23 inhibition failure in axial spondyloarthritis has resulted in expert panels extrapolating these results to axial psoriatic arthritis, with recommendations against the use of IL-23 inhibitors in this setting. However, post-hoc analyses of clinical trials show clinical improvements in axial psoriatic arthritis following treatment with ustekinumab, guselkumab, and risankizumab. A growing body of real-world evidence also shows substantial amelioration of spinal pain, related outcome measures, and imaging-detected inflammation. Despite negative trials, IL-23 i

Complete Platysma Muscle Suspension in Deep-Plane Face-Lift Surgery.

Deep-plane face-lift surgery is not new, having originally been described over 30 years ago; however, the technique has seen a recent surge in popularity. Although proponents emphasize its ability to deliver very natural results, critics often cite the possibility of additional risk of the procedure because of its technically challenging dissection in proximity to branches of the facial nerve and other critical structures. These risks are perhaps greatest when operating in what have historically been described as the "danger zones," particularly when releasing the zygomatic retaining ligaments

Classifying Maxillary Sinuses of Polish Patients for Sinus Lift: A Pilot Study.

To date, there is no systematic anatomical classification available that could help clinicians in choosing between the lateral and palatal approach in sinus lift procedures. The aim was to provide a simple-to-use and memorable classification of the maxillary sinus concerning the thickness of lateral and palatal walls to facilitate the most adequate choice for the window location during direct sinus floor elevation. Cone beam computed tomography scans were consecutively obtained for 200 maxillary sinuses of patients needing dental implant placement with potential maxillary sinus augmentation. T

Two cases of pelvic hematoma after prostatic urethral lift surgery.

INTRODUCTION: There are few reports of pelvic hematoma after prostatic urethral lift. Here, we report two cases of pelvic hematoma in Japan. CASE PRESENTATION: The first case was a 71-year-old man with benign prostatic hyperplasia who underwent prostatic urethral lift. Although the procedure was uneventful, he experienced lower abdominal pain the day after the operation. CT revealed a hematoma in the right pelvis; however, it was manageable with conservative treatment. The second case was a 68-year-old man. The procedure was uneventful; however, 6 days after the operation, a subcutaneous hema

How I Do It: The prostatic urethral lift for obstructive median lobes.

Millions of men in North America suffering from lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) are managed on medical therapy. Most patients, however, report poor adherence, and yet relatively few pursue more definitive surgical solutions. The Prostatic Urethral Lift (PUL) was designed to address many of the patient-identified barriers to surgery, namely iatrogenic sexual dysfunction, incontinence, lengthy recovery and postoperative catheterization. Randomized studies and large real world multicenter and database studies have demonstrated safety and effecti

The Impact of Comorbidities on Patient Outcomes in the Upper Body Lift: A Retrospective Review.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical and surgical weight loss options have improved over the past several decades resulting in an increased number of patients who present with body contour deformities. This review focuses on the upper truncal deformity. This deformity is discernable by its residual tissue laxity in the upper arm, back, lateral chest, and breast. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the morbidity of this procedure when these regions are treated in one operative setting. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients who underwent an upper body lift for truncal deformitie

Reduction Malarplasty With Subperiosteal Lift Via a Single Limited Temporal Incision.

INTRODUCTION: Different from Western culture, prominent zygoma and rectangular facial contour are deemed as unaesthetic and masculine in Asians. To achieve an ideal oval facial shape, reduction malarplasty is often performed. METHODS: Twenty-two eligible patients who underwent reduction malarplasty between November 2008 and December 2018 were reviewed. The reduction malarplasty involved repositioning of the osteotomized zygomatic arch and subperiosteal lift via a limited temporal incision. Photographs were collected both preoperatively and postoperatively. Complications and postoperative outc

Guided suturing technique for midface lift through minimal temporal incision.

BACKGROUND: The midface has been a difficult zone to manage in rejuvenating surgeries. The major challenge for midface lift is to achieve extensive dissection and elevate the composite tissues en bloc through minimal incisions. METHODS: In a total of 22 composite midface lift cases, a titanium cable wire was used. The wire was made into an elastic loop that guided three SMAS-suspending sutures out of the subcutaneous plane through a short incision at the temporal region. Then, each suture was fixated to the deep temporal fascia. Postoperative complications and the subjective assessment of the

The "Segmental SMAS Model": A Didactic Concept of Face and Neck Lift Anatomy.

Profound understanding of the surgical anatomy of the face and neck is the key to successful face lift surgery. The "Segmental SMAS Model" presented herein is the result of a decade-long effort in teaching fellows a logical and coherent anatomic model of face lift anatomy. The superficial musculo-aponeurotic system (SMAS) consists of segments with distinct surgical characteristics. These are determined by the presence of a deep gliding plane and/or adhesion through fibrous insertions. In this article, we define SMAS segments that are profoundly heterogeneous in their behavior and have surgical
