Elongation behavior of calcaneofibular and cervical ligaments in a closed kinetic chain: pathomechanics of lateral hindfoot instability.

Numerous reconstructive procedures are performed to correct both ankle and subtalar instability after trauma although the precise pathology which results in this chronic instability and pain is not yet known. This study examined the role of the calcaneofibular (CLFL) and cervical ligaments (CRVL) during physiologic loading and demonstrated the effect of CLFL deficiency on the CRVL. Talar and subtalar tilt as well as inversion range of motion before and after CLFL sectioning were studied. Eleven osteoligamentous fresh frozen cadaver legs were used in which each foot was taken through six positi…

Wobble board training after partial sprains of the lateral ligaments of the ankle: a prospective randomized study.

Ankle sprains are often complicated by functional instability and repeated sprains. Rehabilitation with wobble boards in patients with functional instability has been tested, and significant improvement has been found compared to no training. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the number of patients with residual symptoms following ankle sprains could be reduced by training on a wobble board during 12-week recovery period. In addition, the influence of training in the time course reduction of edema was investigated. We performed a prospective study including 61 patients, all acti

[A histochemical study of acid glycosaminoglycans on normal and pathological cartilage, ligaments and several other connective tissues].

Histochemical estimation of acid glycosaminoglycan was critically re-evaluated, using the meniscus, intervertebral disc, ossified yellow ligament, ganglion, Dupuytren's fascia and several other tissues. Each tissue was stained with toluidine blue, alcian blue, high iron diamine, low iron diamine, aldehyde fuchsin and dialyzed iron-ferrocyanide. Digestion techniques for GAG were used in these staining methods, and the effects of protease inhibitors (PI) on digestion were also examined. In this study, the optimal temperature for digestion with Streptomyces hyaluronidase was between 37 degrees C

Bio-Compositional and Microstructural Changes in Rabbit Knee Collateral Ligaments Eight Weeks After Anterior Cruciate Ligament Transection.

Injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is common in young, active individuals. It has the potential to lead to post-traumatic osteoarthritis. However, the effects of ACL injury on the bio-composition and microstructure of the knee's collateral ligaments have been poorly explored. In this study, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging and quantitative polarized light microscopy (qPLM) were used to identify the respective changes in bio-composition and collagen fiber arrangements of the knee's collateral ligaments. To mimic an ACL trauma, unilateral ACL transection surgery was performe…

Introducing Preservation Rhinoplasty Principles to Cleft Nasal Surgery: Unveiling the Role of Nasal Ligaments in Infant Anatomy.

Preservation rhinoplasty emphasizes maintaining ligament integrity for stable and natural surgical outcomes. However, its principles have no … of the lower lateral cartilages through controlled reconstruction of the intercrural and interdomal ligaments. The authors' findings suggest that preservation rhinoplasty principles, particularly ligament release and reconstruction, may offer functional and aesthetic improvements in cleft nasal surgery. This approach could represent a promising direction fo …

A Pilot Study on the Age-Dependent, Biomechanical Properties of Longitudinal Ligaments in the Human Cervical Spine.

The cervical spine ligaments, including the anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) and posterior longitudinal ligament (PLL), play a key role in maintaining spinal stability by limiting excessive movements. This study investigates how ageing affects the mechanical properties of these ligaments. We analysed 33 samples from 12 human cervical spines (15 ALL, 18 PLL), averaging data from the same donors for independent analysis, resulting in 18 final samples (8 ALL, 10 PLL). To explore age-related changes, we classified the samples into two groups-below and above 50 years old-aligning with the peak …

Case Report: Arthroscopic treatment of calcific periarthritis of the knee in the lateral and medial collateral ligaments.

OBJECTIVE: Calcific periarthritis, a well-recognized pathological condition of the shoulder joint, also represents an uncommon etiology of severe knee pain. Here, we present a case report of a patient with calcifications concurrently affecting both the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). CASE DESCRIPTION: The 62-year-old woman presented with severe lateral knee pain and restricted range of motion in her right knee. The knee exhibited marked tenderness in the posterolateral region and slight swelling, and maintained ligamentous stability. X-ray imaging of th

Facial retaining ligaments based on real color sectioned images with 3D models: Toward a more precise classification.

Facial retaining ligaments play a crucial role in maintaining and supporting skin with the superficial musculoaponeurotic system. However, visualizing these ligaments in detail has been challenging due to the limitations of cadaver dissection and radiologic images for plastic surgery. This study aims to visualize and refine the anatomical definitions of the facial retaining ligaments using high-resolution, true-color sectioned images and three-dimensional models. Facial retaining ligaments with their neighboring structures were identified in the sectioned images and reconstructed into 3D model…

Outcomes of uterosacral ligaments suspension for uterovaginal prolapse native-tissue repair: Over 1000-patient single-center study.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Surgical repair is the mainstay of genital prolapse management. Among native-tissue apical procedures, high uterosacral ligaments suspension is considered a valid and effective option for central compartment repair. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, complications rate, and functional results of high USL suspension as a primary prolapse repair technique in a large cohort of patients. METHODS: Patients who underwent vaginal hysterectomy followed by high uterosacral ligaments suspension for POP between January 2008 and December 2020 were retrospe…

Calcified Hofmann's ligaments as the cause of spinal cerebrospinal fluid leaks associated with spinal ventral dural tears.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with spinal CSF leaks often have ventral dural abnormalities (type 1 CSF leaks); however, the pathological mechanism for developing dural abnormalities is unknown. The authors investigated whether calcified dural ligaments contribute to the development of ventral dural tears, which cause spinal CSF leaks. METHODS: Consecutive patients diagnosed with type 1 CSF leaks who had spiculated spinal lesions between 2010 and 2024 were included. Clinical, radiological, surgical, and histological findings were reviewed. RESULTS: Nineteen patients with type 1 CSF fistulas had spicula…

The MICRO-Lift: A Ligaments-Based Anatomic Technique for Lower Face and Neck Rejuvenation Using Bipolar Radiofrequency.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this paper is to present the results of a new technique for lower face and neck rejuvenation named the MICRO-lift (Minimally Invasive, Combined Radiofrequency, Outpatient lift). This technique is based on a bipolar radiofrequency treatment applied to specific ligamentous areas. METHODS: Inclusion criteria were patients with skin laxity of the neck and jowls, with or without fat accumulation. Patients who presented platysma sag and alteration of subplatysmal structures were excluded from the study. The distribution of the energy was adapted to the ligament anatomy, diffe

Acromioclavicular joint instability on cross-body adduction view: the biomechanical effect of acromioclavicular and coracoclavicular ligaments sectioning.

BACKGROUND: The acromioclavicular (AC) and coracoclavicular (CC) ligaments are important stabilizers of the AC joint. We hypothesized that AC and trapezoid ligament injuries induce AC joint instability and that the clavicle can override the acromion on cross-body adduction view even in the absence of conoid ligament injury. Accordingly, we investigated how sectioning the AC and CC ligaments contribute to AC joint instability in the cross-body adduction position. METHODS: Six fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were used in this study, comprising five male and one female specimen, with a mean age…

Claw Toe With Dislocated Second Metatarsophalangeal Joint: Treated by Plantar Plate Tenodesis and Release of Collateral Ligaments.

Claw toe deformity of the second toe is a common forefoot deformity faced by foot and ankle surgeons. Frequently, it develops as the result of plantar plate insufficiency and subsequent metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint instability. As the disease deteriorates, the MTP joint can be dislocated. Reduction of the MTP joint without metatarsal osteotomy seems to be a logical approach unless there is excessively long second metatarsal. However, adequate periarticular soft-tissue release including the dorsal capsule, collateral ligaments and extensor tendon is needed to reduce the intra-articular press…
