STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine knowledge, attitudes and experiences of London casino workers regarding exposure to second hand smoke (SHS) in the workplace.
DESIGN: Postal survey of 1568 London casino workers in 25 casinos who were members of the TGWU or GMB Trade Unions.
MAIN RESULTS: Of the workers, 559 responded to the survey (36% response), 22% of whom were current smokers. Of the respondents, 71% report being nearly always exposed to heavy levels of SHS at work, and most (65%) want all working areas in their casino to be smoke-free. We have compared penetrating keratoplasty at a teaching hospital and a district general hospital (DGH). 126 children of 102 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) carrier mothers were delivered at Hammersmith Hospital and Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital, between 1971 and mid-1978. Blood tests on 110 of these children showed that 8 out of the 18 with Chinese mothers, but only 6 out of the 92 other children, have become HBsAg positive. The presence of maternal hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is also significantly correlated with transmission of HBsAg to the children. The management of children whose mothers are carriers is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Early pregnancy loss (EPL) can have profound implications for physical and psychological health. In the UK, significant variation in service provision exists for women affected by EPL. OBJECTIVES: This study seeks to identify signals of the male-female health-survival paradox in medieval London.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study uses skeletal data on age, sex, dental caries (n = 592) and antemortem tooth loss (n = 819) from adult individuals from medieval London cemeteries (c. 1200-1540 CE). The association between age and dental caries was assessed using binary logistic regression. The associations among age, time period (pre- vs. post-Black Death), oral biomarker (dental caries or antemortem tooth loss), and sex were tested using hierarchical log-linear analysis.
