Chyluria is the passage of chylus into urine resulting in fistulization through the lymphatic system and the urinary system. This rare condition is usually caused by filaria infestation or malformations, neoplasia or trauma. We report a case of a 18-year-old man. The patient presented milky urine which had appeared after angiography following minor leg trauma. Physical examination revealed asymmetry of the face and cutaneous dyschromia. Blood tests revealed hypogammaglobulinemia and altered CD4/CD8 ratio (0.6). Urine tests showed proteinuria (30 mg/dl), lipiduria (triglycerides 750 mg/dl) and

BACKGROUND: Rosacea has a number of pathophysiological components, chief of which are vascular abnormalities and inflammation. The morphology of the dilated vessels in rosacea may indicate an increase in the number and size of lymphatic vessels. We carried out a histological and an immunohistological study to quantify these abnormalities in rosacea and compared them with those seen in lupus erythematosus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed all cases of rosacea analysed over a 4-year period. Ultimately, we only included 86 cases in which the diagnosis could be confirmed by a dermatologist base

Plastic bronchitis is a rare respiratory disorder characterised by the formation and expectoration of firm, branching bronchial casts. These casts resemble plastic in their appearance and consistency, hence the name. The condition is often associated with underlying conditions, such as congenital heart disease, lymphatic abnormalities or pulmonary diseases. In some cases, patients may also present with 'chyloptysis', the expectoration of chyle-containing sputum. This article describes the case of one of our patients with refractory plastic bronchitis who was eventually cured with thoracic duct…

INTRODUCTION: Kaposiform lymphangiomatosis (KLA) is a rare and aggressive lymphatic anomaly characterised by chylous effusions, respiratory … duced chyle output. Magnetic resonance lymphangiography demonstrated diffuse abdominal and thoracic lymphatic abnormalities. She was subsequently treated with sirolimus, which was associated with reduced pleural and pericardial chylous drainage but ongoing clinical deterioration. Cell-free DNA analysis of pleural fluid identified a somatic NRAS variant (NM_002524.5 (NRAS …

PURPOSE: The brain lymphatic vessels (LV) drain fluids, metabolic waste, and immune cells. The abnormal accumulation of toxic substances causes neurodegenerative, cerebrovascular diseases, and brain tumors. Despite their intracranial importance, the precise extracranial exit routes of brain LVs remain poorly characterized. We evaluated the presence of LVs in the dural samples overlying the foramina/canals (superior orbital fissure, foramen rotundum, foramen ovale, Meckel's cave, internal acoustic meatus, foramen lacerum, jugular foramen, and hypoglossal canal) using immunohistochemistry.

Background: Vulvar lymphangiectasia (VLA) is a rare condition characterized by the abnormal dilation of lymphatic vessels in the vulvar region, often secondary to surgery or radiation therapy for malignancies. Its clinical presentation closely resembles other dermatological conditions, posing challenges for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. This study aims to present a rare case of VLA occurring decades after cervical carcinoma surgery, contributing to the limited literature on this condition and offering insights into its differential diagnosis and management. Methods: A 70-year-

In hydronephrosis the contents of the renal pelvis are constantly being changed. The exact mode of the interchange is still obscure. With the hope of obtaining some evidence of this absorption, a series of experiments has been carried out, introducing dyes at various periods in total hydronephrosis. The findings of previous experimental work on the subject are conflicting. Two views are held; one, that absorption occurs solely through the tubular system, and the other, that there is a direct outflow from the renal pelvis into the venous system. In the present work only such an amount of dye was

With the acceleration of global aging, the relationship between Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the glymphatic system (GS) has become a research hotspot in the field of neuroscience in recent years. Traditionally, the central nervous system was thought to lack a lymphatic system; however, research over the past decade has overturned this view. Studies have revealed the existence of GS and meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) in the brain, which clear metabolic waste (such as amyloid-β and tau proteins) through the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid (ISF). Dysfunction of th

The glymphatic system is a glial-dependent waste clearance pathway in the central nervous system, devoted to drain away waste metabolic products and soluble proteins such as amyloid-beta. An impaired brain glymphatic system can increase the incidence of neurovascular, neuroinflammatory, and neurodegenerative diseases. Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy can serve as a non-invasive neuroprotective strategy for maintaining and optimizing effective brain waste clearance. In this review, we discuss the crucial role of the glymphatic drainage system in removing toxins and waste metabolites from the br

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis leading to the passage of white urine or chyle is a rare manifestation in children. Filarial parasite infiltration leading to abnormal lymphatic-urinary communication occurs with prolonged infection. The incubation period ranges from 5 to 20 yrs., thus relatively infrequent in the pediatric age group. Index of suspicion should be high when a child presents with the passage of white urine because the subclinical manifestation of filarial infection is difficult to recognize. Moreover, more pathognomonic clinical manifestations such as lymphoedema or hydrocoele ar

Protein-losing enteropathy (PLE) is a chronic condition involving multiple organ systems that may develop any time following Fontan completion. The pathogenesis of PLE is complex and multifactorial. Chronic venous hypertension, low cardiac output, and abnormal lymphatics may all play a role in the pathogenesis of PLE. Common signs and symptoms include chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, and ascites. Diagnosis is based on the presence of signs and symptoms in addition to hypoalbuminemia and elevated stool alpha 1 antitrypsin. Early identification and a comprehensive approach to evaluation and tre

Elephantiasis nostras verrucosa (ENV) is a rare clinical condition associated with chronic non-filarial lymphedema caused by bacterial or non-infectious lymphatic obstruction. A variety of etiologies, including infection, tumor obstruction, trauma, radiation, chronic venous stasis, congestive heart failure, and obesity, can lead to chronic lymphatic obstruction and edema. Mossy papules, plaques, and cobblestone-like nodules are clinically impressive features of ENV, but biopsy reveals only moderately abnormal findings such as pseudoepitheliomatous hyperplasia, dilated lymphatic spaces, fibrous

Lymphoedema is a clinical condition caused by impairment of the lymphatic system, leading to swelling of subcutaneous soft tissues. As a result, accumulation of protein-rich interstitial fluid and lymphostasis often causes additional swelling, fibrosis and adipose tissue hypertrophy leading to progressive morbidity and loss of quality of life for the patient. Lymphoedema can be distinguished as primary or secondary. Lymphoedema is a complication frequently encountered in patients treated for cancer, especially after lymphadenoectomy and/or radiotherapy based on destruction of lymphatics. Howev

The proper delivery of immune cells throughout the host's various tissues and organs is essential to health, and abnormalities in the type and quantity of leukocyte distribution is usually associated with disease. Because of its size and presence of a very large amount of immunocytes in the mucosa and mesenteric lymph nodes, the gut is the recipient of a constant influx of leukocytes, a process tightly regulated by multiple factors. These include cell adhesion molecules on the leukocytes and their counter-receptors on the microvascular endothelial cells in the bowel wall, a number of chemokine

Acute lymphatic leukemia presenting with bone pain and spine involvement is a recognized clinicopathologic complex that can mimic a wide range of orthopaedic conditions. Bone pain as the presenting complaint is common, with a reported incidence of 27% to 50%. Radiologic abnormalities associated with leukemia in children has been described previously. In the literature, the incidence of spinal involvement is controversial, but there is agreement that the spine is less commonly involved than are the long bones. At the onset of the disease, only 10% of children have normal peripheral blood counts

Karyotype analysis using the Tri-staining-technique (Chromomycin A3/Distamycin A/DAPI) and subsequent DAPI/AMD staining (Schweizer, 1981) was performed on the bone marrow and peripheral blood of three patients with "Burkitt-like" acute lymphatic leukaemia (FAB: L3). In two patients we found the specific translocation t(8;22). One patient displayed in addition a structural abnormality of chromosome 9, visualized with C-banding using the DA/DAPI stain, and in two patients we found specific abnormalities of chromosome 1. Several patterns of the abnormal chromosome 1 revealed an intercalated DA/DA

INTRODUCTION: Lymphatic malformations (LMs) are not uncommon findings in neonates, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 2000 live births. Most LMs involving the airway are grossly symptomatic and are diagnosed either prenatally or immediately after birth. In cases of airway LMs that are not diagnosed perinatally, the child often experiences significant symptoms beginning at birth. This case report describes a child presenting with stridor and snoring at the age of 17 months, a timeframe and clinical picture making LM a less likely diagnosis.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 17-month-old female presented to
