Small increases in dietary calcium above normal requirements exacerbate magnesium deficiency in rats fed a low magnesium diet.

In North America, the calcium (Ca):magnesium (Mg) intake ratio has increased over the last several decades raising concerns about possible adverse effects of Ca intakes on Mg status. The primary objective of this study was to investigate whether small decreases or increases in dietary Ca from normal requirements worsen Mg status in rats fed a low Mg diet. Weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 1 of 8 diets for 6 weeks. The 7 test diets were supplemented with low Mg (0.18 g/kg diet) and either 1 (1Ca), 3 (3Ca), 5 (5Ca), 7.5 (7.5Ca), 10 (10Ca), 15 (15Ca) or 20 (20Ca) g Ca/kg diet. The contro

Physiological characterisation of magnesium deficiency in sugar beet: acclimation to low magnesium differentially affects photosystems I and II.

Magnesium deficiency in plants is a widespread problem, affecting productivity and quality in agriculture, yet at a physiological level it has been poorly studied in crop plants. Here, a physiological characterization of Mg deficiency in Beta vulgaris L., an important crop model, is presented. The impact of Mg deficiency on plant growth, mineral profile and photosynthetic activity was studied. The aerial biomass of plants decreased after 24 days of hydroponic culture in Mg-free nutrient solution, whereas the root biomass was unaffected. Analysis of mineral profiles revealed that Mg decreased m…

Identification of the magnesium transport (MGT) family in Poncirus trifoliata and functional characterization of PtrMGT5 in magnesium deficiency stress.

At least eight MGT genes were identified in citrus and PtrMGT5 plays important role in maintaining Mg homeostasis in citrus by getting involved in the Mg absorption and transport. Magnesium (Mg) is an essential macronutrient for plant growth and development, and the magnesium transporter (MGT) genes participate in mediate Mg2+ uptake, translocation and sequestration into cellular storage compartments. Although several MGT genes have been characterized in various plant species, a comprehensive analysis of the MGT gene family in citrus is still uncharacterized. In this study, eight PtrMGT genes

[Effect of some organic and inorganic magnesium salts on lipoprotein state in rats fed with magnesium-deficient diet].

Low serum magnesium (Mg) concentrations have been reported in patients with atherosclerosis. From the other hand numerous clinical reports suggest the beneficial effects of Mg adjuvant therapy for the treatment of atherosclerosis. The purpose of this present study was to compare the effect of Mg L-aspartate and Mg chloride alone and in combinations with pyridoxine, Mg sulfate and Magne B6 (Mg lactate with pyridoxine) on lipid profile in rats fed with Mg deficient diet. To induce hypomagnesemia, fifty-three rats were placed on a Mg-deficient diet (ICN Biomedicals Inc. Aurora, OH) and deminerali

Deficiency in serum ionized magnesium but not total magnesium in patients with migraines. Possible role of ICa2+/IMg2+ ratio.

It has been suggested that magnesium (Mg) may play a role in the pathogenesis of headaches. Serum and intracellular measurements of Mg in headache patients have produced inconsistent results. The recent development of an ion-selective electrode for Mg2+ allowed precise measurement of serum ionized magnesium (IMg2+) in patients with various headache syndromes. Low serum IMg2+ and a high ICa2+/IMg2+ ratio were found in 42% of patients having an attack of migraine, but only in 23% of patients with a severe continuous headache. Total serum Mg was normal in both groups of patients. However, in pati

Effect of fluoride on the mobilization of skeletal magnesium and soft-tissue calcinosis during acute magnesium deficiency in the rat.

To investigate the effect of fluoride on the mobilization of skeletal magnesium and on kidney calcification during magnesium depletion, male Holtzman rats were fed a magnesium-sufficient diet (400 ppm of magnesium) and drinking water containing either 0, 50 or 100 ppm of fluoride for a 20-day period prior to the initiation of magnesium deficiency. The high fluoride regimen resulted in a 100-fold increase in the fluoride content of the skeleton. On day 20 magnesium depletion was initiated by feeding the animals a diet containing 12 ppm of magnesium. Over a 4-week period of magnesium deprivation…

Reversible model of magnesium depletion induced by systemic kainic acid injection in magnesium-deficient rats: I--Comparative study of various magnesium salts.

We developed three models of reversible magnesium depletion in rats resulting from the combined effects of kainic (KA) acid with magnesium deficiency, in order to compare the effects of various common magnesium salts (pidolate, aspartate, lactate, gluconate and chloride) and of magnesium acetyl taurinate (MgATa), administered daily (14 mg Mg2+, PO) for ten days. First, the immediate effects (wet dog shakes, clonic convulsions and death 1 h after injection) and late effects (fall from hole board between the second and tenth days post injection) of kainic acid at three different doses (3.6 and 1…

Effects of potassium or potassium/magnesium supplementation on potassium content of body tissues and fluids in furosemide-treated rats on magnesium-deficient or magnesium-sufficient diet.

Persistent Mg2+ deficiency may interfere with restoration of normal tissue K+ levels. This study examined: a) the effects of chronic furosemide treatment on K+ of sartorius, aorta and ventricle of rats fed Mg2(+)-deficient (100 ppm) or Mg2(+)-sufficient (400 ppm) diet and deionized water; b) whether normal tissue K+ is restored by oral K+ or K+/Mg2+ supplementation with continued furosemide therapy. Levels of Mg2+ were also measured. Furosemide (20 mg/kg i.p.) decreased K+ in sartorius, aorta and ventricle by 5.5, 4.3 and 19.9 microEq/gm (p less than .05), respectively, in rats fed 100 ppm Mg2

Current Understandings on Magnesium Deficiency and Future Outlooks for Sustainable Agriculture.

The productivity of agricultural produce is fairly dependent on the availability of nutrients and efficient use. Magnesium (Mg2+) is an essential macronutrient of living cells and is the second most prevalent free divalent cation in plants. Mg2+ plays a role in several physiological processes that support plant growth and development. However, it has been largely forgotten in fertilization management strategies to increase crop production, which leads to severe reductions in plant growth and yield. In this review, we discuss how the Mg2+ shortage induces several responses in plants at differen

Effect of magnesium deficiency on various mineral concentrations in rat liver.

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is well known to affect metabolism of some trace minerals. We investigated the effect of Mg deficiency on hepatic concentration of various minerals in rats. Twelve 5-week-old male rats were divided into the groups given a control diet and an Mg-deficient diet. After 4 weeks, liver sample was collected from each rat. The concentrations of 36 minerals were simultaneously determined by a semiquantitative method of inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The semiquantitative analysis showed that Mg deficiency significantly increased iron (Fe), copper (Cu),

Magnesium deficiency inhibits primary tumor growth but favors metastasis in mice.

The results of several experimental and epidemiological studies have shown an inverse correlation between Mg status and the risk of some cancers. However, relationship between magnesium and cancer is complex. The aim of our work was to examine the precise effect of Mg deficiency on transplantable mouse tumor growth and metastasis. The results obtained indicate a significant retardation of primary tumor growth (up to 70%) in mice receiving Mg-deficient diet. However, Mg repletion caused in these mice significant increase of primary tumor burden. Analysis of cell cycle distribution showed a redu

Hypocalcaemia and chronic alcohol intoxication: transient hypoparathyroidism secondary to magnesium deficiency.

The authors report the observation of an alcoholic patient admitted for tetanic manifestations, in whom severe hypocalcaemia associated with hyperphosphatemia were suggestive of hypoparathyroidism. Administration of magnesium supplementation alone improved the clinical features and led to the correction of the calcium abnormalities. The mechanisms of hypomagnesemia in alcohol intoxication are reviewed as well as the links with hypocalcaemia.
