Aneurysmal bone cyst of the atlas: successful treatment through selective arterial embolization: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign and expansile osteolytic lesions that can occur in any location in the spine, including the craniovertebral junction. Aggressive resection followed by bone grafting has been the mainstay of treatment, with selective arterial embolization as a presurgical adjunct. Complete excision of these lesions at the craniovertebral junction is associated with high surgical morbidity. We report a case of successful treatment of an ABC of the atlas in a child with selective arterial embolization alone. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old gi

Targeted transarterial embolization of the femoral head: development of a minimally invasive approach to model Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease in piglets.

Clinical management of children with Legg-Calvé-Perthes Disease (LCPD) is hampered by incomplete understanding of how the extent of ischemic injury and the duration and quality of subsequent repair determine patient outcome. The traditional piglet model of LCPD is limited to capturing global femoral head ischemia; thus, a new model is needed in which the extent of ischemia can be varied to replicate the spectrum of disease seen in children. In this exploratory study, we used an iterative approach to test and refine methods to bilaterally occlude vessels supplying the femoral heads in n = 8 you

Endovascular Selective Intra-Arterial Infusion of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Loaded With Delta-24 in a Canine Model.

BACKGROUND: Delta-24-RGD, an oncolytic adenovirus, shows promise against glioblastoma. To enhance virus delivery, we recently demonstrated that human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells loaded with Delta-24-RGD (hMSC-D24) can eradicate glioblastomas in mouse models. There are no studies examining the safety of endovascular selective intra-arterial (ESIA) infusions of MSC-D24 in large animals simulating human clinical situations. OBJECTIVE: To perform canine preclinical studies testing the feasibility and safety of delivering increasing doses of hMSCs-D24 via ESIA infusions. METHODS: E

Surrogate gating strategies for the Elekta Unity MR-Linac gating system.

PURPOSE: MRI-guided adaptive radiotherapy can directly monitor the anatomical positioning of the intended target during treatment with no additional imaging dose. Elekta has recently released its comprehensive motion management (CMM) solution that enables automatic radiation beam-gating on the Unity MR-Linac. Easily visualized targets that are distinct from the surrounding anatomy can be used to drive automatic gating decisions from the MRI cine imaging. However, poorly visualized targets can compromise the tracking and gating capabilities and may require surrogate tracking structures. This wo

MRI-based quantification of carbon and oxygen concentrations in human soft tissues for range verification in proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: In-situ range verification of particle therapy based on the detection of secondary emitted radiation requires highly accurate assignment of elemental concentrations (particularly carbon and oxygen) in the human body. PURPOSE: A method for quantitatively predicting carbon and oxygen concentrations in human soft tissues is proposed. This method relies on an empirical one-to-one correspondence between the mass fraction and water content (WC), which is a measurable tissue quantity based on magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (referred to as "MRWC-based method"). METHODS: A numerical anal

Imaging monocytes with iron oxide nanoparticles targeted towards the monocyte integrin MAC-1 (CD11b/CD18) does not result in improved atherosclerotic plaque detection by in vivo MRI.

Imaging of macrophages with superparamagnetic iron oxide particles (SPIO) has been performed to improve detection of atherosclerotic plaque inflammation in human and mouse studies by molecular magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Since affinity of the monocyte/macrophage integrin MAC-1 (CD11b/CD18) is upregulated in inflammation, we generated a contrast agent targeting CD11b (CD11b-SPIOs) for improved macrophage detection in plaques. CD11b-SPIOs and non-targeted SPIOs (control-SPIOs) were incubated in vitro with human monocytes/macrophages. As quantified by SPIO-induced MRI signal extinction, int

Patient-Reported Quality-of-Life Outcomes After Abdominopelvic Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Using an MR-Linac System.

PURPOSE: Despite the increasing use of MR-Linac (MRL) in the management of patients with oligometastatic or upper gastrointestinal malignancies, health-related quality-of-life (HRQoL) outcomes are lacking. Currently, it is not well established whether treatments using MRL offer HRQoL advantages over CT-based treatments. In this study, we present prospectively collected HRQoL data after abdominopelvic stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) on a 1.5T MRL system. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a single-center, prospective observational study of patients receiving MR guided adaptive radi

Fabrication of Tunable 3D Cellular Structures in High Volume Using Magnetic Levitation Guided Assembly.

Tunable and reproducible size with high circularity is an important limitation to obtain three-dimensional (3D) cellular structures and spheroids in scaffold free tissue engineering approaches. Here, we present a facile methodology based on magnetic levitation (MagLev) to fabricate 3D cellular structures rapidly and easily in high-volume and low magnetic field. In this study, 3D cellular structures were fabricated using magnetic levitation directed assembly where cells are suspended and self-assembled by contactless magnetic manipulation in the presence of a paramagnetic agent. Multimodal Imaging Nanoassembled Agarose Microspheres for Drug Delivery in Transarterial Chemoembolization.

Embolization microspheres are widely used in transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) surgery, which improves treatment efficacy and patient survival by embolizing tumor blood vessels and locally releasing chemotherapy drugs. At present, embolized microspheres face challenges such as invisibility, valuableness, and drug loading limitations, which may affect treatment efficacy and postoperative examination. In this study, we designed multifunctional and low-cost nanoassembled agarose microspheres (NAAMs) and evaluated their drug loading and release capabilities, multimodal imaging capabilities, a

[A case of amyloid myopathy diagnosed during the treatment of myopathy associated with anti-signal recognition particle antibodies].

A 78-year-old man presented with subacute progressive proximal weakness and dysphagia. A biopsy specimen from the left biceps femoris revealed evidence of necrotic and regenerating muscle fibers, but lymphocyte infiltration was not noted. The patient was diagnosed with necrotizing myopathy with anti-signal recognition particle (SRP) antibodies. Concomitant therapy with prednisolone and azathioprine caused the serum CK level to return to normal and it caused clinical manifestations to abate. One year later, however, muscle weakness worsened. Immunoelectrophoresis of serum revealed IgG M protein

USPIO-enhanced MR imaging of glycerol-induced acute renal failure in the rabbit.

Enhanced-MR imaging in combination with ultrasmall superparamagnetic iron oxide (USPIO) was used in the glycerol-induced model of acute renal failure (ARF) in the rabbit to detect renal perfusion abnormalities. A control group (n = 5) and an ARF group (n = 5) were studied after intramuscular injection of glycerol (10 ml/kg) with T2-weighted spin-echo sequence at 1.5 T and a 27 mumol/kg IV dose of iron. The signal intensity (SI) was quantified in the cortex, the outer medulla (OM), and the inner medulla (IM). In control rabbits, the maximum SI decrease after USPIO injection was in the OM (76% +

Magnetic-Photoacoustic Dual-Mode Probe for the Visualization of H2S in Colorectal Cancer.

Techniques for the qualitative and quantitative detection of H2S in vivo have attracted considerable attention due to the key role of H2S in various physiological and pathological processes. However, in vivo detection strategies for H2S are mainly based on fluorescence imaging, which is limited by its poor tissue penetration. Moreover, the limitations of single-mode probes are amplified in complex physiological environments. Herein, a core-shell Fe3O4@Cu2O nanoparticle was constructed as a magnetic-photoacoustic dual-mode probe for H2S detection in vitro and in vivo based on the in situ respon

MRI detection of nonproliferative tumor cells in lymph node metastases using iron oxide particles in a mouse model of breast cancer.

Cell tracking with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and iron nanoparticles is commonly used to monitor the fate of implanted cells in preclinical disease models. Few studies have employed these methods to study cancer cells because proliferative iron-labeled cancer cells will lose the label as they divide. In this study, we evaluate the potential for retention of the iron nanoparticle label, and resulting MRI signal, to serve as a marker for slowly dividing cancer cells. Green fluorescent protein-transfected MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells were labeled with red fluorescent micron-sized superpar
