Miniplates have been used during the last decade to facilitate stability between bony fragments in the maxillofacial region and are currently the preferred surgical method for the fixation of fractures and osteotomies. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the biomechanical behaviors of six different types of miniplates used to reconstruct mandibular body fractures: Group 1 (straight, 2 holes, 12.0 mm spacing), Group 2 (straight, 4 holes, 9.0 spacing), Group 3 (straight, 6 holes, 9.0 mm spacing), Group 4 (L-shaped, 4 holes, 9.0 mm spacing, right hand plate), Group 5 (Y-shaped, 5 ho

We describe a C-arm technique for mandibular condylar fractures in an anatomic study using a model skull and show its feasibility in a clinical case. The C-arm allowed posterior-anterior visualization of the condylar process. The X-ray axis was canted ∼15 degrees cranially to the Frankfort horizontal line. The skull's sagittal plane was rotated ∼15 degrees ipsilaterally to the X-ray axis. This technique facilitates clear visualization of the condylar neck with easy, flexible, and timely adjustments. In selected cases, this method would convert the clinical settings of the condylar fracture pat

Endoscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) of subcondylar fractures is minimally invasive, provides excellent visibility without a large incision, and reduces surgical scarring and the risk of facial nerve injury. This study evaluated the complications associated with EAORIF. Twenty-six patients underwent EAORIF for mandibular condyle fractures. The postoperative follow-up period was longer than 6 months. We analyzed associations between the complication incidence and the number of fixation plates, accompanying mandibular fractures, and age. Eighteen (69.2%) and 6 (23.1%…

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial trauma is very frequent and associated with a high incidence of mandibular fractures. Although there is universal agreement as to the treatment goals and basic therapeutic principles of reduction and stabilization, a variety of currently accepted treatment modalities indicate a lack of consensus. The authors evaluate the incidence, etiology, management and complications of 344 mandibular fractures in 228 patients treated in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), Islamabad, Pakistan, during a three year pe…

At the University Hospital of Malmö, Sweden, standardized trauma charts were used for registration of all jaw fractures from 1972 to 1976. During the year 2005 the aim was to interview all patients treated non-surgically for unilateral mandibular condylar fractures during this period. In total, 49 patients with unilateral condylar fractures were treated non-surgically in 1972-1976. Of these, 23 patients were available for follow-up, 17 were dead, 7 were not found and 2 did not answer letters or phone calls. The follow-up was a telephone interview according to a standardized questionnaire conce

BACKGROUND: To determine the prognosis of fractures of the mandibular condyle after closed treatment.
METHODS: Patients (n = 144) with a fracture of the mandibular condyle, all treated closed, were included in the study. Fracture types and position of the fracture parts were determined on radiographs. Follow-up was after 12 months in which the average pain, experienced during the last week (visual analog scale, 100 mm), and mandibular functioning were assessed (mandibular function impairment questionnaire (MFIQ)).
RESULTS: Data of 116 (81%) patients, 41 women (35%) and 75 men (65%), were ava

This study was designed to record the results of conservative treatment of condylar fractures and to find out if there were any variables that were predictive of complications. Data were analysed in our computer department. During the period 1984-1996, all patients who presented with a fracture of the mandibular condyle and who attended for control examination one year after treatment were recorded at the end of treatment and one year later. The ability to open the mouth, deviation and occlusion were recorded. After one year 45 of the 348 patients (13%) had minor physical complaints such as re

OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic efficacy of Tuned Aperture Computed Tomography (TACT) with conventional imaging modalities for detection of fractures of the mandible.
METHODS: Fractures were induced using blunt trauma in human defleshed mandibles. Conventional extra-oral and indirect digital images, unprocessed TACT images reconstructed from eight and 16 basis images (BI) and iteratively restored TACT images from eight and 16 BI were used for fracture evaluation. Twelve observers recorded their diagnoses using a five-point confidence rating scale. The data were analysed using ROC curve

PURPOSE: This study tested the clinical application of shape-memory clamps for fixation of mandibular fractures using transoral access.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clamps made of Ti50Ni48.7Co1.3 alloy were used to fix mandible fractures. These clamps automatically recovered their programmed shape at body temperature. The clamps were used to treat all types of fractures occurring between the mandibular angles. Postoperative maxillomandibular fixation was not required. Clamps were removed after a period of at least 6 weeks, and tissue samples were taken for microscopic examination.
RESULTS: Seventy…

Of 214 patients with mandibular fractures treated following the AO/ASIF principle of rigid fixation, 13 patients (6.1%) developed postoperative infection. The yearly percentage decreased remarkably during the study period. When rigid fixation became a routine method, the infection rate was as low as the corresponding figure for cases treated with nonstable techniques and maxillomandibular fixation (MMF). All but one of the infected fractures were in the angular region of the mandible. Teeth had been extracted from the fracture line in 9 of the 10 dentulous patients. It was concluded that erron…

Partial mandibulectomy was performed in 8 dogs with open or infected mandibular fractures (3 second degree and 5 third degree) because of economic restriction, osteomyelitis, or severe bone and soft tissue injury. Six dogs ate voluntarily by the second day after surgery, and 2 dogs required pharyngostomy tube feeding for 2 to 6 days. Complications included oral wound dehiscence (3 dogs), shifting of the mandible toward the operated side (6 dogs), and drooping of the tongue (2 dogs). Slight malocclusion was of no consequence, and all dogs were eating normally at follow-up evaluations (10 days t…

This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between the precise three-dimensional location of the third molar (M3) and mandibular angle fracture (MAF) patterns and to assess the effect of the volume ratio occupied by M3 in the mandibular angle on fracture patterns. The location of M3 was assessed in 218 patients with MAF using computed tomography reconstruction. The bone volume of the mandibular angle and the bone volume occupied by M3 were measured to calculate the volume ratio of M3 to the mandibular angle (M3/MA). MAF patterns were categorized into simple fracture (Type I), displaced frac

Tooth replacement often leads to inadequate vertical volume in the recipient site bone when a tooth has been extracted because of a vertical root fracture (VRF). This case report presents the autotransplantation of a mandibular third molar (tooth #32) with the attached buccal cortical plate to replace a mandibular second molar (tooth #31) diagnosed with a VRF. After extraction of tooth #31, the recipient socket was prepared based on the size measured in advance with cone-beam computed tomographic imaging. The precise and calculated osteotomy of the cortical bone of tooth #32 allowed for the ex
