This study describes an unusual case of mandibular asymmetry after fibula free flap reconstruction in a young man following major facial trauma that was corrected using a custom-made polyetheretherketone prosthesis. There is little information in the literature on the use of alloplasts to correct mandibular asymmetry as interest in 'aesthetic re-modelling' has traditionally focused on nasal, zygomatic and chin regions. This report demonstrates that this technique can be used successfully to address selected cases of mandibular asymmetry.

Osteochondroma of the temporomandibular joint is a rare condition that most frequently affects the mandibular condyle. Fixed osteochondroma originating from the glenoid fossa is extremely rare and a literature search identified only two reported cases. The cases of two additional patients in whom osteochondroma developed in the posterior part of the glenoid fossa leading to the sudden onset of chin deviation and malocclusion are reported herein. We conclude that osteochondroma of the glenoid fossa is a slow growing benign tumour with typical clinical and radiological features. It requires surg

In the current case, a 31-year-old patient who presented with a painful unilateral malocclusion and an unclear mass in the region of the right temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ) is reported. The malocclusion had been noticed by the patient a few months earlier. Chewing on the right side had become severely impaired and painful. The patient had no history of trauma to the TMJ. Plain radiographs and computed-tomographic scans depicted an enlarged and deformed mandibular condyle. A condylectomy was performed. The histological investigation of the specimen revealed an osteochondroma. The tumour did no

BACKGROUND: A sixteen year-old African male with a large, hard swelling at the left gonial angle, presented at a private dental clinic in January 2009. The swelling felt warm, pulsating and was intermittently symptomatic. The unilocular, expansile lesion seen on a panoramic radiograph was provisionally diagnosed as an aneurysmal bone cyst on the basis of age, symptoms and clinical features. However, ameloblastoma was included in the differential diagnosis.
METHODS: The histological examination of an incisional biopsy specimen revealed multiple blood-filled spaces separated by septa of fibrous

This study is a retrospective review of the records of all cases treated in the authors' department since 1991 to identify patients with condylar masses diagnosed as osteochondromas. In 2186 cases of benign and malignant cysts/tumours of the maxillofacial region (1560 malignant and 626 benign), 8 osteochondromas of the mandibular condyle were identified. These 8 cases and the current English literature are reviewed.

A 10 year-old male was referred to our department for a delay in the eruption of his lower canine, premolars and molars on the right side. The panoramic radiograph showed a multilocular radiolucent lesion approximately 3.5 x 7.5 cm in diameter including the right canine, first and second premolar and second mandibular molar. The lesion was clinically diagnosed as dentigerous cyst. It was enucleated via curettage of the bone bed and diagnosed as ameloblastic fibroma at the histopathological examination. After twenty-one months, radiographs showed that the surgical defect had filled with new bon

CASE: We report the case of a 24-year-old woman presenting with a rapidly growing mass in the right masseteric region. MRI suggested a diagnosis of a rhabdomyosarcoma but CT-scan evoked a benign lesion such as chondroblastoma or aneurismal bone cyst. The biopsy specimen proved the diagnosis of aneurismal bone cyst and the patient was treated by surgical curettage. There was no recurrence after 4 years of follow-up.
DISCUSSION: The aneurismal bone cyst of the jaw is a rare pseudocystic lesion, characterized by replacement of the normal bone with fibro-osseous tissue containing blood-filled sin

This case report describes an unusual odontogenic carcinoma, which was detected during routine periodontal examination. The lesion occurred in a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted third molar in an otherwise asymptomatic 66-year-old male patient. The impacted tooth and lesion were excised based on evidence of radiographic change and clinical findings. An unusual histopathologic presentation is reported. The treatment provided for this tumor and the management of impacted teeth is reviewed.

The botryoid odontogenic cyst (BOC) is considered a rare multilocular variant of the lateral periodontal cyst. The origin of the BOC can be seen in aberrant odontogenic tissue. The BOC is found especially in the premolar region of the mandible, as well as in the frontal region of the maxilla of patients aged between 60 and 70 years. Most of the 11 published articles of BOC have shown high rates of recurrence. Histopathologically the BOC is marked by multilocular cysts lined by a thin, nonkeratinized epithelium. Clusters of glycogen-rich epithelial cells may be noted in nodular thickenings of t

Facial deformities due to loss of mandibular segments in children lead to severe functional and psychological disturbances. Such deformities should be corrected taking into account both contour and function. In addition, they should be planned for long-term growth and performed in the fewest possible surgical stages. This article presents the experience in seven cases of mandibular reconstruction in children after surgical ablation for benign conditions. We performed a scapular flap in one case and fibular flaps in six. The mean age of the patients was 9.1 years. Follow-up ranged from 1.5 to 5

BACKGROUND: Operative treatment of advanced mandibular tumors may require excision of a portion of the mandible including the condyle. It is not clear how condylar excision affects postoperative quality of life (QoL).
PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure the association between operative management of the condyle and postoperative health-related QoL and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) function.
STUDY DESIGN, SETTING, AND SAMPLE: This prospective cohort study included patients with benign mandibular lesions who underwent hemi-mandibulectomy and were treated at Taleghani and Imam Hossein Ho

Our report details an unusual case of chondrosarcoma in a man in his late 50s who presented with symptoms of pain, swelling and trismus. He was initially diagnosed with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and managed conservatively. With time, symptoms progressed, so a cone beam CT scan was advised. The scan revealed an expansile lytic lesion in the condylar region with cortical erosion. It showed heterogeneous density with ring arch calcification around the condylar head, which was suggestive of the cartilaginous lesion. Microscopic examination showed a tumour composed of lobules of atypic

BACKGROUND: A central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign, proliferative, intraosseous, and non-odontogenic lesion occurring primarily in children and young adults. On the histological level, it is characterized by numerous multinucleated giant cells scattered randomly throughout a sea of spindle-shaped mesenchymal stromal cells which are dispersed throughout the fibrovascular connective tissue stroma containing areas of haemorrhage. When it comes to radiographic features, CGCG can have an array of variations, ranging from well-defined expansile lesions to ill-defined and destructive lesio

This retrospective case series describes a combined ventral extraoral and intraoral approach for mandibulectomy in cats and highlights the importance of prompt management of the postoperative iatrogenic malocclusion through dental extraction, crown height reduction with vital pulp therapy or root canal therapy of the contralateral mandibular canine tooth. Nine cats were reviewed for signalment, history and physical examination, diagnostic workup, tumor type, mandibulectomy extension, lymph node removal as well as both intraoperative and postoperative complications. The performed surgical proce

Primary intraosseous carcinoma not otherwise specified (PIOC NOS) is a rare tumor assumed to arise from the epithelium, such as odontogenic cysts or benign tumors. Its clinical and imaging diagnoses are often challenging, especially in the early stages, as it mimics jaw cysts and benign tumors, and no specific findings have been identified. This report presents the case of a 66-year-old male patient with mandibular PIOC, highlighting the imaging findings over time. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) before symptom onset showed a cystic lesion in the right mandible with a soft tissue component. B

BACKGROUND: Mechanical and morphological factors have both been described to influence the rate of pseudarthrosis in mandibular reconstruction. By minimizing mechanical confounders, the present study aims to evaluate the impact of bone origin at the intersegmental gap on osseous union.
METHODS: Patients were screened retrospectively for undergoing multi-segment fibula free flap reconstruction of the mandible including the anterior part of the mandible and osteosynthesis using patient-specific 3D-printed titanium reconstruction plates. Percentage changes in bone volume and width at the bone in

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of hard tissue continuity defects caused by ablative tumor surgery has been traditionally reconstructed with autogenous bone grafts or microvascular free flaps. Although results have been predictable from these 2 methods of reconstruction, the morbidity associated with bone harvest is quite serious for the patient. Predictable results have been obtained with using a combination of 100% cadaver bone, bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), and recombinant human bone morphogenic protein in immediate reconstruction for benign tumor extirpations through the extraoral appro

Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign tumors of bone. Although osteochondroma is rarely seen in facial region, the cases in literature are usually in the mandibular region, especially around the condyle. The treatments of these lesions include total condylectomy or local resection of the lesion. The aim of the present study is to emphasize the importance of stereolithographic models in planning tumor surgery and how it affects the treatment planning, operation time and prognosis. In this report, the patient had an osteochondroma in the left condylar region, pushing the condyle seriou
