Influence of radiation therapy on lung tissue in breast cancer patients. CT-assessed density changes 4 years after completion of radiotherapy.

CT-assessed density changes in lung tissues were measured in 22 disease-free breast cancer patients 4 years after completion of radiation therapy. All patients had previously undergone similar CT-examinations before treatment, 3 months, and 9 months after radiotherapy. In patients with visible areas of increased lung density at earlier CT-examinations a decrease of focal findings was observed at 4 years. In patients without focal findings, an increase in density relative to that before therapy was observed. The difference between the mean lung density values among those with visible radiologic

A Case of Locally Advanced Breast Cancer in a 59-Year-Old Man Requiring a Modified Approach to Management.

BACKGROUND Male breast cancer is rare, accounting for approximately 1% of all malignancies in men. The lack of awareness of this rare cancer results in delayed diagnosis and its aggressive behavior can result in poor prognosis. This report is of a case of locally advanced, high-grade breast cancer in a 59-year-old man who was reluctant to undergo diagnostic procedures, and describes the approach to clinical management. CASE REPORT A 59-year-old man presented with a large left breast mass with enlarged axillary lymph nodes. The patient had ignored the mass and declined all diagnostic procedures

Cystosarcoma phyllodes: epidemiology, pathohistology, pathobiology, diagnosis, therapy, and survival.

Cystosarcoma phyllodes is a very rare tumor which maybe difficult to diagnose clinically. The epidemiology and pathobiology are different from those of breast carcinoma. Risk factors, multicentricity, bilaterality, as associated with breast carcinoma, are not observed in patients with cystosarcoma phyllodes. Although the term "sarcoma" indicates a malignant tumor, only 10%-30% of cystosarcomas are histologically diagnosed as malignant; clinical diagnosis of malignancy does not exceed 10%. Axillary node involvement is rare, but hematogenous spread of cystosarcoma occurs into lung, pleura, bone,

Intracystic papillary carcinoma of the male breast: Dilemmas in diagnosis and management.

Intracystic papillary carcinoma (IPC) is a rare malignancy of the breast which is usually found in postmenopausal women. It is still rarer in males and may present with signs of a benign cystic lump. It is sub-classified into three equally prevalent groups considering treatment strategies: intracystic papillary carcinoma alone, intracystic papillary carcinoma with ductal carcinoma in-situ, and those with evidence of invasion. Even if a preoperative diagnosis is achieved, there are no specific guidelines for the treatment of IPC. Treatment modalities including the extent of surgical excision, l

Axillary lymph node dissection for breast cancer: a decision analysis of T1 lesions.

BACKGROUND: The value of routine axillary dissection for patients with breast cancer is still being debated. The argument centers around whether the information gained by knowing the lymph node status, which aids in making the decision about adjuvant chemotherapy, justifies the morbidity. This study quantitatively analyzes the potential outcomes of routine, selective, and no axillary dissection. METHODS: A decision analysis was performed of the strategies of lumpectomy and radiation versus simple mastectomy followed by no dissection, selective dissection, or routine dissection. Factors includ

Bilateral infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast with osteoclast-like giant cells.

A case of bilateral infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast containing osteoclast-like giant cells is presented. Notable pathologic features include prominent tumor-associated angiogenesis and the presence of osteoclast-like giant cells in axillary lymph node metastases. Immunohistologic and ultrastructural examination support a nonepithelial, histiocytic origin for the giant cells, and results are similar to previous reports of osteoclast-like giant cells associated with breast carcinoma. This is the first report of bilateral pure infiltrating lobular carcinoma of the breast with osteocl

Factors influencing the use of breast reconstruction postmastectomy: a National Cancer Database study.

BACKGROUND: Advances in surgical techniques and changes in our understanding of the biology of breast cancer have made immediate or early breast reconstruction a viable option for the majority of women with breast cancer. Little is known about national patterns of use of reconstruction. This study was undertaken to determine national patterns of care and factors that influence the use of breast reconstruction. STUDY DESIGN: A large convenience sample reported to the National Cancer Data Base was studied. Patients coded as undergoing mastectomy between 1985 and 1990 (n = 155,463) and between 1

Beyond its Rarity: A 10-year Study on Primary Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Breast from a Tertiary Care Center.

INTRODUCTION: Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) of the breast is a rare malignancy (~0.1%), affecting women in their 50s-60s. It presents as a palpable mass with tubular, cribriform, and solid patterns and shows biphasic differentiation. C-Kit expression supports diagnosis. Despite its triple-negative status, AdCC has a favorable prognosis, except in solid-basaloid variants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in the Department of Histopathology, Apollo Cancer Center, Chennai, and included all cases of primary breast AdCC diagnosed between January 2014 and December 202

A Picture of Breast Reconstruction in a Public Oncology Hospital in Latin America: A Ten-Year Experience.

OBJECTIVE: Breast cancer is the most frequent malignant tumor among women worldwide, with the sole exception of non-melanoma skin cancer. Currently, one of the most common treatments in Brazil is modified radical mastectomy, which, although effective, leads to both physical and psychological complications. In this context, breast reconstruction seeks to restore the functional and psychosocial health of women. This study aims to investigate the characteristics of breast reconstructions after mastectomy by comparing immediate and delayed reconstructions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrosp

Myofibroblastic sarcoma of the breast. Report of a case induced by radiotherapys.

Myofibroblastic sarcoma (MFS) is an uncommon tumor rarely located in the breast. Ionizing radiation is a carcinogen capable of inducing sarcomas through DNA damage. A 42-year-old woman was diagnosed with synchronous bilateral breast infiltrating ductal carcinoma with axillary lymph node metastases on the left side. After modified left radical mastectomy and simple right mastectomy, she underwent postoperative radiation with a total volume dose of 50 Gy that included the thoracic wall and the left axillary-supraclavicular region. After a latency period of 6 years and 4 months, the patient devel

The implication of hot spots on bone scans within the irradiated field of breast cancer patients treated with mastectomy followed by radiotherapy.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the implication of abnormal hot spots in the irradiated field of patients treated with mastectomy followed by radiotherapy for breast cancer. METHODS: We reviewed 1842 consecutive bone scans performed on 292 patients treated with a modified radical mastectomy and followed by radiotherapy. If abnormal hot spots at the irradiated sites were detected in the bone scans, we evaluated further studies to determine whether bone metastases were present. Radiation was given using 4 or 6 MV X-rays at a dosage of 50.4 Gy during 5.5 weeks with a dosage per fraction of 1.8 Gy. The fol
