Metabolic syndrome (MS), a constellation of metabolic risk factors associated with development of cardiovascular diseases and Type 2 diabetes (T2D), has emerged as a public health problem of enormous proportions in developed and developing countries. We have reported previously its prevalence in several island populations of the Eastern Adriatic coast of Croatia. In spite of leading a relatively traditional life style pattern including adherence to a Mediterranean diet, the prevalence of MS in these populations is high and comparable to that in developed nations. However, data on prevalence of

Reindeer are either wild or kept under very extensive farming systems. They are seasonal breeders, with mating coinciding with the decreasing photoperiod in the autumn, and with calving in the spring. Little is known regarding the factors that influence reproduction in reindeer or of their reproductive physiology. Studies carried out to date have mainly focused on issues related to the population dynamics of wild populations and semi-domestic herds, and to a limited extent on the reproductive physiology of the female. Nor is much known about reproductive disorders and their medical treatment,

PROBLEM: At least two dendritic cell-associated molecules have been shown to contribute to the successful outcome of organ and tissue allografts in mice, namely CD200 and MD-1. CD200 is up-regulated in rodent transplantation models where successful inhibition of rejection is accomplished, and is believed to signal immunosuppression following engagement of a receptor, CD200R, on macrophages and/or gammadelta T-cell receptor (gammadelta TCR+ cells MD-1 is implicated in controlling expression of costimulatory molecules including CD80/CD86 which induce an immunorejection response, and thus inhibit

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal depression (PND) is the most common psychiatric disorder experienced during pregnancy and postpartum and is characterized by persistent low mood, difficulty adapting to gestational changes, helplessness, social withdrawal, and, in severe cases, suicidal or infanticidal thoughts. In this study, using a mouse model of PND, we examined the impact of PND on placental angioneurotrophic signaling, namely vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), VEGF receptor-1 (VEGFR1), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and determined whether placental hypoxia precipitates impai

In cattle, mating to intact, but not vasectomised, bulls has been shown to modify the endometrial transcriptome, suggesting an important role of sperm in the modulation of the uterine environment in this species. However, it is not clear whether these changes are driven by intrinsic sperm factors, or by factors of accessory gland (AG) origin that bind to sperm at ejaculation. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine whether ejaculated sperm, which are suspended in the secretions of the AGs, elicit a different endometrial transcriptomic response than epididymal sperm, which have

The Smyth line (SL) chicken is an animal model for human vitiligo, a common acquired depigmentary disorder affecting about 1-2% of people worldwide. The vitiligo-like depigmentation in SL chickens typically develops when the birds are between 6 and 14 weeks of age and may affect 70-95% of hatch mates. The development of SL vitiligo is considered to depend on two interacting components, namely an inherent melanocyte defect and an autoimmune reaction to melanocytes. Recently, a role for an environmental factor in the expression of vitiligo was suggested by the observation that only 10% of SL chi

Nicotine is a primary alkaloid-derived secondary metabolite found in tobacco (Nicotiana spp.). Excessive light exposure damages chloroplasts and enhances the production of protective secondary metabolites. However, the impact of high light (HL) on nicotine biosynthesis has not been thoroughly explored. We used a comprehensive array of physiological, biochemical, and transgenic analyses to elucidate the role of abscisic acid (ABA)-insensitive 4 (NaABI4) in HL-induced nicotine accumulation in wild tobacco (Nicotiana attenuata). NaABI4, which encodes a key mediator in the retrograde signaling pat

Sexual selection theory provides a framework for investigating the evolution of traits involved in attracting and competing for mates. Given the sexual function of such traits, studies generally focus on individual interactions (i.e., displays and contests) in explaining trait origin and persistence. We show that ecological factors can strongly influence the adaptive value of these traits, and changes to these factors can lead to rapid evolutionary change. We compared sexually selected traits in the small Indian mongoose (Urva auropunctata) between their sparsely populated native range and fou

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA), a leading cause of uterine infertility, is characterized by endometrial fibrosis. Implementing an appropriate animal model is essential for the research on the mechanisms of IUA. In the present study, we established and evaluated different intrauterine adhesion modeling procedures in rats to provide a reference for researchers. Rat IUA models were established by mechanical injury, 95% ethanol injection, and dual (mechanical injury with infection) injury. After two estrus cycles, the female rats were mated with sexually mature male rats, and uterine tissues were obt

Metformin plasma exposure is increased in rats with thioacetamide (TAA)-induced liver failure. The absorption, distribution, and excretion process of metformin is mainly mediated by organic cation transporters (OCTs) and multidrug and toxin extrusion transporters (MATEs). To investigate the mechanisms of the increase in TAA-induced metformin plasma exposure, we employed intestinal perfusion and urinary excretion assays to evaluate the changes in the absorption and excretion of metformin and used Western blotting to investigate the metformin-related transport proteins' expression changes and me

Maté is a tea-like beverage consumed mainly in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, southern Brazil and to a lesser degree in other areas of the world such as Germany, Syria, Lebanon and Northern Israel. It is brewed from the dried leaves and stemlets of the perennial tree Ilex paraguarensis ("yerba mate") a species that belongs to the Aquifoliaceae family. Maté consumption has been associated with an increased rate of oral and oropharyngeal cancers. The purpose of this study is to review the literature and discuss the role of Maté consumption in the development of oral and oropharyngeal cancer and t

Without a fully developed and functioning initial segment, the most proximal region of the epididymis, male infertility results. Therefore, it is important to understand the development of the initial segment. During postnatal development of the epididymis, many cellular processes of the initial segment are regulated by lumicrine factors, which are produced by the testis and enter the epididymis with testicular luminal fluid. In this report, we showed that prior to Postnatal Day 15 (P15), the initial segment was lumicrine factor independent in the mouse. However, from P19 onward, lumicrine fac

Many factors negatively affect pregnancy establishment and subsequent fetal growth and development, including maternal factors such as nutritional stress, age, body mass index, and genetic background, and external factors including environmental stress, psychosocial stress, multiple fetuses, medical conditions (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome), lifestyle choices (e.g., alcohol consumption, smoking), and assisted reproductive technologies. These same factors have similar consequences for placental growth and development, including vascular development. We and others have shown that placental va

BACKGROUND: Bovine congestive heart failure (BCHF) has become increasingly prevalent among feedlot cattle in the Western Great Plains of North America with up to 7% mortality in affected herds. BCHF is an untreatable complex condition involving pulmonary hypertension that culminates in right ventricular failure and death. Genes associated with BCHF in feedlot cattle have not been previously identified. Our aim was to search for genomic regions associated with this disease.
METHODS: A retrospective, matched case-control design with 102 clinical BCHF cases and their unaffected pen mates was use

Researchers have long examined the structure of animal advertisement signals, but comparatively little is known about how often these signals are repeated and what factors predict variation in signaling rate across species. Here, we focus on acoustic advertisement signals to test the hypothesis that calling males experience a tradeoff between investment in the duration or complexity of individual calls and investment in signaling over long time periods. This hypothesis predicts that the number of signals that a male produces per 24 h will negatively correlate with (1) the duration of sound tha

BACKGROUND: Inhibition of the key costimulatory signals results in T cell anergy, indicating the alloantigen-specific immunologic unresponsiveness. In this study, the effect of blockage of costimulatory signal CD(86) on murine abortion-prone model was studied.
METHODS: Thirty CBA/J female mice cohabitated with DBA/2 male or BALB/c male mice were investigated. CBA/J x DBA/2 matings were used as the abortion-prone model, and CBA/J x BALB/c matings were used as the normal pregnant model. The abortion-prone models were divided into experimental and control groups, and the normal pregnant models w

The ability to track gonadal activity is essential for understanding the fundamentals of reproduction. Faecal steroid metabolite monitoring is a well established tool for evaluating reproductive processes in diverse mammalian species, including felids. Domestic cats were used as a model and injection of radiolabelled oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol revealed that > 85% of metabolites were excreted in faeces with a time lag of 12-24 h. Steroids were extracted by boiling faecal material (wet or dry) in 90% aqueous ethanol followed by immunoassay with group-specific antibodies

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In kidney transplantation, the relative contribution of donor versus other factors on clinical outcomes is unknown. We sought to quantify overall donor effects on transplant outcomes for kidney donations from deceased donors.
DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS: For paired donations from deceased donors resulting in transplants to different recipients, the magnitude of donor effects can be quantified by examining the excess of concordant outcomes within kidney pairs beyond chance concordance. Using data from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Networ
