BACKGROUND Schwannomas are benign tumors of Schwann cell origin, and their intraosseous presentation in the infraorbital region is exceptionally rare. We report a case in which computed tomography (CT) revealed an expansile lesion in this location, subsequently diagnosed as a cellular schwannoma. This report underscores the importance of histological analysis in the differential diagnosis of infraorbital lesions, particularly to distinguish schwannoma from entities such as neurofibroma. CASE REPORT Our patient was a 31-year-old man with right infraorbital facial pain, described as an "electric

PURPOSE: To analyze morphological characteristics and dimensions of the infraorbital canal-groove complex using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and to evaluate its relationship with adjacent anatomical structures.
METHODS: This retrospective study included CBCT scans of 100 patients taken between January and May 2014. Linear measurements of the infraorbital canal (IOC), the infraorbital groove (IOG) and the infraorbital canal-groove complex (IOC/G) were performed. Morphological variants of the IOC related to the maxillary sinus were classified into three types depending on the extent of

Herpes zoster along the maxillary division of the trigeminal nerve is a rare condition that is caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus that resides within the trigeminal ganglion after the primary infection of chickenpox. The disease may be manifested as a toothache during its prodromal stage. The active stage of the disease is characterized by the appearance of a vesicular rash. Postherpetic neuralgia is a common complication of herpes zoster after resolution of the facial and intraoral symptoms. There is increasing evidence for herpes zoster patients to develop stroke later in l

The anatomy of the nose of the koala was studied from fixed 0.5 cm thick sections of a whole head. Right and left nasal cavities are separated by a slender septum which does not exhibit 'swell bodies'. Dorsal and ventral conchae are simple curved plates without elaborate scrolls; the ventral concha is recurved to form a bulla. The nasal cavity communicates with confluent rostral maxillary and frontal air sinuses. A ventrocaudal maxillary sinus opens from the ventral meatus close to the choanae. There is a frontal sinus dorsocaudal to the ethmoid region which does not communicate with the nasal

Distal internal carotid artery exposure can be technically demanding even for experienced vascular surgeons. Although a variety of techniques have been described to facilitate such exposure, temporary mandibular subluxation has emerged as the simplest and least debilitating approach. Current techniques for maintaining temporary mandibular subluxation during distal internal carotid artery procedures, including maxillomandibular arch bar fixation and circummandibular/transnasal wiring, have been time consuming and associated with complications. Over the last 4 years a new simplified technique of

Introduction Basic knowledge of anatomy is crucial in providing predictable, safe, and efficacious mandibular anesthesia as the mandibular nerve is vulnerable to injury during dental procedures and other surgical manoeuvers. The lack of availability of the appropriate topographical bony landmarks for the location of the branches of this nerve often accounts for iatrogenic injuries and the failure to obtain adequate local anesthaesia. Hence we aimed to describe the topographical landmarks of the branches of the mandibular nerve and their variations in the infratemporal fossa. Methodology In 16

Gustatory rhinorrhea consists of free discharge of thin mucus from the nose during ingestion or after other gustatory stimulus. At maxillectomy, the nerve fibers going both to the salivary glands of the palate and to the secretory glands of the nasal mucosa may be damaged. A misdirection between the regenerating fibers of these two groups produces gustatory rhinorrhea.

Certain head and neck malignancies tend to invade branches of the cranial nerves and progress centripetally. The maxillary and mandibular divisions of the V (trigeminal) nerve are the most commonly invaded, but the VII (facial) nerve may harbor extensions of primary parotid malignancies and/or skin cancers originating in or near the ear. Paresis of the VII nerve signifies a serious but not entirely hopeless situation if countered with an appropriate surgical procedure. The optimal treatment of malignancies invading cranial nerves is surgical excision, which may necessitate removal of substanti

A 77-year-old-man with arterial hypertension, diabetes mellitus type II presented at our clinic for a routine ophthalmological exam. He complained of intermittent double vision. The ophthalmic examination revealed paralysis of III (n. oculomotorius) and VI (n. abducens) cranial nerves with ptosis, deficit in elevation and abduction of the left eye. The patient underwent urgent MRI imaging of the brain/orbits and paranasal sinuses, and urgent neurological assessment. MRI revealed a volume-occupying process, starting from the posterior wall of the left maxillary sinus with perineural diffusion a

A 44-year-old man, active cocaine consumer, who referred decrease in visual acuity in the right eye in 24 hours of evolution, being 0,05 in that eye and 1 in the left eye. The examination showed a relative afferent pupil defect and a swelling head of optic nerve. The systemic studies performed were normal, except the nuclear magnetic resonance of the brain that showed a thickening of the maxillary and frontal sinus mucosa, compatible with sinusitis. Hospital admission and the start of intravenous corticosteroid treatment were decided, with a favourable evolution, a visual acuity of 1.0 in both

Extracranial trigeminal schwannomas are rare tumors accounting for about 10% of all trigeminal schwannomas. We report herein on four cases of extracranial trigeminal benign neurogenic tumors. The patients were aged between 39 and 75 years; they consisted of one male and three females. The origins of the schwannomas consisted of the maxillary nerve in two cases and the mandibular nerve in two cases. All cases were surgically treated using a transmaxillary approach in three cases, and a combination of the transcervical-parotid approach with a midline mandibulotomy in one case. In two cases, the …

Sinonasal Schwannomas represent less than 4% of all head and neck Schwannomas. These neural sheath tumors arise from the ophthalmic and maxillary divisions of the trigeminal nerve, as well as autonomic nerves from sympathetic fibers of the carotid plexus and parasympathetic fibers of the sphenopalatine ganglion. Patients commonly present with nonspecific symptoms such as nasal obstruction, epistaxis, and anosmia. Nasal endoscopy usually reveals a unilateral polypoid mass. Diagnostic imaging with computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) is typically nonspecific. Diagnosis may be del

Pituitary apoplexy (PA) is an expansion of a pituitary adenoma due to infarction or hemorrhage of the gland. The term apoplexy usually describes larger bleeds leading to a sudden onset of symptoms. Although it is a rare condition, it can be a life-threatening emergency. PA usually presents with severe headache, nausea, vomiting, visual acuity, and field defects, frequently involving the cranial nerves directly adjacent to the pituitary gland, including third (oculomotor) cranial nerve, fourth (trochlear) cranial nerve, ophthalmic and maxillary branches of the fifth (trigeminal) cranial nerve,

Dental implant placement requires a great level of accuracy given the risk of iatrogenic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve and maxillary sinus. Real-time impedance sensing of the surrounding tissues by the drill tip can provide feedback to the surgeon for improved outcomes and reduced risk of injury. Previous studies have shown impedance sensing to successfully discriminate between cortical and cancellous bone in ex vivo and in situ large animal tissue. Understanding electrical properties of tissues in a cadaver model is essential to developing human-centered sensor and tissue classificati

The anterior end of the mammalian face is characteristically composed of a semimotile nose, not the upper jaw as in other tetrapods. Thus, the therian nose is covered ventrolaterally by the "premaxilla," and the osteocranium possesses only a single nasal aperture because of the absence of medial bony elements. This stands in contrast to those in other tetrapods in whom the premaxilla covers the rostral terminus of the snout, providing a key to understanding the evolution of the mammalian face. Here, we show that the premaxilla in therian mammals (placentals and marsupials) is not entirely homo

OBJECTIVES: The infraorbital canal (IOC), which runs in the roof of the maxillary sinus, is a useful anatomical landmark for the infraorbital nerve (ION) on computed tomography (CT) images. Enlargement of the IOC on CT images is thought to be a pathological state that usually affects the ION. However, we have frequently observed enlargement of the IOC in patients with a history of radical surgery of the maxillary sinus: so-called Caldwell-Luc (CL) surgery. In this study, the size of the IOC of the maxillary sinus was compared between patients with a history of CL surgery (post-CL IOCs) and tho

Reconstruction after total maxillectomy with preservation of the orbital contents is technically more challenging than when the maxillectomy is combined with orbital exenteration. It results in severe complications if the orbital content is not supported. We would like to introduce a new technique using free rectus abdominis myocutaneous (RAM) flap with anterior rectus sheath to support the orbital content in a patient who underwent globe-sparing total maxillectomy. The large resection of the recurrent maxillary peripheral nerve sheath tumor was performed in a 34-year-old male patient. Right f
