Evaluation of the Prevalence of Maxillary Sinuses Abnormalities through Spiral Computed Tomography (CT).

Introduction Maxillary sinus disease is common and numerous disorders can affect this anatomical area. Abnormalities can be classified as: non-neoplastic, neoplastic benign, and neoplastic malignant. Objective Evaluate through CT the prevalence of diseases in maxillary sinuses, using the Radiology Department's database of a hospital in São Paulo city. Methods The sample consisted of 762 facial CT scans that we divided into three groups: Group A (12-19 years old); Group B (20-49 years old); Group C (above 50 years old); and male or female. We considered the following pathological processes: I -

[Correlation studies in goats about the membrane thickness and pressure of the maxillary and frontal sinuses].

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the differences of membrane thickness and pressure on the paranasal sinus membrane in goats and analyze their causes. The results can provide theoretical basis and guidance for the issues of the maxillary sinus floor augmentation related to the membrane. METHODS: The membrane was cut into two sizes from every sinus membrane. The membrane was fixed in formalin to obtain tissue specimens for the membrane thickness study and pressure study. The correlation between the two parameters was then analyzed, and appropriate statistical methods and software were se

Aperture width of the osteomeatal complex as a predictor of successful treatment of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis.

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) is an inflammatory disease caused by the spread of dental inflammation into the sinus. The long-term administration of antibiotic medicine and/or treatment of the causative tooth are the usual initial treatments. These initial treatments are not always effective, and the reason is not well understood. The purpose of this study was to identify factors of significance that may contribute to the results of the initial treatment of OMS. Thirty-nine patients were studied, divided into two groups according to the results of initial treatment: effective or non-ef…

Quantification of airflow into the maxillary sinuses before and after functional endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: The effects of increases in maxillary sinus (MS) airflow following functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) are unknown. The goal of this study was to quantify the effects of FESS on airflow into the MS in a cohort of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis, and compare MS flow rate with patient-reported outcome measures. METHODS: A pilot study was conducted in which preoperative and postoperative computed tomography scans of 4 patients undergoing bilateral or unilateral FESS were used to create 3-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of the nasal airway and paranasal sinuses using Mimi

Use of pharmacodynamic end points in the evaluation of gatifloxacin for the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis.

The relationship between drug exposure and the time course of antimicrobial effect at the primary infection site for acute maxillary sinusitis has not previously been explored. This single-center, open-label study quantified the time course of sinus sterilization, described gatifloxacin exposure at the infection site, and posed the hypothesis that the use of continuous and quantitative time-related end points may allow for better characterization of drug effect with fewer patients than traditional clinical trial approaches. Of the 12 enrolled patients, 10 were clinically evaluable, from whom 7…

[Osteo-gingivoplasty in the combined treatment of periodontitis and in the prevention of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis at a polyclinic].

The authors suggest a method for surgical treatment of periodontitis using allogenic demineralized bone tissue of adults and fetuses. This method was effectively used at dentistry clinics of the Samara Province starting from 1984. A total of 177 patients with generalized and local periodontitis of medium and grave severity aged 19 to 55 were operated on. The process stabilized, the teeth were fortified. The method is effective not only therapy of periodontitis, but for prevention of its complications as well, of odontogenic maxillary sinusitis among other conditions.

The comparative efficacy and safety of clarithromycin and amoxycillin in the treatment of outpatients with acute maxillary sinusitis.

The efficacy and safety of clarithromycin and amoxycillin in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis were compared in a single-blind, multicentre outpatient study. Fifty patients were randomly assigned to receive either clarithromycin 500 mg 12-hourly or amoxycillin 500 mg 8-hourly orally. Clinical signs and symptoms, sinus culture and blood and urine laboratory profiles were assessed prior to treatment, at four to six days during treatment, and within 48 h of the end of therapy (usually 9-11 days). Patients from whom beta-lactamase producing strains were isolated were excluded from the stu…

Fungal ball-type maxillary sinusitis associated with Penicillium species: A case report and management perspective.

Penicillium is a diverse genus of fungus that widely exists in the environment and is often non-pathogenic. Only a handful of literature have reported its association as a cause of infection in humans. Here, we report a case of a Penicillium maxillary sinus fungal ball in an elderly man complaining of chronic headache, progressive unilateral nasal blockage and post-nasal drip. The role of Penicillium in a fungal ball and management are further discussed.

Treatment strategies for orbital gas-producing necrotizing fasciitis secondary to odontogenic maxillary sinusitis: Technical notes.

This paper presents treatment strategies for orbital necrotizing fasciitis (NF) in a case of a 33-year-old male diagnosed with orbital NF, which developed after dental root canal treatment. Although orbital NF is rare, it is rapidly progressive and can easily lead to the loss of tissue and visual function, sometimes to a life-threatening extent. Prompt and adequate treatment has been a challenge yet remains quite essential. In addition to the conventional approach to NF, such as immediate antibiotic administration and drainage, orbital NF patients like this case were often treated by incorpora

Combining sinus plain film and sinus ultrasound as a screening tool for maxillary fungal sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Early identification of fungal sinusitis remains a challenge. Previously, we observed a high false negative rate of using A-mode ultrasound to diagnose maxillary fungal sinusitis. This study aims to assess the accuracy of the diagnosis of fungal maxillary sinusitis using sinus plain film and ultrasound. METHODS: The screening criteria is defined as the combination of a positive sinus plain film and a false negative sinus ultrasound. We retrospectively reviewed preoperative imaging of patients with fungal sinusitis and unilateral bacterial sinusitis of the maxillary sinus undergoin…

Maxillary sinusitis caused by retained dental impression material: An unusual case report and literature review.

Surgical procedures in posterior area of maxillary might cause an oroantral communication and iatrogenic sinusitis. An undetected oroantral communication can cause the penetration of foreign bodies, such as dental impression materials, in the maxillary sinus, thereby contributing to persistent sinusitis. Given the occurrence of a very rare clinical and medicolegal case of persistent and drug-resistant sinusitis due to radiologically undetected fragments of silicone paste for dental impression in the maxillary antrum, a literature review was pursued through sensitive keywords in relevant databa
