[Optic neuritis and measles infection].

Optic neuritis has been reported as a complication of measles encephalitis. This resembles to parainfectious optic neuritis following other virus infections. We mentioned pathology, therapy of this disease, and summarized our previous cases. Intravenous methylpredonisolone treatment is effective from our experience.

Pancreatic enzyme elevation in measles.

During an outbreak of measles in the period from May 1993 through February 1994, a 23-year-old woman with measles was admitted because of abdominal pain and vomiting. Intradermal administration of measles vaccines.

The aim of the study reported here was to determine if bifurcated needles or multiple puncture cylinders would prove suitable for administration of measles vaccines. Children 9 to 11 months old in São Paulo, Brazil, were assigned to receive either Biken-Cam 70 (5,000 TCID50/0.5 ml) or Edmonston-Zagreb (7,000 TCID50/0.5 ml) measles vaccines intradermally with a bifurcated needle or a multiple puncture cylinder. Risk factors for severe measles.

A retrospective study on measles was carried out in 522 children admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Sumber Waras Hospital, Jakarta during the period of January 1982-December 1986. Most of the subjects (91.1%) came from lower socio-economic levels, living in unfavorable environmental conditions in crowded housing. Measles associated with coronary arteritis.

A two-year-old girl with measles virus (MV) and chronic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection developed lethal coronary aneurysmal arteritis accompanied by giant cell pneumonia, systemic lymphadenitis and hepatosplenomegaly. In her coronary arteries, lungs and aorta, cells containing intranuclear and intracytoplasmic inclusions, including syncytial giant cells, were detected, the presence of MV in the organs being proved by electron microscopic and immunofluorescent studies. Ribavirin response in measles pneumonia.

A 9-year-old boy with Hodgkin's disease developed measles 1 month after completing eight courses of intensive anti-cancer chemotherapy. The atypical nature of the rash and the absence of Koplik's spots indicated a high risk of progression to fatal giant cell pneumonia. Seven days nebulised and intravenous ribavirin therapy produced apparent recovery. Two weeks later the child presented with measles giant cell pneumonia diagnosed on open lung biopsy. Ribavirin therapy was again successful. The role of ribavirin in the treatment of measles in immunocompromised children is discussed.
