Trends and key correlates of prescription opioid injection misuse in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Despite concerns over increasing harms associated with prescription opioid injection misuse, there is a paucity of research on the magnitude, characteristics, injection practices, and syringe sources for people who inject prescription opioids; limiting the implementation of targeted policy and programmatic initiatives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the 2003 through 2014 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health were used to estimate prescription opioid injection trends and examine risky injection practices and syringe sources for people who inject prescription opioids. Multivaria

Health behaviors and infant health outcomes in homeless pregnant women in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: To describe selected demographics; maternal health behaviors before, during, and after pregnancy; and infant health outcomes among homeless women in the United States. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Analyses are based on Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System data from 31 participating states from 2000 to 2007 that were linked to birth certificate data, which contain demographic and medical information collected through the state's vital records system. Responses were then weighted to be representative of all women who gave birth in each state during that year. Assessment of these data

Acute hospital costs of pediatric trauma in the United States: how much and who pays?

National estimates of the numbers and expenditures associated with hospitalization due to injury among children (aged 0 to 14) were derived using data from the 1984, 1985, and 1986 National Hospital Discharge Surveys (NHDS) and the 1980 National Medical Care Utilization and Expenditures Study (NMCUES). In this report, age- and sex-specific estimates of the numbers of hospital admissions and expenditures are reported for subgroup of patients defined by external cause of the injury and by nature and severity of the injury. In 1985, over 266,000 children sustained a traumatic injury resulting in

Obesity in America.

Recent data indicate that Americans are gaining weight at an alarming rate. In fact, data from the CDC indicate that the U.S. obesity average was 12% in 1990 and had grown to 23% by 2005. In recent years, this problem appears to be more prominent in some southern states than in other states. The purpose of this study was to determine what factors were associated with increased levels of obesity. Do demographic, educational, healthcare, or economic factors correlate with this trend? Using state level data in a fixed effects regression model we examined obesity rates for the period 1990-2003. We

[Health status and medical care accessibility of single, homeless persons].

The homeless population in Germany is continually increasing. Featuring prominently among those on the increase are women, young persons and homeless people from East Germany. Studies of the health of homeless individuals in recent years show that indices of illness are far higher for many disorders than for comparable groups who are housed. One result from a recent study by the University of Mainz (1994) was that more than 90% of homeless people urgently need medical treatment. According this research, the main health problems of the homeless are: cardiac disease (hypertension, CAD) (52.5%),

Protecting workers with cancer in low- and middle-income countries: Policy lessons with global relevance.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Jordan, often affecting people in their prime working years. The ability to remain employed during or after treatment is essential for financial stability, access to care, and well-being. Yet, legal protections for workers with cancer remain limited. This narrative review examines whether Jordanian labor and social protection laws safeguard the right of patients with cancer to work. It compares Jordan's legal framework with international policies from countries across income levels and provides policy recommendations based on

Barriers beyond behavior: structural determinants of behavioral health treatment disparities among Hispanics in the U.S.

BACKGROUND: Persistent disparities in substance use treatment access undermine efforts to achieve equitable public health outcomes in the United States. Hispanic populations, who report lower prevalence of substance use, nevertheless face systemic barriers to care. This study examines how socioeconomic status, insurance coverage, and ethnicity influence treatment utilization and perceived barriers, with attention to structural and sociocultural factors shaping disparities. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2023 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (N = 56,705). Logi

Community pharmacists' public health role in addressing the appropriate use of over-the-counter oral contraception.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), half of the 6.1 million pregnancies per year in the United States are unintended. Minority and low socioeconomic status (SES) women are at increased risk of unintended pregnancy and face disparities in accessing contraception. On July 13, 2023, the U.S. FDA approved Opill (norgestrel) tablets as the first daily oral contraceptive (OC) approved for nonprescription use in the United States for the prevention of pregnancy. As a progestin-only pill (POP), norgestrel provides a method of oral contraception with minimal side effects and fewer

Understanding Primary Care Physician Perspectives on the Diagnosis and Management of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Qualitative Study.

Primary care physicians (PCPs) are well suited to manage patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but the limited, existing research suggests inadequate knowledge about the natural history, diagnostic methods, and management of NAFLD. The purpose of this qualitative study is to further understand the knowledge and practices for the diagnosis and management of NAFLD among PCPs. We conducted in-depth interviews with PCPs in the Greater Houston area, addressing current clinical practices used for diagnosing and managing NAFLD, as well as the perceptions of the PCPs regarding the b

Pharmacist-led hormonal contraceptive prescribing service in a Federally Qualified Health Center: Initial implementation outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The United States has a higher rate of unintended pregnancy than many other developed countries, and Indiana's unintended pregnancy rate is above the national average. Unintended pregnancy rates are highest among low-income women. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) provide care for the underserved and uninsured patient population. OBJECTIVE: To determine the acceptability, adoption, appropriateness, and feasibility of a pharmacist-led hormonal contraception prescribing service within a FQHC through a collaborative drug therapy management protocol. METHODS: An explanatory m

A decade of experience promoting the clinical treatment of tobacco dependence in Wisconsin.

BACKGROUND: The University of Wisconsin Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (UW-CTRI) is the designated lead agency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison charged with the responsibility of reducing the harms from tobacco use in Wisconsin and beyond. In 2000, the UW-CTRI, with funding from the state of Wisconsin, launched a population-wide effort--the Wisconsin Cessation Outreach Program (Program)--to increase the availability and use of evidence-based clinical treatments for tobacco dependence. This paper describes the Program's strategies, outcomes, and impact on the clinical treatm

Outcomes among buprenorphine-naloxone primary care patients after Hurricane Sandy.

BACKGROUND: The extent of damage in New York City following Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 was unprecedented. Bellevue Hospital Center (BHC), a tertiary public hospital, was evacuated and temporarily closed as a result of hurricane-related damages. BHC's large primary care office-based buprenorphine clinic was relocated to an affiliate public hospital for three weeks. The extent of environmental damage and ensuing service disruption effects on rates of illicit drug, tobacco, and alcohol misuse, buprenorphine medication supply disruptions, or direct resource losses among office-based buprenorp

Community Health Center Penetration and Kidney Care Outcomes among Low-Income, Nonelderly Adults with Kidney Failure.

KEY POINTS: Populations who experience health disparities often rely on community health centers (CHCs) for ambulatory care. Among low-income populations, higher CHC penetration is associated with greater preparedness for, and better outcomes after, kidney failure onset. Our study suggests that CHCs provide essential ambulatory care for nonelderly adults who experience kidney health disparities. BACKGROUND: In the United States, historically minoritized populations experience disproportionately high incidence of progressive kidney disease but are often unprepared for kidney failure. Owing to
