A large body of evidence indicates that high intakes of fruit and vegetables are associated with a reduced risk of cancer at several sites. The association is generally most marked for epithelial cancers, apparently stronger for those of the digestive and respiratory tracts, and somewhat weaker for hormone-related cancers. The relationship between frequency of consumption of vegetables and fruit and cancer risk was analysed using data from a series of case-control studies conducted in northern Italy since 1983. The relative risks (RRs) for most common neoplasms ranged from 0.2 to 0.5 for the h

Atypical naevi are markers for increased risk of malignant melanoma, providing additional information about melanoma risk beyond that given by common melanocytic naevi. Little is known about the epidemiology of atypical naevi (AN), and available data are limited to predominantly fair-skinned populations. By using a case-control study that included 705 subjects with atypical naevi and 1,782 controls, we have analysed the aetiology of AN in a Mediterranean population, paying particular attention to the role of sunburn. After adjusting for age, sex and years of formal education, the presence of a

Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) is an autosomal, recessively inherited multisystem disease that affects various groups of people originating from the Mediterranean Sea region, most specifically those of Jewish, Turkish, Armenian, and Arabic ethnicity. Recurrent attacks of fever and sterile polyserositis of the peritoneum, synovial membranes, and pleura are the main clinical features, although the clinical features of FMF have been expanded in recent years to also include severe myalgia, scrotal swelling, cardiac involvement, and protracted febrile myalgia syndrome (PFMS). PFMS is seen in on

Ischemic stroke and its chronic cerebrovascular complications represent significant public health challenges with considerable societal impa … vely influences vascular health. The MedDiet, long established as the traditional eating pattern in Mediterranean regions, is an effective means of counteracting factors that jeopardize vascular health and elevate the risk of acute events. To date, there are no narrative reviews that have addressed the impact of the Mediterranean diet on cerebrovascular risk and the c …

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a neurotropic zoonotic nematode that has recently expanded into Mediterranean Europe, with reports from Mallo … e of the two haplotypes previously reported in Europe, consistent with low genetic diversity in the Mediterranean region. Together, these findings indicate heterogeneous and focal circulation of A. cantonensis in rats from Mallorca and underscore the limitations of relying solely on definitive hosts for surveillance. This study advances understanding of the ecoepidemi …

OBJECTIVES: West Nile Virus (WNV) is endemic in Israel and was responsible for several outbreaks in the past 16 years. The aim of the present study was to investigate the spatial distribution of WNV acute infections from an outbreak that occurred in 2015 in Israel and report the molecular and geographic characterization of WNV isolates from human cases and mosquito pools obtained during this outbreak.
METHODS: Using a geographical layer comprising 51 continuous areas of Israel, the number of WNV infection cases per 100 000 people in each area and the locations of WNV-infected mosquitoes in 20

This study summarizes the findings of a comprehensive field investigation into the presence of Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a zoonotic nematode responsible for meningitis, in selected regions of the eastern Mediterranean. Samples were collected from intermediate hosts (gastropods), definitive hosts (rats), and potential paratenic hosts (reptiles) across Cyprus and the northern part of Egypt. Reptile and gastropod samples were analysed using a species-specific and highly sensitive LAMP assay, while rats were dissected and examined for adult nematodes in their pulmonary arteries. All samples fro

INTRODUCTION: Mediterranean spotted fever is an infection caused by Rickettsia conorii that is endemic to the Mediterranean basin. It is mainly transmitted by ticks. The association between this infection and Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is uncommon.
OBSERVATION: We present the case of a 29-year-old Tunisian patient with no prior medical conditions who presented with flaccid quadriplegia that progressed to respiratory distress. This was accompanied by persistent fever and hepatosplenomegaly. Acute motor axonal GBS was diagnosed through electroneuromyography, and R. conorii infection was diag

We have carried out a systematic study of the molecular basis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency on a sample of 53 male subjects from Calabria, in southern Italy. Our sequential approach consisted of the following steps: (1) Partial biochemical characterization was used to pinpoint candidate known variants. The identity of these was then verified by restriction-enzyme or allele-specific oligonucleotide hybridization analysis of the appropriate PCR-amplified fragment. (2) On samples for which there was no obvious candidate mutation, we proceeded to amplify the entire coding

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: This paper illustrates the results of a study carried out in the Etna Regional Park (Eastern Sicily, Italy) concerning the traditional knowledge on medicinal use of wild plant species. It contains the results of a quantitative analysis carried out for the first time. A total of 71 wild species are used for medicinal purposes. Two species, Astracantha sicula (Biv.) Greuter and Trifolium phleoides Willd., are little known as medicinal in the Mediterranean area. The main aim of the study was to understand to what extent current knowledge on the medicinal use of pla

BACKGROUND: Chronic infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) has a long-term impact on hepatic consequences. A comprehensive evaluation of the global burden of HCV-related health outcomes can help to develop a global HCV prevention and treatment program.
METHODS: We used the 2019 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study to comprehensively investigate burden and temporal trends in incidence, mortality and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of HCV-related diseases, including liver cancer and cirrhosis and other liver diseases across 264 countries and territories from 2010 to 2019.
RESULTS: Globa

Sleep is a multidimensional health domain influenced by behavioural, psychological, and lifestyle factors. However, multinational evidence integrating insomnia severity and multiple sleep outcomes within the Mediterranean lifestyle framework remains limited. This study examined correlates of insomnia severity and key sleep outcomes in adults from Mediterranean and neighbouring countries participating in the MEDIET4ALL survey. Data were collected from 4010 adults (59.5% female) across 10 countries using a standardized multilingual e-survey. Insomnia severity was assessed as primary outcome usin

Thalassemia is a common inherited disease in the Mediterranean region. We here report a mutation new to the Lebanese population: the insertion of a G nucleotide at codons 8/9 [(+G) AAG-TCT (Lys-Ser) --> AAG-G-TCT (beta0)] of the beta-globin gene in a thalassemic patient with a mild phenotype. We discuss the possible factors that play a role in alleviating the severity of the disease in this case.

Human infection with the sheep liver fluke Fasciola hepatica is a global zoonosis that usually parallels the prevalence of infection in sheep and other ruminants. The disease is endemic in South and Central America, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean region, many parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Australia, and China. There have been a number of focal outbreaks reported from Europe, including southern France and the Mediterranean region. Since acute fascioliasis has rarely been reported in the United States, physicians in this country frequently overlook the diagnosis. Therefore, we report a cas…
