The cognitive neuroscience of schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia experience a range of cognitive deficits and associated dysfunctions in the neural systems that support cognitive processes. This chapter reviews the literature on disturbances in working memory, executive control, and episodic memory in schizophrenia. Advances in basic cognitive neuroscience are described to help explain the cognitive neuroscience of schizophrenia. For working memory in schizophrenia, evidence is reviewed regarding deficits in the verbal (phonological loop) and nonverbal (visual-spatial scratch pad) buffer systems as well as in the central execu

Trajectories of self-reported hearing and their associations with cognition: evidence from the United Kingdom and United States of America.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationships between trajectories of change in self-reported hearing over eight years with subsequent effects on cognition, measured using episodic memory. METHODS: Data were drawn from 5 waves (2008-2016) of the English Longitudinal Study of England (ELSA) and the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), involving 4,875 individuals aged 50+ at the baseline in ELSA and 6,365 in HRS. The latent growth curve modelling was used to identify trajectories of hearing over eight years, and linear regression models were performed to investigate the relationshi

The Pervasiveness of Power: Dilemmas for Researchers of Major System Change in Healthcare Comment on "'Attending to History' in Major System Change in Healthcare in England: Specialist Cancer Surgery Service Reconfiguration".

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: A large body of research has demonstrated that, although specific memory activities can enhance the memory performance of healthy older adults, the extent of the increment is negatively associated with age. Conversely, few studies have examined the case of healthy elderly people not living alone. This study has two mains goals: to understand whether older adults with limited autonomy can benefit from activities devoted to increasing their episodic memory performance, and to test the efficacy of a memory training program based on autobiographical memories, in terms of trans

Gonadal hormones and cognitive aging: a midlife perspective.

Gonadal steroids affect a variety of brain processes. Cognitive consequences of hormonal changes associated with menopause are of scientific interest and of relevance to public health. Natural menopause is a normal physiological process that can only be directly studied through observational research. Similarly, surgical menopause in humans is rarely directly amenable to experimental research. Causality with respect to cognitive outcomes is, therefore, difficult to infer. Cross-sectional and longitudinal findings from the Melbourne Women's Midlife Health Project, the Study of Women's Health Ac

Emotional enhancement of memory in Alzheimer's disease dementia: a systematic review.

Progressive decline in episodic memory is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Emotional arousal is known to enhance memory. Enhanced encoding of emotionally arousing stimuli or events may improve memory in patients with AD; however, whether this effect is present in patients with AD remains unclear. Here we conducted a systematic search of the literature to identify relevant literature on emotional enhancement of memory in AD. Inclusion criteria were studies that (1) included individuals with Alzheimer's disease and (2) assessed emotional memory, particularly episodic memory. Thirty-five s

Neural population dynamics and temporal context cells in macaque medial parietal cortex support temporal order memory.

Episodic memory involves encoding and remembering the order of events experienced over time. Previous work examining the mechanisms of temporal order memories has focused primarily on the hippocampus and prefrontal cortices, with comparatively less attention paid to population-level memory signals in the medial posterior parietal cortex (mPPC). Combining in vivo multi-unit electrophysiology and a temporal order judgment task with naturalistic cinematic material in macaques, we show that population activity in mPPC exhibits temporally structured dynamics during both encoding and retrieval. Childhood trauma and hippocampal-dependent memory across the psychosis spectrum: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although the processes underlying the relationship between developmental trauma and psychosis remain to be elucidated, alterations in hippocampal-dependent memory (HDM) processing may underlie this relationship. We hypothesized that exposure to developmental trauma would be negatively associated with HDM and hippocampal volume and positively associated with intrusive memories among people with psychosis. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of studies published from Dec. 18, 2020, to Nov. 14, 2023, using the search terms "childhood," "trauma," "psychosis," and "memory process

Dynamic neural representations of memory and space during human ambulatory navigation.

Our ability to recall memories of personal experiences is an essential part of daily life. These episodic memories often involve movement through space and thus require continuous encoding of one's position relative to the surrounding environment. The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is thought to be critically involved, based on studies in freely moving rodents and stationary humans. However, it remains unclear if and how the MTL represents both space and memory especially during physical navigation, given challenges associated with deep brain recordings in humans during movement. We recorded intra

Self-awareness in Transient Global Amnesia: distinguishing the effects of transient memory disorder vs. pre-existing vulnerability factors.

Numerous evidences suggest the existence of relationships between the impairment of episodic memory, acute stress exposure and variations in self-awareness (SA). Here, we examined 27 patients presenting transient global amnesia (TGA), a clinical condition which combines episodic amnesia and high anxiety, thanks to state and trait questionnaires of SA. We observed variation of SA depending on the stage of TGA (acute, recovery and follow-up). We also found preexisting differences in patient's awareness of their own image when the precipitating event was physical, encouraging us to give more cons

Memory dysfunctions.

Since the seminal work on the patient HM, who in his adulthood presented an acquired amnesic syndrome following the resection of the bilateral temporal lobe, other research has described several cases of isolated memory dysfunction in children. This chapter presents developmental and long-lasting memory disorders emerging from an organic or neurologic cause at birth or in infancy. More notably, we focus on developmental amnesic syndrome caused by neonatal bihippocampal damage and memory dysfunction caused by medial temporal developmental epilepsy. We describe these two pediatric populations an

Disruptions in autobiographical memory processing in depression and the emergence of memory therapeutics.

Depression is characterized by distinct profiles of disturbance in ways autobiographical memories are represented, recalled, and maintained. We review four core domains of difficulty: systematic biases in favor of negative material; impoverished access and responses to positive memories; reduced access to the specific details of the personal past; and dysfunctional processes of rumination and avoidance around personal autobiographical material. These difficulties drive the onset and maintenance of depression; consequently, interventions targeted at these maladaptive processes have clinical pot

Largely intact memory for spatial locations during navigation in an individual with dense amnesia.

Spatial navigation and event memory (termed episodic memory) are thought to be heavily intertwined, both in terms of their cognitive processes and underlying neural systems. Some theoretical models posit that both memory for places during navigation and episodic memory depend on highly overlapping brain systems. Here, we assessed this relationship by testing navigation in an individual with severe retrograde and anterograde amnesia; the amnesia stemmed from bilateral lesions in the medial temporal lobes from two separate strokes. The individual with amnesia and age-matched controls were tested

The Destiny of Multiple Domain Amnesic Mild Cognitive Impairment: Effect of Alternative Neuropsychological Definitions and Their Adjunctive Role in Respect of Memory Impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Mild cognitive impairment is the main risk factor of dementia. Previous evidence has claimed that subjects with memory disturbances associated with impairment of other cognitive domains (multiple domain amnesic MCI) are at the highest risk of developing dementia. To date, a shared definition of amnesic MCI multiple domain (aMCI-MD) is still lacking. METHOD: 163 subjects with aMCI were enrolled and followed-up for 2 years. They underwent a baseline comprehensive neuropsychological battery. The cut-off point for each test was set at 1, 1.5, and 2 SD below the mean obtained in normati

Autobiographical memory in Korsakoff syndrome: A review.

Autobiographical memory (AM) (i.e., memory for personal information) is a unique form of memory that goes beyond recalling information such as what, where and when of an event, to include what that event means and why it is important to our life story. This paper therefore reviews the available literature on AM in Korsakoff syndrome (KS). It summarizes the characteristics of AM disorders in KS patients. These disorders are mainly characterized by the difficulties that patients with KS have in retrieving and reliving specific AMs and in retrieving recent and remote memories. Another core charac

Autobiographical memory in mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease: a comparison between the Levine and Kopelman interview methodologies.

Previous studies have produced inconsistent results concerning the two components of autobiographical memory--personal semantic memory and episodic memory. Results in subjects with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT) have varied concerning the existence of a temporal gradient in retrograde amnesia. These results have important theoretical implications regarding multiple trace theory versus standard consolidation models of long-term memory (LTM). We investigated whether this variability arises from differences in the methods used in assessing autobiographical

Prefrontal tDCS fails to modulate memory retrieval in younger and older adults.

Previous research shows that a single session of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) can improve the accuracy of episodic memory retrieval, but stimulation effects are not always found and may be moderated by time of day. Here, we report the results from a rigorous clinical trial (NCT03723850) designed to replicate these tDCS findings in younger adults and extend them to cognitively normal older adults. We conducted the largest double-blind, between-subjects tDCS study on memory retrieval in younger and older adults to date.

Modulation of hippocampal theta oscillations via deep brain stimulation of the parietal cortex depends on cognitive state.

The angular gyrus (AG) and posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) demonstrate extensive structural and functional connectivity with the hippocampus and other core recollection network regions. Consequently, recent studies have explored neuromodulation targeting these and other regions as a potential strategy for restoring function in memory disorders such as Alzheimer's Disease. However, determining the optimal approach for neuromodulatory devices requires understanding how parameters like selected stimulation site, cognitive state during modulation, and stimulation duration influence the effects of

Reduced memory precision in older age is associated with functional and structural differences in the angular gyrus.

Decreased fidelity of mnemonic representations plays a critical role in age-related episodic memory deficits, yet the brain mechanisms underlying such reductions remain unclear. Using functional and structural neuroimaging, we examined how changes in two key nodes of the posterior-medial network, the hippocampus and the angular gyrus (AG), might underpin loss of memory precision in older age. Healthy young and older adults completed a memory task that involved reconstructing object features on a continuous scale. Investigation of blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) activity during retrieval re

Increasing autobiographical memory specificity: Using kindness meditation to impact features of memory retrieval.

Individuals with a history of depression have an increased risk for future episodes. This risk has been linked with impaired features of autobiographical memory retrieval that remain when depressive symptoms abate, including memory specificity, remoteness, valence, and vantage perspective. Rumination has been shown to influence these impairments and can be reduced via compassion training. We therefore investigated the effects of a self-compassion meditation on autobiographical memory retrieval in remitted depression. Baseline data were collected (n = 50) using an extended version of the Autobi
