Risk factors associated with depression in athletes include biological sex, physical pain, and history of sport-related concussion (SRC). However, although there are well-documented benefits of sport and physical activity on mental health, many sportspeople still take the risk of competing in contact sports. Therefore, this infographic, supported by scientific evidence, aims to provide sportspeople with an informed decision on their participation. This infographic can be used by sports clubs or governing bodies to illustrate the risk that SRC has on the mental health of sportspeople. Likewise,

Good physical and mental health is a prerequisite for anyone planning to scuba dive. A certificate of fitness to dive for those willing to enter a scuba diving course as well as for active divers, either amateur or occupational, can only be issued if there are no medical contraindications to dive. It is usually within the competence of a diving instructor, a manager of underwater work or a physician to assess a person's mental and physical health and grant them permission to stay under hyperbaric conditions. The legal requirements for issuing a certificate of fitness to dive are different for

Relations among self-reported social skills, teacher ratings of classroom behavior, and direct observations of social interactions among 87 adolescents with mild mental retardation were investigated and variables predicting the students' task orientation identified. Three information sources were employed. Results demonstrated that the four domains of social skills were related to the students' task orientation. The regression analysis revealed that students who were characterized by better social skills and fewer occurrences of hyperactivity and behavioral difficulties were viewed by teachers

Young-onset dementias frequently present with prominent behavioral features and constitute a diagnostic challenge. Most cases are secondary to neurodegenerative conditions, including the behavioral variant of frontotemporal dementia, which has overlapping symptoms with many primary psychiatric disorders. This article reviews the differential diagnosis and neuropsychiatric assessment of young-onset dementia, which includes detailed history taking, family history, mental status examination, office-based cognitive tests, and a focused neurologic examination. The clinical examination serves to est

General principles of managing chronic, age-associated diseases apply as much to Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other late-life dementing disorders as they do to congestive heart failure or osteoarthritis. Beyond efforts to maintain residual tissue or organ function, important physician roles include promoting general well-being and helping patients and their caregivers adjust to disease-related limitations. Physicians provide essential information to patients and their families about the disease, its social and legal ramifications, and community resources to facilitate care. Therefore, physicia

Especially regarding two respects, the psychiatric expert assessment differs from the expert assessment of other medical specialties: (1) No laboratory tests or technical equipment are available for the psychiatrist except for mental disturbances due to physical impacts such as brain injuries or intoxications. The psychiatrist depends on a carefully compiled case history and a differentiated psychodiagnostic. This may lead to a wrong assessment due to a lack of objectiveness. (2) There are a lot of legal areas where only the psychiatric or psychological expert opinion is required: i.e., the qu

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health problems represent a growing public health concern worldwide. Physical activity (PA) is a modifiable protective factor that supports emotional and social wellbeing, yet most research has emphasized the amount or intensity of activity rather than the context in which it occurs. Comparing structured settings (for example, PE, team sport, classroom programs, supervised dance/arts) and unstructured settings (for example, self-directed leisure, community, or nature-based opportunities) may help identify which forms of engagement best promote mental health and gu

BACKGROUND: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) proposes that satisfaction of the basic psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness promotes psychological growth and mental health. However, previous evidence syntheses have largely examined psychopathology or well-being separately. The present systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of SDT-based interventions on mental health while separately examining mental illness outcomes and positive mental health (psychological functioning) within Keyes' dual-continua framework.

High school students in the United States are being educated during an unprecedented time of social unrest, public health concerns, and gun violence. High school student athletes can be further challenged by sports-related stressors that may lead to anxiety, burnout, depression, disordered eating, sleep difficulty, performance-based identity concerns, and substance use. High school football players, in particular, are at higher risk of concussion, musculoskeletal injury, and may feel excess pressure to compete from coaches, parents, and peers. One way to address these stressors among high scho

This report concerns rape survivors with mental retardation referred by the courts for evaluation of their competencies to (i) provide testimony in court and (ii) consent to sexual intercourse. Being a relatively new area of work in South Africa, it seems important to document findings to (i) examine the challenges facing such rape survivors, (ii) inform quality improvement in this forensic mental health task, and (iii) inform and support advocacy programmes for this vulnerable group. Of 106 rape survivors referred by courts over a 3-yr. period, 91.5% were females, 21.7% were under 16 years of

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the proportion of psychiatric in-patients who lack capacity to make treatment decisions, or the associations of lack of capacity.
AIMS: To determine the prevalence of psychiatric in-patients who lack capacity to make decisions about current treatment and to identify demographic and clinical associations with lack of mental capacity.
METHOD: Patients (n=112) were interviewed soon after admission to hospital and a binary judgement of capacity was made, guided by the MacArthur Competence Tool for Treatment. Demographic and clinical information was collected fro

While clozapine represents a revolutionary advance in the treatment of schizophrenia, it carries with it a formidable side-effect profile. Agranulocytosis may indeed be life-threatening to a small number of patients. The nurse practitioner must be aware of this and other side effects in order to competently care for patients with psychiatric problems. It is also essential that there be a collaborative relationship between the nurse practitioner and a mental health provider. Only through appropriate consultation and referral will the needs of psychiatric patients be met in a timely and comprehe

Much of medical education focuses on the progression from novice to competent practitioner, yet less attention has been given to how senior clinicians continue to learn after core competence is established. This article argues that later stage development is less about acquiring additional knowledge and more about refining judgment, emotional regulation, perceptual sensitivity, feedback habits, and adaptability in rare or high stakes clinical situations. Drawing on literature on expertise, deliberate practice, self-calibration, and contextual performance, the article proposes that the continue

OBJECTIVES: We examined the attitude towards the importance of medical psychotherapy among physicians working in a hospital. We focused on their opinion about the general role of medical psychotherapy within the health care system as well as on their opinion about the importance of medical psychotherapy in different clinical situations.
METHOD: 105 physicians with various clinical specialties were interviewed using a questionnaire designed for this purpose.
RESULTS: From the point of view of the interviewed physicians, medical psychotherapy plays an important role. Especially medical psychot

INTRODUCTION: Homelessness presents significant public health challenges, contributing to higher rates of chronic illness, mental health conditions, and overutilization of emergency departments. This project implemented the Street Nursing 101 educational program to enhance nurses' competence and improve care for homeless patients in the emergency department.
METHODS: A quantitative approach, guided by the Iowa Model of Evidence-Based Practice, supported the implementation of an online training program centered on homelessness care. Nurse competence was assessed using the PROFFNurse SAS II, mo

Children with reading disabilities are at risk for emotional difficulties. There is some evidence that reading-disabled children with high socioeconomic status may be at risk of having low self-esteem. We conducted a preliminary study of the impact of reading disability on children's self-esteem and emotional health in a select group of mildly impaired reading disabled children with well-educated parents who were well informed about reading disabilities. We interviewed 28 healthy, preadolescent boys and girls with mean reading delay of 9.0 months and 39 comparable nonreading disabled children

The Center for Public Health Preparedness at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health is part of a national network of academic centers established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to strengthen links between public health practice and academe, especially for public health workforce development. Since its inception in Fall 2000, the Center has been working in partnership with the New York City Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) on planning and competency-based training in emergency preparedness (including bioterrorism and infectious diseases) and eval

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals show disproportionately high rates of mental distress relative to their cisgender, heterosexual peers resulting from minority stress, or unique identity-related stressors. The majority of research on minority stress and mental health in SGM individuals has focused on adults, a notable gap given that SGM youth face unique developmental factors that intersect with identity development and availability of support resources. SGM youth therefore represent a critical population for the mental health workforce to serve competently. Mental health providers

OBJECTIVES: Tobacco use increases morbidity and mortality among its users. The rate of tobacco use is declining in the general adult population yet is two to three times higher for those experiencing mental health disorders, specifically those with serious mental illness (SMI). Psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) are well-positioned to treat tobacco use in patients with SMI, yet tobacco training during nursing education, both in amount of time spent and content delivered, is not well understood and can leave PMHNPs ill-prepared to intervene.
METHODS: A cross-sectional descr
