Fifty-three patients were examined for dental abnormalities at an institution specializing in care of the mentally deficient in Bauru, São Paulo State. The incidence of teeth with abnormal morphology, mainly second molars with an abnormal number of cusps, was extremely high. Enamel hypoplasia was frequently found in anterior teeth, and the percentage of fractured maxillary incisors was significantly higher than that observed in normal individuals.

During a survey of a selected group of residents of an institution for the mentally retarded, four previously undescribed syndromes were found. They were characterized as follows: cerebral maldevelopment, dwarfism and cataracts (autosomal recessive inheritance); cerebral maldevelopment, dwarfism and facial osteoproliferation (autosomal recessive inheritance); cerebral maldevelopment and colobomata (autosomal recessive inheritance); and cerebral maldevelopment and acrocephaly (X-linked recessive inheritance).

The hereditary cases of microphthalmia in the mentally retarded are not all of the partially sex-linked type as has hitherto been stated. A survey is given of published cases of dominant, autosomal recessive and sex-linked recessive pedigrees with the coincidence of microphthalmia and mental retardation. The common misconception of Norrie's disease being regraded as microphthalmia or hereditary corneal dystrophy instead of phthisis is noted.
