An Investigation of Professional Integrity in Pre-registration Nurse Education: A Modified Grounded Theory Research Study.

BACKGROUND: Acting with integrity is a central part of nursing practice. However, literature shows that professional integrity can be absent and where this is present it can face challenges. Governmental Inquiries have revealed deficits in the expression of nursing values which underpin professional integrity, in particular caring, compassionate and competent practice that maintains the dignity of patients. Evidence also suggests that it cannot be taken for granted that pre-registration education will have a positive impact on student nurses' ability to practice with integrity. OBJECTIVES: Th

Overview and experience of a nursing e-mentorship program.

Little is known regarding the feasibility and efficacy of an online continuing education program for oncology nurses. The Multiple Myeloma Mentorship Program, a quality improvement project for the Institute for Medical Education and Research, was designed to meet the educational needs of oncology nurses caring for patients with multiple myeloma. Twenty-five expert nurses with expertise in multiple myeloma from 23 cancer centers in the United States partnered with 50 oncology nurses in an electronic format from July 2009 to January 2010. Coaching Influence, Communication, and Accountability: Developing Leadership Behaviors in Every Nurse.

Coaching is a powerful strategy for developing leadership behaviors in nurses. Contact dermatitis and workforce economics.

The roots of education in patch testing begin with Jadassohn and have been passed down through generations of dermatologists through didactic teachings and mentoring. Currently, we are faced with workforce economics tipping the balance of dermatology toward cosmetic and surgical practices. This imbalance is easily found in the subspecialty of contact dermatitis, where the current demand for patch test services is on the rise and the number of new dermatology-based patch test providers cannot keep up with the current demand. Steps are being made to remedy this discrepancy through societies and …

"Quality teaches you how to use water. It doesn't provide a water pump": a qualitative study of context and mechanisms of action in an Ethiopian quality improvement program.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement collaboratives are a common approach to bridging the quality-of-care gap, but little is known about implementation in low-income settings. Implementers rarely consider mechanisms of change or the role of context, which may explain collaboratives' varied impacts. METHODS: To understand mechanisms and contextual influences we conducted 55 in-depth interviews with staff from four health centres and two hospitals involved in quality improvement collaboratives in Ethiopia. We also generated control charts for selected indicators to explore any impacts of the collabo

A Team-Based Approach to Introduce and Sustain the Use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in Tanzania.

INTRODUCTION: Millions of patients worldwide suffer disability and death due to complications related to surgery. Many of these complications can be reduced by the use of the World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC), a simple tool that can enhance teamwork and communication and improve patient safety. Despite the evidence on benefits of its use, introducing and sustaining the use of the checklist are challenging. We present a team-based approach employed in a low-resource setting in Tanzania, which resulted in high checklist utilization and compliance rates. METHODS: We

Words Matter: The Language of Leadership in Nursing Professional Development.

Every day, nursing professional development specialists shape culture through hundreds of conversations. They welcome new graduate nurses, coach experienced clinicians, facilitate difficult debriefings, mentor emerging leaders, and provide reassurance during moments of uncertainty. Although these conversations may seem routine, each represents a leadership intervention. Every word has the potential to build confidence, strengthen trust, encourage learning, or unintentionally diminish it.
