In a prospective study of the measurement of osteoporosis in patients with fracture of the femoral neck, we compared a histological with a radiological method. We found no significant correlation between histological planimetry and the radiological six metacarpal hand index in patients with either cervical or trochanteric fractures. This demonstrates that metacarpal morphometry cannot predict histological osteoporosis of the iliac crest.

Providing adequate protection is a very important component of proper treatment of athletic injuries of the upper extremity. This article reviews the anatomic considerations involved in fabricating splints for various joints of the hand and wrist that will allow the athlete to compete as early as possible while preventing reinjury or permanent disability.

Step-by-step distraction of the metacarpal I according to Matev in traumatic loss of the thumb is demonstrated in a modified form with interposition of a corticospongious bone chip. Subsequently, the article reports on the use of this method in congenital malformations of the hand on the basis of three different examples.--Firstly, monodactyly with extension of a second metacarpal as passive counter-support,--Secondly, symbrachydactyly with rudimentary metacarpal rests I to V with extension of I and then of III and IV, followed by subtotal resection of the second metacarpal stump and phalangis

85 adults of both sexes, suffering from variety of bone disorders were studied by means of humeral radiodensitometry and histomorphometric analysis of iliac bone biopsies. Trabecular bone volume (TBV) was not related to cortical thickness. Bone mineral density was related to iliac TBV only in female subjects. The value of these measures is limited in osteoporosis because of measurement errors and skeletal inhomogeneity. In osteoporosis, variable histomorphometric features were observed. However, radiodensitometry proved a good measure of the state of mineralization in osteomalacia.

A complex malformation of the first and second branchial arches and of the first branchial cleft is described; there was also involvement of the axial skeleton and the limbs. The syndrome has been described by us as dysostosis temporo-sphenofacialis and could not be classified with any previously described entity. The reason for this was due to the imcomplete description of previously published cases, but also the large number of possible combinations of changes in various organs which can occur. In order to understand the condition more clearly, the aetiology and pathogenesis of abnormalities

Hand injuries with multiple metacarpal involvements often include midpalmar muscle, extensor tendon, and skin defects. Reconstruction method is decided according to the type and amount of structures to be restored. Bone reconstruction and resurfacing of the skin is regarded as priority, and restoration of tendon function and joint mobility can be left for further procedures. An ideal flap for such defects should provide bone for multiple metacarpal defects and a large enough skin paddle. Such flaps are few, and one of the most suitable of them all is the free fibular osteoseptocutaneous flap (

In this paper, we report on the anatomical study of 34 cadaveric forearms with red latex injection and the clinical application of this study to 11 cases of microsurgical second dorsal metacarpal artery (SDMA) flaps. There were 8 cutaneous cases and 3 tenocutaneous cases using SDMA flaps for distal finger reconstruction. The SDMA was classified into 2 types and 4 subtypes according to its anatomical origin and course. Type I (76.5%) originated from the dorsal branch of the radial artery at the snuffbox. Type II (23.5%) originated from the perforating branch of the deep palmar arch at the bases

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to review our experience with a benign surface bone lesion referred to as bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) or Nora's lesion, named for the pathologist who described it in 1983. The lesion may be confused with a variety of tumors, particularly solitary osteochondromas, which are rare.
METHODS: The files in the Department of Pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases were reviewed over a 21-year period for all surface bone lesions involving the tubular bones in the hand. There were a total of 10 cases of BPOP compared with only a

Patients with common hand fractures are likely to present in a wide variety of outpatient orthopedic practices. Successful rehabilitation of hand fractures addresses the need to (1) maintain fracture stability for bone healing, (2) introduce soft tissue mobilization for soft tissue integrity, and (3) remodel any restrictive scar from injury or surgery. It is important to recognize the intimate relationship of these 3 tissues (bone, soft tissue, and scar) when treating hand fractures. Fracture terminology precisely defines fracture type, location, and management strategy for hand fractures. The
