In addition to the primary components of alloys, approximately 5% of the formulation may contain other metals, including lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), arsenic, manganese (Mn), iron, phosphorus, and nickel. Workers in the foundries are exposed to several compounds; therefore, it is important to assess the levels of injury that may reflect an additive, synergistic, or antagonistic effect caused by these compounds. The mean values of the environmental evaluation of the facilities range from 16.65 to 40.31 µg m(-3) for Pb, 0.99 to 1.73 µg m(-3) for Cd, and 0.91 to 1.70 µg m(-3) for Mn. The mean values

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a prevalent cumulative strain injury associated with occupational risk factors such as vibration, repetitive and forceful wrist movements, and awkward wrist postures. This study aimed to identify Ontario workers at elevated risk for CTS and to explore sex differences in CTS risk among workers.
METHODS: The Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) links accepted lost time compensation claims to health administrative databases. CTS cases were identified from physician billing (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) records and defined as at least one r

BACKGROUND: Associations between sarcoidosis or sarcoid-like granulomatous lung disease and exposure to silica and other inorganic agents have been suggested in several studies.
CASES: We describe granulomatous lung disease in two workers of a small production unit making metal-halide lamps. Initially, both were diagnosed with sarcoidosis. However, in both men, birefringent particles were observed in the lung or mediastinal lymph node biopsies. Clipping of glass tubes led to moderate exposure to dust, consisting mainly of amorphous fused silica, with some cristobalite. After removal from expo

In the construction sector, overhead drilling into concrete or metal ceilings is a strenuous task associated with shoulder, neck and back musculoskeletal disorders due to the large applied forces and awkward arm postures. Two intervention devices, an inverted drill press and a foot lever design, were developed then compared to the usual method by construction workers performing their normal overhead drilling activities (n = 14). While the intervention devices were rated as less fatiguing than the usual method, their ratings on usability measures were worse than the usual method. The study demo

The occupational hazards and respiratory problems of workers associated with the chromium related industries like mining, electroplating and tanning have received much focus. Although the cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of common chromium(VI) compounds are now established, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of apoptosis (programmed cell death) caused by a set of Cr(III) complexes in human lymphocyte cells. The effects of five Cr(III) complexes with differing ligand environment and structure as well as K2Cr2O7 on Phytohaemagglutinin (PHA) induced lymphocyte cell proliferatio

Cadmium is an inessential trace metal which accumulates in human tissues from contamination of food, water or air. The kidney is the critical organ following long-term, low-level absorption either by inhalation or ingestion; accumulation occurring in tubular epithelium in the form of a cadmium-metallothionein complex, giving rise to tubular dysfunction. In a group of 12 cadmium workers some of whom were followed for up to 16 years, tubular proteinuria, renal glycosuria, aminoaciduria, hypercalciuria and defects of concentration and acidification have been observed. Two men became recurrent ren

Background/Objectives: Nutritional intake plays an important role in modulating lead absorption and toxicity. In addition to micronutrient status, emerging evidence suggests that body fat distribution may influence heavy metal toxicokinetics, yet this aspect remains poorly explored in occupational settings. This study aimed to investigate the associations of dietary intake of zinc, calcium, vitamin D, and protein, as well as anthropometric indicators, with blood lead levels (BLLs) among lead-exposed male workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 144 male workers from fi

BACKGROUND: Metalworkers are exposed to a variety of contact allergens by handling tools, metals, metalworking fluids (MWFs), oils and greases, rubber materials, and so on. Most large-scale reports on contact allergy due to MWFs are more than 10-years-old, and there are only few studies on contact allergy in mechanics and other metal workers not exposed to MWFs.
OBJECTIVES: To describe a current spectrum of contact sensitization in metalworkers with occupational dermatitis (OD).

BACKGROUND: Informal sector electronic waste (e-waste) recovery produces toxic emissions resulting from burning e-waste to recover valuable metals.
OBJECTIVES: To identify high-risk worker groups by measuring relative levels of personal inhalation exposure to particulate matter (PM) of fine (≤2.5 µm) and coarse (2.5-10 µm) fractions (PM2.5 and PM2.5-10, respectively) across work activities among e-waste workers, and to assess how wind conditions modify levels of PM by activity and site location.
METHODS: At the Agbogbloshie e-waste site, 170 partial-shift PM samples and time-activity data we

OBJECTIVES: Numerous epidemiological studies of lung cancer among textile workers worldwide consistently indicate reduced risks related to cotton dust exposure, presumably due to endotoxin contamination. Our objective was to investigate associations with other exposures potentially related to lung cancer, including wool and synthetic fibre dusts, formaldehyde, silica, dyes and metals, that have only been studied to a limited extent in the textile industry.
METHODS: We conducted a case-cohort study nested within a cohort of 267,400 women textile workers in Shanghai, China. We compared work ass

The effect of industrial chemicals on the sensory perception of exposed workers has received scant attention from the medical community to date, and the scientific literature is mainly limited to some case-reports or isolated studies. Possible explanations for this include the complexity of sensory perception, and the lack of agreement among researchers on methods for testing large groups of subjects. Nevertheless, some published studies showed that vision, hearing and olfactory function can be affected by various industrial metals and solvents, and some data exist also for touch and taste. Th

Ototoxicity of styrene and the synergistic action of styrene and noise have been shown in rats. The respective data in humans are scarce and equivocal. This study evaluated the effects of occupational exposure to styrene and combined exposures to styrene and noise on hearing. The study group, comprised of 290-yacht yard and plastic factory workers, was exposed to a mixture of organic solvents, having styrene as its main compound. The reference group, totaling 223 subjects, included (1) white-collar workers, exposed neither to solvents nor noise and (2) metal factory workers, exposed exclusivel

The aim of this study was to investigate the exposure of Danish workers to trichloroethylene (TCE) and the factors that affected such exposure. Data from Danish health authorities were evaluated for use in an epidemiological study of possible adverse health effects of TCE. The paper files relating to 1,075 air measurements taken between 1947 and 1989 at 150 companies were examined to extract information about calendar year, company, industry, type of measurement, and worker. Multiple regression models were used to analyze the effects of various factors on the concentration of TCE. TCE concentr

The objective of this study was to identify the association of blood lead level (BLL) with mortality in inorganic lead-exposed workers of South Korea. A cohort was compiled comprising 81,067 inorganic lead exposed workers working between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2004. This cohort was merged with the Korean National Statistical Office to follow-up for mortality between 2000 and 2008. After adjusting for age and other carcinogenic metal exposure, all-cause mortality (Relative risk [RR] 1.36, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-1.79), digestive disease (RR 3.23, 95% CI 1.33-7.86), and inte

PURPOSE: Industrial workers are frequently exposed to noise and the noise can cause hearing loss. The relationship between vestibular abnormalities and long-term exposure to occupational noise has been reported. The aim of this study was to use vHIT (video head impulse test) to evaluate the semicircular canal's function in industrial workers with noise-induced hearing loss.
METHODS: In the present study, we included 36 male patients (aged 28-55 years, mean 44.4 ± 6.1 years) with hearing loss due to noise exposure from working in the steel and metal industry for at least 4 years, and a control

To assess the clinical significance of asbestos-induced pleural fibrosis, we evaluated the relationship between radiographic evidence of pleural fibrosis and spirometric values in 1,211 sheet metal workers. Of those with pleural fibrosis (n = 334), 78% had circumscribed plaques and 22% had diffuse pleural thickening involving the costophrenic angle. Factors that were found to be associated with the presence and type of pleural fibrosis included increased age (p less than 0.001), more years in the trade (p less than 0.0001), more years since first exposure to asbestos (p less than 0.0001), more…

Occupational surveillance systems, which examine mortality patterns by occupation or industry, may contribute to hypothesis generation and priority setting for occupational cancer research and control. In the City of Torino the Local Population and Family Register records and the Census records are matchable through a computerized record linkage procedure. Since the early 1980's we have incorporated demographic events, occurring among residents, into the Census data source, covering birth, death and migration. This paper deals with the occupational mortality, from 1981 to 1985, of 262, 314 men

The US electronics recycling industry has introduced a novel mobile electronic waste (e-waste) shredding truck service to address increasing needs for secure data destruction of e-waste. These trucks can shred small electronics with data security concerns at remote locations for a wide variety of clients. Shredding jobs usually involve hand-feeding electronic waste (e-waste) for 4-10 h day-1, 1-5 days. Shredding of e-waste has been documented as a source of high metal exposures, especially lead and cadmium. However, no studies have been done to assess exposures on mobile e-waste shredding truc

A monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) may develop into a multiple myeloma or a correlated lymphoproliferative malignancy with a progress rate of 1% per year. The immune status, occupational-environmental risk factors, and hereditary factors may influence the risk of developing MGUS. We investigated the prevalence of MGUS in 77 refinery waste workers. They were all males, averagely aged 36, with a mean working history of 18.5 years and working in the dump for about 4.2 years. After analyzing the results of standard serum electrophoresis migrations, 16% of cases (n = 12) sh

Honey bees are important plant pollinators and honey producers. Contamination of the environment with metals can lead to a decline in honey bee populations. Copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) salts are commonly used as fungicides and foliar fertilizers. In this study, we investigated the effects of 10-day chronic oral exposure to different concentrations of Cu (CuSO4) and Zn (ZnCl2) on survival and feeding rates of Carniolan honey bees in laboratory conditions. We found that mortality in honey bee workers increased in a concentration-dependent manner and that Cu (lethal concentration [LC50] = 66 mg/l)
