Large band curvature in semimetal-semiconductor NbSe2/WSe2 heterojunctions for high-speed imaging.

High-speed imaging relies on tunable interfacial band bending for carrier separation and collection almost instantaneously, which can be severely affected by finite barrier heights and Fermi-level pinning. Here, we report a large-curvature van der Waals heterojunction (LCVH) formed by the two-dimensional (2D) semimetal 2H-NbSe2 and 2D semiconductor WSe2, featuring a steep band structure. The interfacial barrier is increased by the semimetal's high work function, while Fermi-level pinning is weakened by its low interface-state density, enabling effective control of band bending. With this inter

Multimodal electron microscopy of halide perovskite interfacial dynamics.

Halide perovskite light-emitting diodes promise high-efficiency1-3, low-cost optoelectronics, yet their operational instability remains a critical barrier to practical deployment. Here we develop a multimodal in situ electron microscopy approach that integrates four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and atomic-resolution imaging to directly visualize structural and chemical evolution in a working halide perovskite light-emitting diode with nanometre precision. Our in situ biasing measurements uncover nanoscale structural and chemical tr

Room Temperature Photodriven Ru(II)-Tripyridine Supramolecular Photosensitizer Synergistically Catalyzes Carbon Dioxide Cycloaddition with Metal Nanoclusters.

Photocatalytic CO2 cycloaddition under mild conditions is of great significance for achieving renewable carbon resource recycling and environmental protection. To enhance the efficiency of this light-driven conversion process, this study constructed an efficient photocatalytic system composed of a photosensitizer and a metal nanocluster catalyst via a coordination bond strategy. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory confirmed the successful formation of coordination bonds. With the help of coordination bonds, the light absorption capaci

Zinc-Porphyrin Terephthalate-Based Metal-Organic Framework: Structural Insights and Functional Antibacterial Properties.

Herein, we have synthesized the commonly known protonated 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrin (compound 1) and a mixed-linker zinc-based metal-organic framework (compound 2) and evaluated their antibacterial photodynamic therapy. The crystal structure of 1 exhibits hydrogen-bonded scaffolds and engages in π-stacking interactions, whereas compound 2 is coordinated through zinc metal nodes to porphyrin and terephthalate ions, forming an interpenetrated 3D framework with a mog topology. In 2, we observed a high theoretical surface area of 2915 m2 g-1 calculated using a N2 apparatus. Molecular

Silicon-tapered waveguide for mode conversion in metal-insulator-metal waveguide-based plasmonic sensor for refractive index sensing.

In this study, we have undertaken a comprehensive numerical investigation of a refractive index sensor designed around a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) plasmonic waveguide. Our approach utilizes the finite element method to thoroughly analyze the sensor's performance. The sensor's configuration utilizes a ring resonator design, which has been slightly modified at the coupling segment. This modification enhances the efficiency of light coupling between a bus waveguide and the ring resonator, particularly at the resonance wavelength. This strategic adjustment significantly improves the device's ext

Halides and oxyhalides-based photocatalysts for abatement of organic water contaminants - An overview.

Recently, halides (silver halides, AgX; perosvkite halides, ABX3) and oxyhalides (bismuth oxyhalides, BiOX) based nanomaterials are noticeable photocatalysts in the degradation of organic water pollutants. Therefore, we review the recent reports to explore improvement strategies adopted in AgX, ABX3 and BiOX (X = Cl, Br and I)-based photocatalysts in water pollution remediation. Herein, the photocatalytic degradation performances of each type of these photocatalysts were discussed. Strategies such as tailoring the morphology, crystallographic facet exposure, surface area, band structure, and c

Atomically precise nanoclusters of coinage metals for photothermal energy conversion: recent progress and biomedical applications.

Atomically precise nanoclusters (APNCs) of metals have emerged as a unique class of nanomaterials that bridge the gap between molecular complexes and metallic nanoparticles. Their precisely defined atomic structures, tunable electronic states, ultrasmall dimensions (<3 nm), and strong optical absorption spanning the visible to near-infrared (NIR) regions (NIR-I: 700-1000 nm, and NIR-II: 1000-2500 nm) have attracted significant attention. Owing to their discrete electronic structures, APNCs exhibit highly tunable excited-state dynamics and luminescence ranging from visible to NIR-II. Apart from

Ultrathin, high-efficiency, broad-band, omni-acceptance, organic solar cells enhanced by plasmonic cavity with subwavelength hole array.

Three of central challenges in solar cells are high light coupling into solar cell, high light trapping and absorption in a sub-absorption-length-thick active layer, and replacement of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO) transparent electrode used in thin-film devices. Here, we report a proposal and the first experimental study and demonstration of a new ultra-thin high-efficiency organic solar cell (SC), termed "plasmonic cavity with subwavelength hole-array (PlaCSH) solar cell", that offers a solution to all three issues with unprecedented performances. The ultrathin PlaCSH-SC is a thin plasmonic cav

Photocatalytic Approach to Decarboxylative Amidation of Aryl Glyoxylic Acids with Hydrazines.

A photocatalytic decarboxylative amidation methodology turns out to be a straightforward, sustainable, effective, mild, and metal-free protocol for the synthesis of amides. Here, we report a metal-free, environmentally friendly approach to the synthesis of amides via decarboxylative amidation of eco-friendly aryl glyoxylic acids with readily available hydrazines through C-N coupling using eosin Y as a photocatalyst, a CH3CN/H2O mixture as a green solvent, visible light as a renewable energy source, and air as an oxidant. More importantly, this approach exhibits a broad substrate scope, enablin

Photocatalytic synthesis of sulfonamidylated chroman-4-ones: metal- and oxidant-free radical addition-cyclization.

A metal- and oxidant-free photocatalytic cascade reaction has been developed for the divergent synthesis of sulfonamidylated chroman-4-ones. This visible-light-driven protocol employs readily available o-(allyloxy)arylaldehydes and N-sulfonylaminopyridinium salts as feedstocks. A sulfonamidyl radical-triggered addition-cyclization sequence enables the one-step assembly of a new heterocyclic ring with the concomitant formation of C-N and C-C bonds. The mild conditions afford the desired products in moderate to good yields, obviating the need for noble-metal catalysts or external oxidants. This

Ultrafast-light driven plasmonic inactivation of S. epidermidis: mechanistic insights.

Biofilm infections and antimicrobial resistance are growing problems that necessitate alternative strategies to supplement or replace antibiotic drugs. Plasmonic antimicrobials utilize localized thermal, chemical and photophysical responses to the optical excitation of localized plasmons in noble metal nanostructures for microbial inactivation. High fluence femtosecond pulsed laser excitation of noble metal nanoparticles allows for highly non-linear physics and gives rise to a wide range of physico-chemical phenomena, such as plasma, reactive oxygen species generation, and nanocavitation, whic

Photosensitive Oxidase Mimics for Spontaneous and Sustainable Pathogen Disinfection in Personal Protective Equipment.

The development of personal protective equipment (PPE) is essential to control the spread of infectious diseases. However, traditional PPE has significant drawbacks, such as a lack of antibacterial capacity and nonreusability, which may result in direct or indirect secondary infections. Herein, we propose an octahedral (Fe-O6) Fe-gallate (Fe-GA) metal-organic framework nanozyme with light-enhanced oxidase-like (OXD-like) activity and extend the use onto nonwoven fabric (Fe-GA/NWF) by hot pressing. Specifically, visible-light-mediated carrier migration and the activity of the OXD-like species s

Virus-Sized Gold Nanorods: Plasmonic Particles for Biology.

Plasmons, collective oscillations of conduction-band electrons in nanoscale metals, are well-known phenomena in colloidal gold and silver nanocrystals that produce brilliant visible colors in these materials that depend on the nanocrystal size and shape. Under illumination at or near the plasmon bands, gold and silver nanocrystals exhibit properties that enable fascinating biological applications: (i) the nanocrystals elastically scatter light, providing a straightforward way to image them in complex aqueous environments; (ii) the nanocrystals produce local electric fields that enable various

Simultaneous hyperaccumulation of multiple heavy metals by Helianthus annuus grown in a contaminated sandy-loam soil.

Phytoremediation is a promising means for the treatment of contamination arising from heavy metal spills. Although several species have been identified as hyperaccumulators, most of the studies were performed with only one heavy metal. Experiments were conducted with two cultivars of H. annuus exposed to different combinations of metal contamination (30 mg/kg Cd, Cr, Ni, As, and/or Fe). Cultivar efficiency was based on total metal uptake, as well as translocation and selectivity of each metal. The results for each cultivar were also compared after 0.1 g/kg or 0.3 g/kg EDTA was added to enhance

Tau Pathology, Metal Dyshomeostasis and Repetitive Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: An Unexplored Link Paving the Way for Neurodegeneration.

Repetitive mild traumatic brain injury (r-mTBI), commonly experienced by athletes and military personnel, causes changes in multiple intracellular pathways, one of which involves the tau protein. Tau phosphorylation plays a role in several neurodegenerative conditions including chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder linked to repeated head trauma. There is now mounting evidence suggesting that tau phosphorylation may be regulated by metal ions (such as iron, zinc and copper), which themselves are implicated in aging and neurodegenerative disorders such

Improved Refractive Index-Sensing Performance of Multimode Fano-Resonance-Based Metal-Insulator-Metal Nanostructures.

This work proposed a multiple mode Fano resonance-based refractive index sensor with high sensitivity that is a rarely investigated structure. The designed device consists of a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide with two rectangular stubs side-coupled with an elliptical resonator embedded with an air path in the resonator and several metal defects set in the bus waveguide. We systematically studied three types of sensor structures employing the finite element method. Results show that the surface plasmon mode's splitting is affected by the geometry of the sensor. We found that the transmitt
