Non-chromatographic mercury speciation and determination in wine by new core-shell ion-imprinted sorbents.

In this study new Hg(II) core-shell imprinted sorbents (Hg(II)-IIPs) were prepared and tested for speciation and determination of Hg in wine. The silica gel, chemically modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (TSPM) was used as supporting material. The Hg(II)-imprinted polymer layer was grafted by copolymerization of methacrylic acid and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate in the presence of Hg(II) complexes with two different chelating agents: 1-pyrrolidinedithiocarboxylic acid (P(PDC-Hg)/SiG) and 1-(2-thiazolylazo)-2-naphthol (P(TAN-Hg)/SiG). High selectivity and fast kinetics of

Autometallographic mercury correlates with degenerative changes in dorsal root ganglia of rats intoxicated with organic mercury.

Organic mercury intoxication in rats produces degenerative changes in the dorsal root ganglia and dorsal nerve roots. In a previous study of rats treated with organic mercury (2 mg/kg ) for 19 days, significant losses of ganglion cells (especially A-cells) and myelinated axons were observed in dorsal nerve roots and there was qualitative evidence of glial cell proliferation and the formation of Nageotte bodies (1). In the present study, the autometallographic silver-enhancement technique, for tracing inorganic mercury bound to sulphide or selenide (AMG-Hg), was applied to tissue sections of do

Determination of methyl-, ethyl-, phenyl and total mercury in Neckar River fish.

Methyl-, ethyl- and phenyl mercury, total mercury and fat content were determined in fish fillet of the five different fish species: eel, perch, roach, chub and barbel. The organo mercury compounds were extracted according to a modified Westöö method and determined by using HPLC-cold vapour atomic absorption spectrometrie. Total mercury was determined according to EPA/AOAC. Total mercury in fish tissue varied between 16 and 812 micrograms/kg, methyl mercury between 10 and 770 micrograms/kg. It was found that at least 83% of total mercury is present as methyl mercury. Only a barbel exceeded the

Confining Engineered FeS Nanoparticles in Mesoporous Silica for Enhancing Mercury Sequestration and Methylation Suppression.

Addressing mercury (Hg) contamination is an urgent priority due to its severe threats to human health. However, conventional approaches pose risks of generating highly toxic methylmercury (MeHg), highlighting the need for advanced strategies to reduce Hg bioavailability in remediation. To address this challenge, we developed a nanoconfinement strategy utilizing mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as carriers to anchor highly dispersed mackinawite (FeS) nanoparticles within the pores for Hg(II) immobilization. Compared to FeS synthesized via homogeneous coprecipitation, the synthesized nanoc

Specifically and Visually Detect Methyl-Mercury and Ethyl-Mercury in Fish Sample Based on DNA-Templated Alloy Ag-Au Nanoparticles.

Methyl-mercury (CH3Hg+) and ethyl-mercury (C2H5Hg+) have much higher toxicity than Hg2+ and can be more easily accumulated by organisms to form severe bioamplification. Hence, the specific and on-site detection of CH3Hg+ and C2H5Hg+ in seafood is of great significance and a hard challenge. We herein designed two T-rich aptamers (HT5 and HT7) for specifically recognizing CH3Hg+ and the total of CH3Hg+ and C2H5Hg+, respectively. In the presence of all Au3+, Ag+, and T-rich aptamer, CH3Hg+ and C2H5Hg+ specifically and preferentially bind with aptamer and thus induced the formation of alloy Ag-Au

Distribution of mercury and selenium in blood compartments of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from Sarasota Bay, Florida.

Total mercury and selenium concentrations ([THg], [Se]) in serum, plasma, whole blood, and packed cells were examined in a resident population of free-ranging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from Sarasota Bay, Florida, USA. The authors determined how these elements partition in blood and assess compartment-specific associations. Determining the distribution of Se and THg can provide physiologic insight into potential association of Hg with selenol-containing biomolecules (e.g., antioxidants) in blood compartments. Concentrations of THg were ranked serum < plasma < whole blood < packed

Cinnabar is not converted into methylmercury by human intestinal bacteria.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cinnabar (Cin), a naturally occurring mercuric sulfide (HgS), is a mineral widely used in traditional Chinese medicine throughout history. As for the toxicity of cinnabar, one important assumption is that cinnabar may be transformed into highly toxic methylmercury by gastrointestinal flora. There is no evidence in humans to support this assumption. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the biotransformation of cinnabar (HgS) in the human intestinal bacteria with modern analytical techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A gas chromatograph, equipped with electron capture

Mercury in traditional medicines: is cinnabar toxicologically similar to common mercurials?

Mercury is a major toxic metal ranked top in the Toxic Substances List. Cinnabar, which contains mercury sulfide, has been used in Chinese traditional medicines for thousands of years as an ingredient in various remedies, and 40 cinnabar-containing traditional medicines are still used today. Little is known about toxicology profiles or toxicokinetics of cinnabar and cinnabar-containing traditional medicines, and the high mercury content in these Chinese medicines raises justifiably escalations of public concern. This minireview, by searching the available database of cinnabar and by comparing

Influences of different selenium species on the uptake and assimilation of Hg(II) and methylmercury by diatoms and green mussels.

We examined the influences of different concentrations and species of Se (selenite, selenate, and seleno-l-methionine) in the ambient environment on the accumulation of inorganic Hg(II) and methylmercury (MeHg) by the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and the green mussel Perna viridis. At the experimental concentrations tested (< 500 microgl(-1)), selenite and selenate did not significantly affect the uptake of either mercury species by the diatoms and the green mussels. The assimilation efficiency of Hg(II) and MeHg by the mussels from ingested diatoms was also independent of the inorganic Se

Degradation of methyl and ethyl mercury into inorganic mercury by other reactive oxygen species besides hydroxyl radical.

Degradation of methyl mercury (MeHg) and ethyl Hg (EtHg) with reactive oxygens was studied in vitro by using peroxidase-hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-halide and rose bengal-ultraviolet light A systems. For this purpose, the direct determination method for inorganic Hg was employed. Both systems could effectively degrade EtHg, and MeHg to some extent. Degradation of MeHg and EtHg with the myeloperoxidase (MPO)-H2O2-chloride system was inhibited by MPO inhibitors (cyanide and azide), catalase, hypochlorous acid (HOCI) scavengers (glycine, alanine, serine and taurine), 1,4-diazabicyclo[2,2,2]octane an

[Mercury as a Global Pollutant and Mercury Exposure Assessment and Health Effects].

Mercury and its compounds are classified into three main groups: metallic mercury (Hg0), inorganic mercury (Hg2+), and organic mercury (methyl mercury: CH3Hg+, etc.). Metallic mercury is the only metal that is liquid at ambient temperature and normal pressure, which readily forms an amalgam with other metals. Therefore, mercury has long been used for refining various metals, and mercury amalgam has been used for dental treatment. Mercury has also been used in measuring instruments such as thermometers, barometers and blood pressure monitors, as well as electric appliances such as lighting equi

Investigating the adduct formation of organic mercury species with carbonic anhydrase and hemoglobin from human red blood cell hemolysate by means of LC/ESI-TOF-MS and LC/ICP-MS.

The interaction of mercury species with human erythrocytes is studied to investigate possible high molecular binding partners for mercury species. Human blood hemolysate was spiked with methylmercury and investigated by means of liquid chromatography (LC) coupled to electrospray ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (ESI-ToF-MS) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Beside adduct formation of mercury species with hemoglobin, the main compound of the erythrocytes, mercury binding to the enzyme carbonic anhydrase was revealed. Due to an enzymatic digest of the protein-

Aqueous Coriandrum sativum L. extract promotes neuroprotection against motor changes and oxidative damage in rat progeny after maternal exposure to methylmercury.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of Coriandrum sativum aqueous extract (CSAE) on the rat progeny of mothers exposed to methylmercury (MeHg). The presence of bioactive compounds and CSAE's antioxidant capacity been evaluated, and the offspring were assessed for their total mercury levels, motor behavioral parameters and oxidative stress in the cerebellum. The analysis of the bioactive compounds revealed significant amounts of polyphenols, flavonoids, and anthocyanins, as well as a variety of minerals. A DPPH test showed the CSAE had important antioxidant activity. The MeHg + CSAE gro

The toxicology of mercury and its chemical compounds.

This review covers the toxicology of mercury and its compounds. Special attention is paid to those forms of mercury of current public health concern. Human exposure to the vapor of metallic mercury dates back to antiquity but continues today in occupational settings and from dental amalgam. Health risks from methylmercury in edible tissues of fish have been the subject of several large epidemiological investigations and continue to be the subject of intense debate. Ethylmercury in the form of a preservative, thimerosal, added to certain vaccines, is the most recent form of mercury that has bec

Fingerprinting of neurotoxic compounds using a mouse embryonic stem cell dual luminescence reporter assay.

Identification of neurotoxic drugs and environmental chemicals is an important challenge. However, only few tools to address this topic are available. The aim of this study was to develop a neurotoxicity/developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) test system, using the pluripotent mouse embryonic stem cell line CGR8 (ESCs). The test system uses ESCs at two differentiation stages: undifferentiated ESCs and ESC-derived neurons. Under each condition, concentration-response curves were obtained for three parameters: activity of the tubulin alpha 1 promoter (typically activated in early neurons), activity o

Foliar application of inorganic fertilizers mitigates mercury and methylmercury accumulation in dryland Crops: A plant-soil-microorganism synergistic regulation.

Foliar application technology has received considerable research attention due to its potential to mitigate the accumulation of heavy metals such as cadmium and lead in crops. However, to date, there are very few inorganic foliar sprays reported to be capable of reducing mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in plants. In this study, common inorganic foliar sprays such as ZnSO4, Na2S, Na2SeO3, and MnCl2 were screened, among which ZnSO4 was confirmed to be the most effective in reducing Hg (32 %-72 %) and MeHg content (43 %-75 %) in various dryland plants (Lettuce, Chili, Maize and Bok choy). Microbial diversity regulates mercury cycling in paddy soils.

Microbial mercury (Hg) methylation and methylmercury (MeHg) demethylation critically govern MeHg production in paddy soils and its accumulation in rice. However, how the decline in microbial diversity under climate change affects these processes remains unclear. Here, we combined stable isotope tracing with a dilution-to-extinction approach to manipulate microbial diversity across paddy soils with Hg contamination gradient (HX: 165 ng/g, GX: 20,707 ng/g and SK: 659,303 ng/g), investigating its effects on Hg methylation and demethylation. Results showed that diversity loss suppressed methylatio

Preservation artifacts in zebrafish X-ray fluorescence imaging.

Preservation and embedding procedures can substantially influence elemental distributions measured by X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI), particularly for mobile endogenous elements. While effects of formalin fixation have been widely studied, comparatively little is known regarding methacrylate embedding. Here, larval zebrafish (Danio rerio) exposed to methylmercury-l-cysteinate (MeHg-l-Cys) were preserved either by JB-4 methacrylate embedding or using cryosectioning/air-drying, called herein cryopreservation, then were sectioned and analyzed using quantitative XFI. Mercury distributions were l

Diet and methyl mercury contamination of nestling red-winged blackbirds.

Methyl mercury (MeHg) is a widespread environmental contaminant that can have adverse effects on the health of vertebrate wildlife. This study focused on diets and MeHg contamination of nestling red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) from a wetland in north Texas, USA. In previous research at the study site, a risk assessment model suggested that if emergent aquatic insects (i.e., odonates) were the dominant prey item in nestling diets, the health of nestling red-winged blackbirds could be negatively affected. The purpose of this study was to follow up on an earlier risk assessment and de
