Evaluation of retinal and choroidal microvasculature parameters by OCTA in patients with premature ovarian insufficiency: a prospective case control study.

OBJECTIVE: Postmenopausal cohorts show reduced vessel density on optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), yet OCTA data specific to premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) are lacking. We aimed to characterize retinal and choroidal microvasculature in women with POI using OCTA and to compare these findings with age-matched women with regular menses. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 36 women with POI and 52 healthy controls underwent right-eye best-corrected visual acuity testing, Schirmer I, tear breakup time (TBUT), and OCTA (RTVue XR Avanti/AngioVue). Quantitative outputs inclu

Retinal Microvascular Dysfunction Reflects Vascular and Alzheimer's-Related Pathology in Dementia With Lewy Bodies.

BACKGROUND: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) frequently coexists with cerebrovascular injury and Alzheimer's-related pathology, yet accessible in vivo markers of these processes remain limited. The retinal microvasculature shares structural and physiological characteristics with cerebral small vessels and may provide a non-invasive window into neurovascular and neurodegenerative pathology. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 32 individuals with DLB and 31 age-matched cognitively unimpaired controls (CU) underwent swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), brain MRI, and

Retinal microvascular morphology versus COVID-19: What to anticipate?

BACKGROUND: To investigate retinal microvascular morphological changes in previously COVID-19 infected patients using optical coherence tomo … . CONCLUSIONS: Prior COVID-19 infection seems to be associated with significant changes in retinal microvascular density, as well as FAZ and flow parameters, which may be attributed to different pathogenic mechanisms that lead to SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as thrombotic microangiopathy and angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 disruption.

Observational study of the microcirculation in patients with liver cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Liver cirrhosis is associated with widespread microcirculatory dysfunction and hemodynamic derangement, which may play a role in the pathogenesis of multiple organ failure. Little is known, however, about the progression of microvascular alterations as the severity of liver disease worsens. Therefore, our aim is to quantify the peripheral systemic microcirculatory changes associated with increasing severity of liver cirrhosis. METHODS: Forty patients with liver cirrhosis were studied and divided into groups based on Child-Pugh classes A (n = 9), B (n = 18), and C (n = 13)

Modulation of perfusion and oxygenation by red blood cell oxygen affinity during acute anemia.

Responses to exchange transfusion using red blood cells (RBCs) with modified hemoglobin (Hb) oxygen (O(2)) affinity were studied in the hamster window chamber model during acute anemia to determine its role on microvascular perfusion and tissue oxygenation. Allosteric effectors were introduced in the RBCs by electroporation. Inositol hexaphosphate (IHP) and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furfural (5HMF) were used to decrease and increase Hb-O(2) affinity. In vitro P50s (partial pressure of O(2) at 50% Hb saturation) were modified to 10, 25, 45, and 50 mm Hg (normal P50 is 32 mm Hg). Allosteric effectors al

Role of nitric oxide synthase/arginase balance in bronchial reactivity in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Responses to exchange transfusion using red blood cells (RBCs) with normal and reduced flexibility were studied in the hamster window chamber model during acute moderate isovolemic hemodilution to determine the role of RBC membrane stiffness in microvascular perfusion and tissue oxygenation. Erythrocyte stiffness was increased by 30-min incubation in 0.02% glutaraldehyde solution, and unreacted glutaraldehyde was completely removed. Filtration pressure through 5-microm pore size filters was used to quantify stiffness of the RBCs. Anemic conditions were induced by two isovolemic hemodilution st

Ginsenoside Rg3 inhibits angiogenesis in gastric precancerous lesions through downregulation of Glut1 and Glut4.

Ginsenoside Rg3 (GRg3) is a ginsenoside extracted from Panax ginseng. GRg3 displays multiple pharmacological properties, such as antitumor, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative and antifibrotic properties. However, whether GRg3 inhibits angiogenesis in gastric precancerous lesions (GPLs) and the possible mechanisms remain unknown. GRg3 attenuated gastric intestinal metaplasia and gastric dysplasia, the hallmark of GPL pathology, in rats with MNNG-ammonia compound induced GPLs. Increased CD34+ microvessel density and VEGF expression, which indicate the presence of angiogenesis, were evident in the
