Is there a role for transrectal microwave hyperthermia of the prostate in the treatment of abacterial prostatitis and prostatodynia?

Transrectal microwave hyperthermia of the prostate was administered to 54 patients with chronic abacterial prostatitis or prostatodynia, who failed to respond to several courses of conventional therapies. Hyperthermia was delivered in 60-min long sessions with three randomly chosen regimens (1 session/week for 4 weeks; 1 session/week for 6 weeks; 2 sessions/week for 3 weeks). A prostatic temperature of 42.5 +/- 0.5 degrees C was maintained throughout the entire duration of each session. Patients were assessed pre- and postoperatively by scoring of subjective symptoms, uroflowmetry with flow no

[The pathogenesis of central nervous system functional disordersafter exposure to microwave radiation].

A rate of lipid peroxidation, content of biogenic amines and cyclic nucleotides were studied in various brain structures of 168 rats under conditions of microwave irradiation within 24 min at 46 mW/cm2. Total irradiation of animals was shown to result in distinct inhibition of monoaminergic activity of brain, especially of hypothalamus, in impairment of metabolic reactions, in exhaustion of the lipid antioxidative system of brain cortex and in stimulation of the contrainsular apparatus functions.

[Thermoradiotherapy of malignant choroid melanoma. Development of a new microwave hyperthermia system].

The therapeutic effects of heat (43 degrees C) as an adjunct to irradiation have generated increasing interest in oncology. It was shown that hyperthermia in addition to irradiation may allow for a radiation dose reduction which may be followed by a decreased irradiation - induced ocular morbidity rate. Intraocular malignant tumors offer excellent conditions for heat application since tumor volumes are small and heat can be locally generated to the tumor through the overlying sclera. Additionally, the vascular supply of intraocular melanoma is restricted to the choroid, limiting the blood flow

Preliminary report on the treatment of esophageal cancer by intraluminal microwave hyperthermia and chemotherapy.

Thirty-two cases of esophageal cancer were treated with thermochemotherapy from August 1984 to June 1985. A combination of bleomycin (20 mg per session iv) and cisplatin (0.5-0.9 mg/kg per session as low dose and 1.0-2.0 mg/kg per session as high dose), or of bleomycin, cisplatin (high dose), and cyclophosphamide (400-600 mg per session) were the treatment regimens. A 915-MHz microwave applicator was inserted into the lumen of the esophagus for heating. The temperature at normal adjacent tissue to the cancer was at 43-44 degrees C, while the temperature of the cancer was at 45 degrees C-50 deg

Effects of pulsed microwave radiation on the contractile rate of isolated frog hearts.

Hearts from 81 frogs were divided into 10 groups and placed individually in a temperature-controlled waveguide filled with Ringer's solution. Hearts of Group A served as controls. Hearts of the other nine groups were treated with pulsed microwaves (2450 MHz, 10 microseconds, 100 pps) that ranged from a specific-absorption rate (SAR) of 2 to 200 W/kg. In several groups, an electrocardiogram was used to synchronize microwave irradiation with the heartbeat. In one group of frog hearts exposed at 200 W/kg, the heart rate slowed down sharply 25 minutes after irradiation, by which time the temperatu…

Thermoradiotherapy of refractory malignant tumors: an experience with microwave and RF capacitive hyperthermia.

Basic and clinical evidence that hyperthermia with radiation therapy or selected chemotherapy could significantly improve therapeutic ratios has attracted considerable interest. A variety of heating equipment and techniques have been used in many early clinical studies, with encouraging results: 60-70% with complete tumor regression without concomitant increase of normal-tissue toxicity. New generations of hyperthermia systems being developed should improve results significantly. However, since tumor response is directly related to hyperthermic temperature and the uniformity of the temperature

Microwave-induced local hyperthermia in combination with radiotherapy of human malignant tumors.

Since 1976, two groups of patients have been treated with local microwave hyperthermia immediately following ionizing radiation. Group A patients had measurable multiple lesions assigned radiotherapy only, microwave hyperthermia only, or combined treatment. Ionizing radiation in 200-600 rad fractions was used 2-5 times per week to a total of 1800-4200 rad in 5-14 fractions. Group B patients had combination treatment only, with radiation fractions of 200-600 rad 2-5 times per week to a total of 2000-4800 rad total in 6-20 fractions. Both groups received hyperthermia (42-44 C) 2-3 times per week

A comparative study between microwaves and ultrasound assisted in- situ reduction of platinum supported γ-Al2O3 using different organic templates for enhanced catalytic activity and potential applications.

In this study, mesoporous alumina was synthesized and modified with two different surfactants: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, and pluronic P123, a non-ionic surfactant, using the sol-gel method. The synthesis involved the co-assembly of aluminum precursors with the surfactants, followed by calcination to remove the templates, resulting in a porous alumina structure that serves as a support. Platinum (Pt) was then loaded onto the surfactant-modified alumina support (CTAB) at a concentration of 0.9 wt% Pt using microwave-assisted solution (MAS) and ultrasonic techn

Does microwave irradiation have other than thermal effects on histological staining of the mammalian CNS? A light microscopical study of microwave stimulated staining under isothermal conditions in man and rat.

The question whether or not microwave irradiation exerts other than thermal effects on histological staining is still a matter of controversy. The present study was undertaken to reveal or reject such a so far hypothetical non-thermal irradiation effect. A device was developed, which enables exposure of histological sections or tissue pieces to microwave irradiation under isothermal conditions, i.e. with synchronous removal of the internal heat produced. Three classical neuroanatomical staining methods were tested on human and rat CNS. As control, identical procedures were performed without si

Preparation of Alkyl N-Alkylphosphonamidates by the Microwave-Assisted Selective Monoaminolysis of Dialkyl Phosphites.

The title compounds, (RO)(NHR')P(O)H, were synthesized earlier from P-chloro intermediates by substitutions or from dialkyl phosphites by reaction with organometallic reagents. Instead of these not clear-cut and not efficient transformations, a green, solvent- and catalyst-free synthesis of alkyl phosphonamidates has been developed by the microwave-assisted aminolysis of dialkyl phosphites. The monosubstitution was fully selective. Under more forcing conditions, an interesting side reaction was observed. The resulting products may be valuable reagents to prepare α-hydroxy- and α-aminophosphoni

Ultra-compact high-Q silicon microring resonator for terahertz microwave photonics.

Microring resonators (MRRs) are key building blocks for conventional integrated microwave photonic signal-processing circuits due to their compact footprint and tailorable resonant response. However, when the operating frequency further extends into the terahertz regime, simultaneously achieving a high quality (Q) factor and a terahertz-scale FSR remains highly challenging, primarily because ultra-small bending radii generally introduce excessive optical loss. In this Letter, we report an ultra-compact silicon MRR based on a multimode-interference-assisted generalized Euler-circular (GEC) bend

Sequential supercritical CO₂ and microwave-assisted extraction for dual valorization of berry pomace.

In this study, redcurrant, blackcurrant, blueberry, and chokeberry pomace were valorized using supercritical CO₂ extraction (SC-CO₂) followed by microwave-assisted extraction of defatted residues. SC-CO₂ yielded 2.75-7.46% lipid fraction, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, mainly linoleic acid, with β-sitosterol as the predominant phytosterol. Redcurrant lipid fraction showed the highest tocopherol content. Chokeberry defatted pomace exhibited the highest total polyphenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity. UPLC-MS/MS identified over 40 phenolic compounds, with the highest anthocyanin

Successful occlusion of a bronchobiliary fistula using percutaneous microwave ablation: a case report.

Bronchobiliary fistula (BBF) is an exceptionally rare and complex clinical entity that involves abnormal communication between the biliary system and the bronchial tree. This article presents the first reported case of BBF successfully occluded with percutaneous microwave ablation (PMWA). A 35-years-old female with primary colon cancer developed BBF after PMWA for liver metastasis and presented with bilioptysis that persisted despite conventional antibiotic therapy and drainage. Under computed tomography (CT) guidance, targeted PMWA with an ablation power of 40 w was applied to the fistula tra

Characterization of Lubricant-Infused Surface Coatings Using a Label-Free Microwave Sensor.

Lubricant-infused surfaces (LIS) provide critical advantages for biomedical applications, including reduced biofouling and enhanced device performance. However, monitoring lubricant stability and depletion in real-time remains challenging due to limitations in existing characterization methods. This study presents a novel, noninvasive, label-free microwave sensing platform utilizing a coplanar ultrawideband (UWB) slot antenna coupled with a complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR)-based multisurface passive tag to accurately assess the stability and evaporation dynamics of fluorocarbon-based

Invisible plastic release from overlooked usage practices in microwaved food packaging.

Plastic food packaging is an overlooked source of invisible contamination during microwaving. In this study, polyethylene (PE) residues released from microwaveable food packaging, including onigiri wrappers, porridge cartons, and milk cartons, were investigated under microwave conditions representative of routine consumer use. PE release increased markedly with heating duration. Nile Red fluorescence staining showed that microplastic size decreased from 3.88 ± 0.28 μm to 3.18 ± 0.23 μm during prolonged heating. Dynamic light scattering analysis revealed nanoplastic particles within 1-3 min of
