This study examined the natural course of psychological functioning in recently bereaved middle-aged women. 69 widows were assessed four times (T1-T4) between the period of 4 to 13 mo. after the loss and were compared to a matched nonwidowed group of 57. Of the SCL-90 feelings of depression, agoraphobic behavior, anxiety, hostility, somatization, feelings of insufficiency, and sleep disorders were heightened at 4 mo. after bereavement compared to the norm group. The authors analyze case histories of 642 patients aged over 50 years with mandibular fractures, treated in 1988-1998 at Clinic for Maxillofacial Surgery of Russian State Medical University. Multiple fractures occurred in patients with mandibular adentia 1.5 times more often than in patients with teeth. The present study has investigated ear and hearing problems in 44 women with Turner's syndrome (median age 45.5 years). Social hearing problems were common after the age of 40 and 27% were fitted with hearing aids. Audiograms revealed a hearing loss > 20 dB hearing level (HL) in 91% leading to clinically significant hearing problems in 60%. Among 574 patients aged older that 60 strangulation of the intestine was diagnosed in 62%, obturation--25,8%. Association diseases were established in 62% of cases. Operations were performed in 67,6% of patients. Lethality rate was 22,2% (in recent years it was reduced to 18%). In the group of patients who received correction of bioenergetics and microcirculation of the intestinal wall with an original mixture the lethality was reduced to 8%.

An indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test was used to establish the background prevalence of antibody to Legionella pneumophila in single serum specimens from 1,143 persons. Hepatoblastoma is a primary embryonic liver tumour usually found in children. It extremely rarely occurs in adults and, when it does, is usually found in men, although it has been postulated that in women it may be associated with use of the oral contraceptive pill. We present a case of a 51-year-old White woman with no history of oral contraception. The features of this tumour are reviewed.
