Mapping gaps and exploring impairment and disability prevalence in South Asian (SAARC) countries: a scoping review.

Despite the considerable health and economic burden of disability in the South Asian (SA) region, there is limited evidence of impairments and disabilities prevalence and the need for Assistive Technologies (ATs). This scoping review aims to synthesise the evidence of the impairments and disabilities in SA countries. This review followed Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework. EBSCOhost, EMBASE, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were searched for original research articles from SA countries. In this study, impairment and disability refer to functional limitations restricting individ

Locomotor Strategy to Perform 6-Minute Walk Test in People with Multiple Sclerosis: A Prospective Observational Study.

Two-thirds of people with Multiple Sclerosis (PwMS) have walking disabilities. Considering the literature, prolonged tests, such as the 6 min walk test, better reflect their everyday life walking capacities and endurance. However, in most studies, only the distance traveled during the 6MWT was measured. This study aims to analyze spatio-temporal (ST) walking patterns of PwMS and healthy people in the 6MWT. Participants performed a 6MWT with measures of five ST variables during three 1 min intervals (initial: 0'-1', middle: 2'30″-3'30″, end: 5'-6') of the 6MWT, using the GAITRite system. Forty-

Exploring outdoor activity limitation (OAL) factors among older adults using interpretable machine learning.

BACKGROUND: The occurrence of outdoor activity limitation (OAL) among older adults is influenced by multidimensional and confounding factors associated with aging. AIM: The aim of this study was to apply interpretable machine learning (ML) to develop models for multidimensional aging constraints on OAL and identify the most predictive constraints and dimensions across multidimensional aging data. METHODS: This study involved 6794 community-dwelling participants older than 65 from the National Health and Aging Trends Study (NHATS). Predictors included related to six dimensions: sociodemograph

Interest in Telerehabilitation Among Patients with Mild to Severe Multiple Sclerosis: Results of the Czech Republic.

Background: Research in telerehabilitation (TR) in neurology tends to focus on patients with low to moderate disability. For neurology patients with severe mobility limitations, TR can help to enable rehabilitation for people whose mobility limitations make it difficult for them to access rehabilitation facilities. The aim of this study is to evaluate the interest of people with neurological disability caused by multiple sclerosis (MS) in TR services. Methods: This electronic survey targeted individuals with MS, specifically those with a higher level of disability. Results: A total of 355 pati…

Transapical Cannulation With a Dual Lumen Cannula for Mechanical Circulatory Support in Cardiogenic Shock.

Temporary mechanical circulatory support can be delivered through a variety of techniques, including percutaneous left ventricular assist devices, surgically implanted rotary pumps, and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. However, limitations include the effects of high afterload, intravascular hemolysis, patient vascular anatomy, surgical morbidity, and limited patient mobility which can hinder patient recovery. We describe a series of patients managed with transapical left ventricular mechanical circulatory support using a dual lumen cannula for the management of cardiogenic s

Evaluating Mobility in Advanced Dementia: A Scoping Review and Feasibility Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Mobility decline is a symptom of advanced dementia that affects function, safety, caregiving, and quality of life. Monitoring mobility status is essential for initiating timely and targeted interventions aimed at preventing excess disability in people with dementia (PWD). The physical, cognitive, and behavioral symptoms of dementia however, present unique challenges for mobility assessment. The goals of this review were to (a) identify and describe measures of mobility used for PWD and (b) assess measures' feasibility for use in people with advanced dementia; a group

Mobility in Old Age: Capacity Is Not Performance.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes of laboratory-based tests for mobility are often used to infer about older adults' performance in real life; however, it is unclear whether such association exists. We hypothesized that mobility capacity, as measured in the laboratory, and mobility performance, as measured in real life, would be poorly linked. METHODS: The sample consisted of 84 older adults (72.5 ± 5.9 years). Capacity was assessed via the iTUG and standard gait parameters (stride length, stride velocity, and cadence). Performance was assessed in real life over a period of 6.95 ± 1.99 days using smartpho

[Locomo 25--a screening tool for risk of locomotive syndrome].

Locomo 25 was developed as a screening tool of locomotive syndrome by Japanese orthopedic surgeon group in 2008. It contains 25 questions in terms of musculoskeletal disorder such as walking disability, difficulty in daily living, or suffering pain on body. Its reliability and validity were already confirmed through multi-center study including 731 Japanese elderly people (over 65 y.o. average 77 y.o.). The cutoff score for identifying locomotive syndrome was set at 16, and list-upped person is considered as under high-risk condition who may soon require care services without some medical inte

Orientation and mobility training for adults with low vision: a new standardized approach.

BACKGROUND: Orientation and mobility training aims to facilitate independent functioning and participation in the community of people with low vision. OBJECTIVE: (1) To gain insight into current practice regarding orientation and mobility training, and (2) to develop a theory-driven standardized version of this training to teach people with low vision how to orientate and be safe in terms of mobility. STUDY OF CURRENT PRACTICE: Insight into current practice and its strengths and weaknesses was obtained via reviewing the literature, observing orientation and mobility training sessions (n = 5)

Assessing walking disability in multiple sclerosis.

Most patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) eventually experience walking disability. The objective of this review was to evaluate the clinical utility of measures specific for walking in MS. Walking assessments had high reliability and were correlated with related measures, including the 12-item multiple sclerosis walking scale (MSWS-12). Shorter timed walking tests (Timed 25-foot Walk (T25FW), 10-metre Timed Walk, 30-metre Timed Walk) measure overall walking disability and are best suited for clinical settings, whereas longer timed or distance tests (100-metre Timed Walk, 6-minute Walk Test,

The comparison of regional spinal curvatures and movements in sitting posture in ambulatory children with cerebral palsy having minimal-to-moderate functional limitations.

AIM: To examine the regional spinal curvatures and movements in the sagittal and frontal planes during sitting position, and the ability to act independently in patients with CP and to compare the differences between children and adolescents with minimal-to-moderate functional limitations. METHOD: Twenty-one participants diagnosed with CP aged 5-16 years were included. The participants' Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels were determined and those at levels I (minimal functional limitation group: minFLG) or II-III (moderate functional limitation group: modFLG) were inclu
