Impact of 15 years of social, political and economic shocks on population mental health in the UK: a longitudinal, Bayesian quasi-experimental analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mental health in the UK has worsened over the last 15 years, a period marked by major systemic shocks. OBJECTIVE: We investigated annual changes in population-level psychological distress and the impact of five systemic shocks: the referendum on European Union membership (Brexit), two COVID-19 lockdowns, Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the UK Government's 2022 'mini-budget'. METHODS: We used longitudinal survey data from the UK Household Longitudinal Study, including 87 857 between years 2009 and 2024. We used Bayesian time series models to evaluate annual changes in psychologic

Association of Type D Personality and Anatomical Complexity as Predictors of Long-Term Mortality in Coronary Artery Disease: A Retrospective Case Study Based on Hospital Records.

Background: Traditional cardiovascular risk models often overlook "residual risk" driven by psychopathological factors. This study investigates the exploratory prognostic baseline associations of Type D personality (TDP) and specific symptomatic dimensions with long-term all-cause mortality in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Methods: We conducted a retrospective case study based on hospital records evaluating 221 patients with confirmed CAD. Anatomical complexity was quantified via the SYNTAX Score (SS). Psychological profiling utilized the DS14 scale for TDP and the SCL-90 for gr

Early Auditory and Psychological Shifts in Newly Enlisted Republic of Korea Air Force Soldiers Exposed to Aircraft Noise: A Pilot Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Aircraft noise is an occupational and environmental stressor associated with auditory injury and adverse mental health outcomes, but prospective evidence in newly enlisted personnel remains limited. This pilot study examined early changes in hearing thresholds and psychological well-being among Republic of Korea Air Force soldiers. METHODS: Newly enlisted soldiers were enrolled at baseline ( n  = 96); 52 completed 8-month follow-up. Air-conduction thresholds were measured at 250 to 8000 Hz. Psychological and sleep outcomes were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (

Psychosocial factors behind addiction-a six-wave longitudinal comparison of at-risk gambling and drinking.

AIMS: Research indicates that shared and specific underlying factors influence different addictions, sometimes resulting in co-occurring problems. The evidence concerning risk and protective factors for gambling and alcohol addiction, along with their co-occurrence, remains ambiguous. To address this gap, this study will conduct longitudinal research to examine the factors associated with at-risk behaviours over time. METHODS: We utilize a sample of 18- to 75-year-old participants (N = 1530) from Finland. Participants were surveyed every six months between 2021 and 2023, covering six rounds o

Relationship between positive psychological factors and social participation in individuals with spinal cord injury: a prospective cross-sectional study.

We studied the relationship between positive psychological factors, such as resilience and sexual/body esteem, and negative psychological factors to investigate the effects of positive psychological factors on social participation after spinal cord injury (SCI). The demographic characteristics, clinical characteristics, psychological measurements, and social participation of adults with SCI living in the community in Korea (N=110) were assessed. Pearson correlation analysis was employed to identify the relationships between negative and positive psychological factors. Hierarchical multiple reg

The Mediating Role of Rumination in the Relation between Basic Psychological Need Frustration and Depressive Symptoms.

Research within the framework of Basic Psychological Need Theory (BPNT) finds strong associations between basic need frustration and depressive symptoms. This study examined the role of rumination as an underlying mechanism in the association between basic psychological need frustration and depressive symptoms. A cross-sectional sample of N = 221 adults (55.2% female, mean age = 27.95, range = 18-62, SD = 10.51) completed measures assessing their level of basic psychological need frustration, rumination, and depressive symptoms. Correlational analyses and multiple mediation models were conduct

Psychological factors affecting physical condition. Cardiovascular disease literature review. Part I: Coronary artery disease and sudden death.

A subcommittee of the American Psychiatric Association's Psychiatric Systems Interface Disorders Work Group was charged with examining the diagnostic category, Psychological Factors Affecting Physical Condition, for possible revision in the DSM-IV. As members of this subcommittee, we conducted a literature review to better characterize the current state of knowledge regarding the relationship between psychological factors and cardiovascular disease. This review, divided into two parts, focuses on three problems: coronary artery disease, sudden death, and hypertension. For each of these cardiov

Psychological Wellbeing, Worry, and Resilience-Based Coping during COVID-19 in Relation to Sleep Quality.

The current study evaluated the impact of psychological wellbeing on sleep quality during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. A novel empirical model tested variables that mediate and moderate this impact. First, a relationship was established between psychological wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic and sleep quality. Second, resilience-based coping associated with the COVID-19 pandemic was tested as a mediator of the impact of psychological wellbeing on sleep quality. Third, dispositional rumination, mindfulness, and worry were compared as moderators of the impact of psychological wellbei

East meets West: cross-cultural generalizability of the numinous motivation inventory in Poland and Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: The motivations to find durability to our mortal existence (i.e., infinitude), coherence in the midst of otherwise chaotic experiences (i.e., meaning), and a sense that our lives are worthy in the unfolding story of our species (i.e., worthiness), are powerful psychological qualities that, in part, comprise the uniqueness of our humanity. The psychological dimension hypothesized to encapsulate these qualities is referred to as The Numinous. METHODS: This study tested competing measurement models to ascertain how universal numinous motivations are across two culturally distinct peo

Associations of social jetlag with mental health, somatic symptoms, and work functioning in a nationwide Japanese survey: A population-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Social jetlag (SJL), reflecting misalignment between biological circadian rhythms and socially imposed sleep schedules, has been linked to adverse health outcomes. However, population-based studies examining mental health, somatic symptoms, and work functioning simultaneously are limited. This study aimed to investigate the associations of SJL with these outcomes in a nationwide Japanese general population. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data from 12,372 individuals participating in the 2025 Japan Society and New Tobacco Internet Survey; 48.6% of the participants were male.

Psychological distress and compliance with sanitary measures during the Covid-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to understand the relationship between the experience of psychological distress and compliance with COVID-19 sanitary measures. We testeed whether this relationship was modified by individuals' gender and socioeconomic status (i.e., educational level and employment). METHODS: Data from four European cohort studies (n = 13,635), were analysed using an Individual Participant Data (IPD) meta-analytic approach. Mixed effect models were employed to examine associations between mental health difficulties and compliance with sanitary measures, as well as effect modificati

The Impact of War on Asthma, a Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis: An EAACI Task Force Report.

Wartime events have been followed by an increase in asthma prevalence, which is believed to result from a combination of environmental hazards and psychological trauma. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate this relationship by pooling available data on various wartime exposures, such as occupational, environmental, and psychological factors. MEDLINE, Scopus, and Cochrane databases were searched for articles that measure the effect of war-related exposures on asthma. Risk of bias was assessed using the Effective Public Health Practice Project tool. The retrieved effects

Gender differences in perceived triggers and progression factors of vitiligo: evidence from Brazil.

Vitiligo is a chronic immune-mediated dermatological condition with substantial psychosocial consequences. Patients' explanatory models shape coping, treatment engagement and quality of life, but evidence on how these models vary by gender outside Western settings remains scarce. Drawing on the biopsychosocial model and the Common Sense Model of self-regulation, we mapped the perceived triggers and progression factors that Brazilian adults with vitiligo deploy when explaining their condition and tested whether men and women converge or diverge in those explanatory accounts. Cross-sectional onl

Moving on From Simple Operationalism: Anchoring Theoretical Constructs in Rich Relational Models.

Operational definitions have long been a core approach to measuring and relating observed data to theoretical constructs in psychological science. However, many contemporary modeling approaches conflict with the tacit assumptions of operationalism as it is implemented in psychology. Counterintuitively, these departures imbue model-based definitions of constructs with superior measurement properties, such as improved reliability and validity, when compared with their operationalizations based directly on observables. Instead of relying on operational definitions of constructs, we instead sugges

Psychological intervention with adult victims of sexual abuse: A comprehensive review.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) is a phenomenon that is ubiquitous to all cultures and social classes. It has short- and long-term consequences, with specific treatment models that have been developed and adapted from psychological intervention models. A wide variety of studies have sought to evaluate the results of treatments with adult CSA survivors. This study presents an overview of research on the treatment of adult victims of CSA, by reviewing the existing literature on the types of treatment and the most studied psychotherapeutic avenues, and reports the findings related to the efficacy of the

Perseverative Cognitions and Stress Exposure: Comparing Relationships With Psychological Health Across a Diverse Adult Sample.

BACKGROUND: Both exposure to stress and perseverative cognitions (PCs)-repetitive cognitive representations of real or imagined stressors-are linked with poor psychological health. Yet, stress exposure and PCs are correlated, thus potentially obscuring any unique effects. PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to concurrently test associations between stress exposure and PCs and psychological health to examine the independent relationship of each with psychological health. Moreover, we examined whether these relationships are similar across sex, age, and race. METHODS: An adult community samp

Key elements of an evidence-based clinical psychology service within adult critical care.

The COVID-19 pandemic has generated renewed interest in the psychological rehabilitation needs of patients admitted to intensive care units. While the availability of embedded practitioner psychologists within adult critical care teams remains inconsistent, post numbers have increased in response to the clinical needs of the pandemic. As psychology services within adult critical care become more widely established, models for service provision will be required. We describe our experience of developing a model for the delivery of a clinical psychology service within critical care in a District

Gender-Specific Association between Alcohol Consumption and Stress Perception, Depressed Mood, and Suicidal Ideation: The 2010-2015 KNHANES.

OBJECTIVE: Alcohol drinking can cause various psychiatric and medical diseases. Although women generally consume less alcohol than men, they may be at a greater risk for alcohol-related psychological distress. The aim of the current study is to evaluate whether the association between alcohol consumption and psychological distress, including stress, depressed mood, and suicidal ideation and the risks of psychological distress differ based on gender. METHODS: The cross-sectional study included 31,657 participants (17,915 women and 13,742 men) from the 2010-2013 and 2015 Korea National Health a
