OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) has been challenged by the lack of neurophysiologic data to guide therapy optimization. Current SCS programming by trial-and-error results in suboptimal and variable therapeutic effects. A novel system with a physiologic closed-loop feedback mechanism using evoked-compound action potentials enables the optimization of physiologic neural dose by consistently and accurately activating spinal cord fibers. We aimed to identify neurophysiologic dose metrics and their ranges that resulted in clinically meaningful treatment responses.

ARDS is the clinical consequence of acute lung injury that results in increased-permeability edema. Distinct pathophysiologic stages are reflected in the radiographic evolution of the syndrome. Diffuse microatelectasis, proteinaceous edema fluid, and multifocal in situ pulmonary vascular occlusions characterize the acute stages of injury and result in the appearance of diffuse consolidations and occasional pleural effusions on the radiograph. In the chronic organizing stage of ARDS, the physiologic consequences of subsiding edema and tissue repair may be reflected by a transition to stable int

Hierarchical algorithms have been developed for enhanced physiologic control and monitoring of blood pumps using pressure inputs. Pressures were measured at pump inlet and outlet using APEX pressure sensors (APSs). The APS is a patented, long-term implantable, flow-through blood pressure sensor and designed to control implantable heart pumps. The algorithms have been tested using a Donavan circulatory mock-loop setup, a generic rotary pump, and LabVIEW software. The hierarchical algorithms control pump speed using pump inlet pressure as a primary independent variable and pump outlet pressure a

Rises in global temperatures have threatened the health, safety, and productivity of workers who perform physically demanding work. Traditionally, occupational heat illness prevention plan have relied on environmental monitoring and administrative controls, however, these approaches do not account for the considerable intra- and inter-variability in physiological responses to extreme heat. In contrast, elite sport has served as a valuable test bed for investigating thermoregulation, exertional heat illness, and the feasibility of real-time physiological monitoring. Experiences from recent Olym

Acute kidney injury (AKI) affects thousands of hospitalized patients annually, yet early detection remains challenging as serum creatinine elevation lags behind clinical deterioration. Decreased urine output (UO) represents a key diagnostic criterion of AKI, sometimes manifesting hours before biochemical changes; however, current manual monitoring methods are labor-intensive and prone to error. Here, we developed and validated a simple, cost-effective automated urine flow meter using non-contact optical sensors, a peristaltic pump, and microcontroller-based automation for precise, real-time mo

Early detection of pain, stress, or hemodynamic instability is key to preventing serious clinical events. In recent years, non-invasive sensors and deep learning algorithms have gained relevance as tools for accurate and continuous monitoring. To map and synthesize the scientific evidence on the use of non-invasive multimodal sensors combined with deep learning algorithms for the early detection of physiological dysregulation states, including pain, stress, and hemodynamic deterioration, in patients over 13 years of age in clinical settings. A scoping review was conducted following the JBI and

Accurate, continuous monitoring of psychophysiological states is central to understanding stress and autonomic dysfunction across diverse medical contexts. Current approaches such as polygraphy and polysomnography rely on cumbersome, wired sensors that limit real-world utility and burden patients, particularly vulnerable populations such as infants. Here, we introduce a wireless, skin-interfaced multimodal sensing system capable of simultaneously recording cardiac, respiratory, electrodermal, and thermal signals in a time-synchronized manner. Leveraging compact and soft designs, the technology

Continuous physiological monitoring can support pilot-state assessment, but routine cockpit use requires sensing approaches that are both unobtrusive and physiologically reliable. Wearable ECG (wECG) provides stable cardiac recordings through skin-contact electrodes, whereas cockpit-integrated invisible ECG (iECG) can reduce user burden by acquiring signals through instrumented controls. However, iECG depends on intermittent hand contact and may show incomplete ECG morphology even when cardiac timing information is still preserved. This study proposes a window-based framework to assess the qua

BACKGROUND: Dislocation of an endotracheal tube (ETT) during invasive ventilation can lead to serious events such as unilateral ventilation or unintentional extubation. The correct position of the endotracheal tube is determined visually. X-ray imaging or invasive procedures such as bronchoscopy are established for repeated position verification. However, these measures are time-consuming and only provide a limited number of snapshots. A new monitoring method can recognize dislocations of the ETT. The proposed system operates automatically without the need for continuous staff awareness or int

Non-invasive respiratory support (NRS), including high flow nasal oxygen therapy, continuous positive airway pressure and non-invasive ventilation, is a cornerstone in the management of critically ill patients who develop acute respiratory failure (ARF). Overall, NRS reduces the work of breathing and relieves dyspnea in many patients with ARF, sometimes avoiding the need for intubation and invasive mechanical ventilation with variable efficacy across diverse clinical scenarios. Nonetheless, prolonged exposure to NRS in the presence of sustained high respiratory drive and effort can result in r

In the era of digital health, artificial intelligence (AI)-driven patient monitoring systems have attracted growing interest for their potential to prevent accidents in clinical settings. However, the advancement of these systems requires the availability of high-quality and annotated datasets that enable accurate detection and recognition of real-world situations. This study aims to present a new dataset for recognizing and tracking patients in bed positions proper to advance surveillance systems. From the free available Fall Simulation Dataset (FSD), videos depicting bed-related actions were

Studies have shown that wearable commercial off-the-shelf sensors, such as accelerometers, inertial measurement units, and heart monitors, can distinguish between individuals with a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and uninjured controls. However, there is no consensus on which metrics derived from wearable sensors are best to use for objective identification of mTBI symptoms. The primary aim of this scoping review was to map the state of knowledge of wearable sensor-based assessments for mTBI, based on previously published research. Data sources included Web of Science and PubMed. Original

Rapid global urbanization has intensified the demand for sensing solutions that can capture the complex interactions between urban environments and their impact on human physical and mental health. Conventional laboratory-based approaches, while offering high experimental control, often lack ecological validity and fail to represent real-world exposures. To address this gap, we present the eMOTIONAL Cities Walker-a portable multimodal sensing platform designed as a wearable backpack unit developed for the synchronous collecting of multimodal data in either indoor or outdoor settings. Remote monitoring and artificial intelligence will become common and intertwined in anesthesiology by 2050. In the intraoperative period, technology will lead to the development of integrated monitoring systems that will integrate multiple data streams and allow anesthesiologists to track patients more effectively. This will free up anesthesiologists to focus on more complex tasks, such as managing risk and making value-based decisions. This will also enable the continued integration of remote monitoring and control towers having profound effects on coverage and practice models. In the PACU an

The effectiveness of a wearable sinusoidal dipole antenna sensor in monitoring respiratory activity is investigated. An experimental setup combining the antenna sensor and a highly accurate optical tracking system is utilized, and a strong correlation between the antenna's reflection signal and the optical tracker is demonstrated during various respiratory behaviors. Obtained results show the antenna sensor's high accuracy in detecting respiratory cycles, amplitudes, and identifying sleep apnea events. The maximum mean squared error in cycle timings is calculated as 0.0044 seconds squared, and

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) refers to a method of measuring various indicators of the human body under gradually increasing exercise loads to objectively evaluate cardiopulmonary reserve function and exercise endurance. Currently, CPET detection systems primarily measure subjects' ECG, respiratory flow, oxygen (O 2), and carbon dioxide (CO 2) parameters. This paper introduces a non-invasive multi-parameter exercise cardiopulmonary function evaluation system that incorporates impedance cardiography monitoring. The system integrates impedance cardiography monitoring with conventional

Objective.Continuous monitoring of cerebrospinal compliance (CC)/cerebrospinal compensatory reserve (CCR) is crucial for timely interventions and preventing more substantial deterioration in the context of acute neural injury, as it enables the early detection of abnormalities in intracranial pressure (ICP). However, to date, the literature on continuous CC/CCR monitoring is scattered and occasionally challenging to consolidate.Approach.We subsequently conducted a systematic scoping review of the human literature to highlight the available continuous CC/CCR monitoring methods.Main results. This

Heart failure (HF) is a complex clinical syndrome associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. It is characterized by various structural and/or functional abnormalities of the heart, resulting in elevated intracardiac pressure and/or inadequate cardiac output at rest and/or during exercise. These dysfunctions can originate from a variety of conditions, including coronary artery disease, hypertension, cardiomyopathies, heart valve disorders, arrhythmias, and other lifestyle or systemic factors. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for detecting reversible or tr

Treatment decisions in epilepsy critically depend on information on the course of the disease, its severity and options for specific local interventions. We here report a patient with pharmaco-resistant non-lesional temporal lobe epilepsy with evidence for predominant right temporal epileptogenesis. While seizure frequency had been grossly underestimated for many years, ultralong-term monitoring with a subcutaneous EEG device revealed actual seizure frequency (66 over 11 months vs four patient-documented seizures), providing objective data on treatment efficacy and additional supportive latera
