Anopheles darlingi is the main vector of malaria in South America. In French Guiana, malaria transmission occurs inland and along the rivers with a regular reemergence in the lower Oyapock area. Control against malaria vectors includes indoor residual spraying of deltamethrin and the distribution of long-lasting impregnated bednets. In this context, the level of resistance to pyrethroids was monitored for 4 years using CDC bottle tests in An. darlingi populations. A loss of susceptibility to pyrethroids was recorded with 30-minute knock-down measured as low as 81%. However, no pyrethroid molec

Vector-borne diseases are among the most burdensome infectious diseases worldwide with high burden to health systems in developing regions in the tropics. For many of these diseases, vector control to reduce human biting rates or arthropod populations remains the primary strategy for prevention. New vector control interventions intended to be marketed through public health channels must be assessed by the World Health Organization for public health value using data generated from large-scale trials integrating epidemiological endpoints of human health impact. Such phase III trials typically fo

Competent arbovirus vectors are found in the culicid mosquito fauna of south-west Indian Ocean (SWIO) islands. In La Reunion, Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known vectors of dengue and chikungunya viruses. Culex quinquefasciatus is a potential vector of Rift Valley fever and West Nile viruses. To prepare a vector-control field trial against Ae. aegypti, this study aimed at identifying the best trapping strategy to catch adult Ae. aegypti, using BG-Sentinel traps (Biogents, Germany). It was implemented in two sites in southern La Reunion. Catches of Ae. albopictus and Cx. qui

Despite the annual implementation of a robust and extensive indoor residual spraying programme against malaria vectors in Limpopo Province (South Africa), significant transmission continues and is a serious impediment to South Africa's malaria elimination objectives. In order to gain a better understanding regarding possible causes of this residual malaria, we conducted a literature review of the historical species composition and abundance of malaria vector mosquitoes in the Limpopo River Valley region of the Vhembe District, northern Limpopo Province, the region with the highest remaining an

During the last years, headlines about the advance of tropical infectious diseases, which are transmitted by mosquitos, become more frequent. Some of these mosquitos are classified as invasive species in Europe. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) are enhancing the observation of the geographical spread of these species. Especially the Asian tiger mosquito and the Yellow fever mosquito are in focus. In Germany the vector competency of domestic mosquito species is investigated.

The control of dengue constitutes a great challenge for public health; however, the methods normally used have shown themselves to be insufficient to keep the indices of infestation of Aedes aegypti under control. Recently, beyond the large number of cases and deaths associated with dengue, new risks have arisen such as those represented by chikungunya fever and Zika. In the light of the great significance of these problems within the public health context, two areas in a municipality in the interior of the State of São Paulo, Brazil were selected in 2014. One of them, Bairro Cidade Nova, was

Mosquitoes can transmit many infectious diseases, such as malaria, dengue, Zika, yellow fever, and lymphatic filariasis. Current mosquito control strategies are failing to reduce the severity of outbreaks that still cause high human morbidity and mortality worldwide. Great expectations have been placed on genetic control methods. Among other methods, genetic modification of the bacteria colonizing different mosquito species and expressing anti-pathogen molecules may represent an innovative tool to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Nevertheless, this emerging approach, known as paratransgenesis, …

Mosquito-borne diseases cause several hundred thousand deaths worldwide every year. Deciphering mosquito host-seeking behavior is essential to prevent disease transmission through mosquito capture and surveillance. Despite recent substantial progress, we still lack a comprehensive quantitative understanding of how visual and other sensory cues guide mosquitoes to their targets. Here, we combined three-dimensional infrared tracking of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes with Bayesian dynamical systems inference to learn a quantitative biophysical model of mosquito host-seeking behavior. Vector-borne diseases, particularly arboviral diseases transmitted by mosquitoes (e.g. dengue, Zika and chikungunya), have (re)emerged globally with increasing prevalence and severity. Climatic and environmental changes have resulted in significant expansion of the geographical distribution of Aedes mosquito vectors to unprecedented levels, creating optimal conditions for their introduction and establishment in new areas, especially in Africa. The prevention of Aedes-borne diseases relies heavily on controlling vector populations. However, the global resurgence of dengue underscores the limita

BACKGROUND: Vector-borne diseases cause morbidity and mortality globally. However, some areas are more impacted than others, especially with climate change. Controlling vectors remains the primary means to prevent these diseases, but new, more effective tools are needed. The World Health Organization (WHO) prioritized evaluating novel control methods, such as sterile insect technique (SIT) for control of Aedes-borne diseases. In response, a multiagency partnership between the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Dise

Mosquito control plays a crucial role in the mitigation of mosquito-borne diseases. Larviciding that targets one of the aquatic stages is among the routine practices in mosquito control operations. One of the most extensive and challenging mosquito production sources in urban environments is underground storm drain systems. Along with the research and development of biorational larvicides in recent decades, numerous products based on microbial and insect growth regulators have become available. However, the performance of these products often varies because of product design and challenges ass…

Mosquito-borne diseases are a major public health concern, and exploiting the mosquito's reliance on host odors is an effective way to prevent human exposure. We evaluated the attraction of non-blood-fed female Anopheles stephensi Liston, 1901 mosquitoes (Bandar Abbas strain, laboratory population) to four chemical components found in vertebrate host odors (at 5 dilutions) and their blends using an olfactometer in laboratory conditions. When each compound was combined with CO2, three of the four tested compounds showed significant attractancy (P < 0.05) at their optimal dilutions. Hexanoic aci

Anopheles stephensi is an important malaria vector in India which has been repeatedly incriminated for transmitting urban malaria in different parts of the country. The fight for its control in the metropolitan cities of India dates back to as early as 1911. Using an integrated approach of bio-environmental control along with community education and strict enforcement of legislatures, India has shown exemplary success in the control of malaria in different urban cities. From this perspective, we discuss the different success stories and the way forward for An. stephensi control in a global man

BACKGROUND: The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a population suppression strategy that involves releasing sterile male insects, which mate with wild females, thereby inducing sterility in the target population. Although SIT represents a promising complementary approach for malaria vector control, its success depends on identifying an irradiation dose that ensures high sterility while preserving the biological performance of males. This study aimed to determine the optimal irradiation dose for sterilizing Anopheles coluzzii, a major malaria vector in West Africa, under laboratory conditions i

Malaria, caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium and transmitted to humans through the bite of mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles, remains a public health problem. Long-Lasting Insecticide -treated Bed Nets (LLINS) and Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS) represent the main vector control measures for malaria prevention. However, to address the concerns of mosquito resistance to pyrethroids, other malaria control strategies are being explored for effectively blocking malaria transmission by eliminating or reducing the parasite in the vector. This study evaluated the use of antimalarials through ta

BACKGROUND: Attractive targeted sugar baits (ATSBs) are a potential addition to an integrated vector management strategy against malaria. ATSB stations, which include a sugar bait and an ingestion toxicant, could potentially be deployed to attract-and-kill mosquitoes and thereby prevent malaria transmission. The physical durability of these stations is likely to be an important factor in decisions around future use strategies. This study measured the duration of physical integrity of the ATSB Sarabi v1.2 stations used in Western Zambia, as part of a Phase III cluster RCT.
METHODS: ATSB statio
