Examining the time course of genital and subjective sexual responses in women and men with concurrent plethysmography and thermography.

Sexual response is a dynamic process, though there is limited knowledge of the time course and relationships among its psychological and physiological components. To address this gap, we concurrently assessed self-reported sexual arousal, genital temperature (with thermography), and genital vasocongestion (with vaginal photoplethysmography [VPP] or penile plethysmography [PPG]) during sexual and nonsexual films in 28 androphilic women (attracted to men) and 27 gynephilic men (attracted to women). Men and women had similarly strong agreement between subjective and genital responses (sexual conc

[Tics and Tourette syndrome in literature, cinema and television].

INTRODUCTION: Different neurological diseases have often been portrayed in literature, cinema and television. Tics and Tourette syndrome, for example, are commonly represented from different perspectives, which are sometimes very realistic but in some cases are used for more dramatic purposes or to make a character look ridiculous. One of the main effects of these inadequate views is to further stigmatise those who suffer these movement disorders. AIMS: To review the way tics and Tourette syndrome have been portrayed in certain literary works, films and television. DEVELOPMENT: Tics are rapi

Parsing heterogeneity in autism spectrum disorders: visual scanning of dynamic social scenes in school-aged children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine patterns of variability in social visual engagement and their relationship to standardized measures of social disability in a heterogeneous sample of school-aged children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). METHOD: Eye-tracking measures of visual fixation during free-viewing of dynamic social scenes were obtained for 109 children with ASD (mean age, 10.2 ± 3.2 years), 37 of whom were matched with 26 typically-developing (TD) children (mean age, 9.5 ± 2.2 years) on gender, age, and IQ. The smaller subset allowed between-group comparisons, whereas the larger group was us

Persistent dispositionalism in interactionist clothing: fundamental attribution error in explaining prison abuse.

The Stanford Prison Experiment demonstrated some important lessons about the power of social situations, settings, and structures to shape and transform behavior. At the time the study was done, the authors scrupulously addressed the issue of whether and how the dispositions or personality traits of the participants might have affected the results. Here the authors renew and reaffirm their original interpretation of the results and apply this perspective to some recent socially and politically significant events.

Genital and subjective sexual arousal in postmenopausal women: influence of laboratory-induced hyperventilation.

The current study was aimed at comparing genital and subjective sexual arousal in pre- and postmenopausal women and exploring the effects of heightened sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity on these parameters. Seventy-one women (25 young and premenopausal, 25 postmenopausal, and 21 age-matched premenopausal women) participated in two counterbalanced sessions consisting of genital arousal assessment with vaginal photoplethysmography and subjective arousal assessment with self-report questionnaires. SNS activity was enhanced using laboratory-induced hyperventilation. Results demonstrated no

Shiraz University students' attitude towards drugs: an exploratory study.

Using a self-reported questionnaire, 213 Shiraz University students were surveyed about their attitudes towards drug use (cigarettes, alcohol, opium, heroin, cannabis) and their use of drugs (ever or during the 6 months prior to the study). About 52% had smoked cigarettes, 25% had tried alcohol, 21% opium and 12% cannabis; only one student had used heroin. Those who had used drugs obtained them from and used them with friends or acquaintances. The majority of students wanted more information on drugs, and considered television and films the best medium for providing information. Drug use among

Time course of effects of testosterone administration on sexual arousal in women.

BACKGROUND: The assumption that testosterone is involved in human female sexual functioning is mainly based on results of studies of women with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. This study sought to determine the effect of testosterone administration on physiological and subjective sexual arousal in sexually functional women. METHODS: In a double-masked, randomly assigned, placebo-controlled crossover design, we examined whether administration of a single dose of testosterone to sexually functional women increases vaginal and subjective sexual arousal when they are exposed to erotic visual stimu

[PECULIAR CLINICAL FEATURES OF OSTEOPOROSIS IN PATIENTS WITH METABOLIC SYNDROME].

AIM: To study peculiar clinical features of osteoporosis in patients with metabolic syndrome (MS). METHODS: We examined 160 patients with osteoarthrosis divided into 2 groups each containing 80 patients with MS and without it (control). Osteoarthrosis was diagnosed using the R. Althmann (1995) criteria. The parameters measured were localization of articular lesions, frequency of inflammatory processes (synovitis), and pain intensity based on a VAS at rest and in motion, WOMAC index, characteristics of acute inflammation (ESR, C-reactive protein and TNF levels). RESULTS: Frequency of joint le

Radiologic and echocardiographic patterns of 98 cases of atrial septal defect without other defects (isolated atrial septal defect).

We collected 98 cases of single atrial septal defect. Analytical study of the pulmonary vasculature and the shape of the heart allowed us to differentiate 71 cases of pulmonary hypervascularity with increased cardiothoracic index and an appearance of right ventricular dilatation. The left inferior segment was usually straight, but sometimes convex, with a great curvature including the middle left segment. Apart from these 71 typical cases, there were 18 cases of incomplete patterns, 7 cases of atypical patterns with a convex left inferior segment with a small curvature and two normal cases (no

Following the Complete Thermal Landscape of a Protein by Neutron Scattering.

Protein dynamics is intimately coupled to hydration and stability, yet direct observation of the full sequence of thermally induced transitions remains instrumentally challenging. Here, we present a study that exploits the unique properties of Yfh1, one of the few natural proteins that undergoes both cold and heat denaturation at experimentally accessible temperatures, to probe protein dynamics by advanced elastic incoherent neutron-scattering instrumentation that allows detection of motions over an unprecedently broad momentum-transfer range and a range of 100-330 K temperatures. We identifie

Understanding resonant inelastic X-ray scattering experiments of diazines via quantum dynamics simulation.

We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the three diazine isomers pyrazine, pyrimidine, and pyridazine by means of resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) at the nitrogen K-edge, employing fully time-dependent quantum dynamics simulations to understand the role of nuclear motion in core-excited states. The RIXS process is simulated by wave-packet propagation in both the valence- and core-excited state manifolds, carried out with the (multilayer) multiconfigurational time-dependent Hartree [(ML-)MCTDH] method. We use linear vibronic coupling Hamiltonians with up to 22 ele

A Theoretical Investigation of Nonadiabatic Dynamics and Time-Resolved NEXAFS Spectra of Uracil.

Uracil, a fundamental RNA nucleobase, exhibits complex excited-state dynamics governed by nonadiabatic processes that prevent photodamage. Upon photoexcitation, population initially reaches the bright ππ* (S2) state and subsequently relaxes to the dark nπ* (S1) state via conical intersections, before returning to the ground state on picosecond-nanosecond time scales. In this work, we investigate the ultrafast S2 → S1 relaxation pathway using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT)-based nonadiabatic surface hopping dynamics in combination with simulated time-resolved near-edge X-ray

How frictional ruptures and earthquakes nucleate and evolve.

Frictional motion is mediated by rapidly propagating ruptures that detach the ensemble of contacts forming the frictional interface between contacting bodies1-7. These ruptures are similar to shear cracks. When this process takes place in natural faults, these rapid ruptures are essentially earthquakes8,9. Although fracture mechanics describe the rapid motion of these singular objects, the nucleation process that creates them is not understood10-19. Here we fully describe the nucleation process by extending fracture mechanics to explicitly incorporate finite interface widths (which are general

Prospective Analysis of Functional and Structural Changes in Patients with Spinal Muscular Atrophy-A Pilot Study.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a rare, autosomal recessive neuromuscular disease. Recent years have seen a significant development of therapeutic options for SMA patients. With the development of treatment methods, it has become necessary to adapt a physiotherapeutic approach to the evolving clinical picture of SMA patients. We presented an analysis of 40 SMA patients undergoing pharmacological treatment, examined twice in an average interval of 5 months. Twelve patients (non-sitters) were evaluated using CHOP-INTEND, while 28 (sitters) were tested using the Hammersmith scale. The research p

Patterns of cortical activation following motor tasks and psychological-inducing movie cues in heroin users: an fMRI study.

OBJECTIVE: Drug abuse and addiction are worldwide health problems. However, few studies have used fMRI to investigate the effect of chronic heroin use on brain activation. This is a study along this line. METHOD: fMRI positive sites in the brain were recorded during different motor and sensory activities. RESULTS: Following motor activities, heroin users had more sites globally activated in the brain than in normal volunteers, with ex-heroin users being least reactive. Conversely, a "heroin puffing" movie produced more activation in ongoing-heroin and ex-heroin users than in the normal indiv

Team acceptance of specific recommendations for the treatment of VPI as provided by speech pathologists.

This retrospective study describes the frequency of one team's acceptance of speech pathologists' recommendations for specific secondary treatment procedures for the correction of VPI for 100 consecutive patients. In addition, assessment was made of the level of success in eliminating VPI relative to treatments utilized that were recommended by speech pathologists versus level of success when treatment other than that recommended by speech pathologists were used. For the 78 patients who received the treatment procedure recommended by speech pathologists, only 10 percent continued to demonstrat

Vagotonicity of violence: biochemical and cardiac responses to violent films and television programmes.

In a search for a reproducible means of evoking different types of emotional stress it was found that in spite of increased adrenaline secretion slowing of the heart occurred when watching violent television programmes. Further evidence of increased vagal tone was provided by the "sinus arrhythmia" effect, a widening of the gap between the maximum and minimum heart rates during the respiratory cycle in parts of the humour, violence, and suspense sections of the television programme.Groups of people taken to see two particularly violent films showed similar evidence suggesting vagal overactivit
