The (in)effectiveness of anticipatory vibrotactile cues in mitigating motion sickness.

The introduction of (fully) automated vehicles has generated a re-interest in motion sickness, given that passengers suffer much more from motion sickness compared to car drivers. A suggested solution is to improve the anticipation of passive self-motion via cues that alert passengers of changes in the upcoming motion trajectory. We already know that auditory or visual cues can mitigate motion sickness. In this study, we used anticipatory vibrotactile cues that do not interfere with the (audio)visual tasks passengers may want to perform. We wanted to investigate (1) whether anticipatory vibrot…

Objective and subjective responses to motion sickness: the group and the individual.

We investigated and modeled the temporal evolution of motion sickness in a highly dynamic sickening drive. Slalom maneuvers were performed in a passenger vehicle, resulting in lateral accelerations of 0.4 g at 0.2 Hz, to which participants were subjected as passengers for up to 30 min. Subjective motion sickness was recorded throughout the sickening drive using the MISC scale. In addition, physiological and postural responses were evaluated by recording head roll, galvanic skin response (GSR) and electrocardiography (ECG). Experiment 1 compared external vision (normal view through front and si…

Diaphragmatic breathing and its effectiveness for the management of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness is an unpleasant physiological state that may be controlled via nonpharmacological methods. Controlled breathing has been shown to maximize parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) tone and may have the ability to decrease motion sickness symptoms. METHODS: The effects of slow diaphragmatic breathing (DB) in a motion sickness-inducing environment were examined within motion sickness susceptible individuals. Subjects (N = 43) were assigned randomly to either an experimental group trained in slow DB or a control group breathing naturally at a normal pace. The experimenta…

Susceptibility to nausea and motion sickness as a function of the menstrual cycle.

PURPOSE: The present study examined whether susceptibility to nausea and other symptoms of vection-induced motion sickness vary as a function of phase of the menstrual cycle, as research findings in this area are sparse and contradictory. DESIGN: Ninety young women (42 current users of oral contraceptives) were exposed to a rotating optokinetic drum during the peri-menses or peri-ovulatory phase of the menstrual cycle in an independent-groups, quasi-experimental design. Nausea and motion sickness symptoms were assessed using the Nausea Profile (NP) and the Subjective Symptoms of Motion Sickne…

Effect of tryptophan depletion on symptoms of motion sickness in migraineurs.

Seven hours after 39 migraineurs and 37 controls consumed an amino acid drink that contained or omitted l-tryptophan (thereby reducing brain serotonin synthesis), motion sickness was provoked by the visual illusion of movement. Tryptophan depletion boosted dizziness, nausea, and the illusion of movement in controls to levels that approached those of migraineurs. Thus, reduced brain serotonin activity may promote vestibuloocular disturbances during motion sickness and attacks of migraine.

Efficacy of acupressure and acustimulation bands for the prevention of motion sickness.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to examine whether acupressure and acustimulation prevent motion sickness, taking into consideration whether or not the acupressure and acustimulation are administered properly. These techniques claim to reduce nausea through stimulation of the P6/Neiguan acupuncture point by applying acupressure or electrical acustimulation. METHODS: The Acuband and ReliefBand were used to administer acupressure and acustimulation, respectively. There were 77 subjects who were assigned to 1 of 5 conditions: Acuband trained or untrained; ReliefBand trained or untrai…

The contribution of expectations to motion sickness symptoms and gastric activity.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this investigation was to determine in healthy adults the effect of expectation manipulations on the development of motion sickness, as indicated by abnormal gastric myoelectric activity and subjective reports of symptoms of motion sickness. METHOD: Eighty participants, moderately susceptible to motion sickness, experienced one of four conditions created from a two-variable (Expectation, Drum), two-factor model (High/Low expectation for sickness; Rotating/Stable Drum). The electrogastrogram (EGG) was recorded 6 min prior to the expectation manipulation; 6 min following …

The critical role of velocity storage in production of motion sickness.

We propose that motion sickness is mediated through the orientation properties of velocity storage in the vestibular system that tend to align eye velocity produced by the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (aVOR) with gravito-inertial acceleration (GIA). (GIA is the sum of the linear accelerations acting on the head. In the absence of translational accelerations, gravity is the GIA.) We further postulate that motion sickness produced by cross-coupled vestibular stimulation can be characterized by a metric composed of the disparity between the axis of eye rotation and the GIA, the strength of the…

Effect of frequency and direction of horizontal oscillation on motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: Low frequency horizontal oscillation can cause motion sickness in some transportation systems, but the influence of the frequency, magnitude, direction, and duration of oscillation are poorly understood. HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that motion sickness was independent of the direction of horizontal oscillation (fore-and-aft or lateral) and that there was no difference in the motion sickness produced by different frequencies of horizontal oscillation (between 0.2 and 0.8 Hz) when subjects were exposed to the same peak velocity of motion at each frequency. METHOD: The 192 subje…

Comparison of marezine and dramamine in preventing symptoms of motion sickness.

BACKGROUND: The most common pharmacological agents for alleviating symptoms of motion sickness in the U.S. are over-the-counter antihistamines. Two example are dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and cyclizine (Marezine). HYPOTHESIS: Dramamine and Marezine suppress overall motion sickness symptoms with equal effectiveness, but Dramamine affects the central nervous system (CNS), while Marezine affects the stomach directly. METHODS: This study employed a double-blind, within-subject design to compare the effectiveness of Marezine (50 mg) and Dramamine (50 mg), in preventing subjective symptoms and gast…

[Experimental studies of motion sickness on board of a research ship].

To date the incidence and treatment of motion sickness have not been satisfactorily elucidated. Discrepancies among individuals in tolerating strong velocities and accelerations are well-known. To prevent motion sickness evaluations of individual predispositions are important. There are several current theories on the nature of motion sickness. These include the mismatching of sensory inputs, a Coriolis force, non-physiological stimuli and modulation of vestibuloocular reflexes (VOR). The main influence of the vestibular organ in generating kinetosis is obvious. Analysis of the chief movements…

Phenytoin as a countermeasure for motion sickness in NASA maritime operations.

Seasickness is the most prevalent form of motion sickness and is an operational problem during Space Shuttle Solid-fueled Rocket Booster (SRB) retrieval. Phenytoin has been shown to protect against motion sickness induced by Coriolis stress. We exposed SRB recovery personnel to off-vertical rotation and sea motion after phenytoin or placebo. Phenytoin blood levels of at least 9 micrograms/ml were protective against motion sickness at sea. No change in susceptibility to nitrogen narcosis was seen in divers in chamber tests at 460 KPa. Phenytoin was used during performance of critical and hazard…

The involvement of cerebrovascular reactivity in pathogenesis of space motion sickness.

The aim of the presented work is to investigate the mechanisms of involvement of cerebral circulation in pathogenesis of space motion sickness. In experiments on chronic rabbits the 2-hours rocking and antiorthostasis served as a model of influences of the zero-gravity conditions intracranial hemo- and liquorodynamics. Cerebravascular reactivity was evaluated as a response of cerebral blood flow and intracerebral rheoencephalography to functional loads (photostimulation, CO2-inhalation, Stookey test). Shifts of water balance in the brain tissue has been assessed by means of three-frequency bra…

[Requirement of an "ideal" drug for prevention of space motion sickness].

The range of effects and mechanisms of action of drugs that are promising in terms of the development of a potent and low toxicity drug to prevent space motion sickness was identified. The use of anticonvulsive and adaptogenic drugs as a prophylactic measure of the syndrome was theoretically confirmed. In human studies these drugs were shown to exert a noticeable effect on statokinetic stability and mental performance. Possible mechanisms of anti-motion++ action of the drugs are described. Requirements for an ideal drug to prevent space motion sickness are formulated.
