Relationship of helmet use and head injuries among motorcycle crash victims in El Paso County, Colorado, 1989-1990.

A case-control study was conducted in El Paso County, Colorado to estimate differences in risk of head injury among persons in motorcycle crashes who were or were not wearing helmets. There were 71 cases, motorcyclists with head injuries from crashes, and 417 controls, motorcyclists in crashes without head injuries. Motorcyclists not wearing helmets were 2.4 times as likely to sustain head injuries (95% confidence limits: 1.23, 4.70) than motorcyclists wearing helmets. This odds ratio was adjusted for age and crash characteristics, using logistic regression. Alcohol intoxication and severity o

Complete Thoracoabdominal Wall Avulsion and Right Hemidiaphragmatic Rupture Following High-Energy Motorcycle Trauma: A Case Report.

High-energy motorcycle trauma can produce catastrophic thoracoabdominal wall disruption with diaphragmatic rupture, a rare and frequently lethal injury pattern that demands immediate damage control management to interrupt the lethal triad of hypothermia, acidosis, and coagulopathy. We report a 31-year-old man who sustained complete avulsion of the right thoracoabdominal wall with right hemidiaphragmatic crural rupture after being ejected from a motorcycle at high speed. Definitive surgical referral was delayed by eight hours, during which the patient progressed to grade IV hemorrhagic shock. D

The effects of road safety education on the occurrence of motorcycle violations and accidents for novice riders: An analysis of population-based data.

The prevalence of motorcycle riding among novice riders in most Southeast Asia countries presents an alarming rate of traffic violations and fatal accidents. Since 2013, Taiwan's government has gradually required a road safety class (RSC) for the rider's licensing process. The RSC consisted of watching videotapes of motorcycle-involved crashes followed by lectures on safety measures. Our study tried to see whether a compulsory RSC could lower the likelihood and frequency of road accidents and traffic violations among novice riders. To avoid self-selection bias, we selected 480,114 novice rider

Toward better measurement of traffic injuries - Comparison of anatomical injury measures in predicting the clinical outcomes in motorcycle crashes.

INTRODUCTION: Little evidence exists in the literature regarding the discrimination power of better anatomical injury measures in differentiating clinical outcomes in motorcycle crashes. Furthermore, multiple injuries to different body parts of the rider are seldom analyzed. This study focuses on comparing anatomical injury measures such as the injury severity score (ISS) and the new injury severity score (NISS) in capturing injuries of multiple injured riders and examining the discriminatory capabilities of the ISS and NISS in predicting clinical outcomes post motorcycle crash. METHODS: The

Trauma demography and clinical epidemiology of motorcycle crash-related head injury in a neurosurgery practice in an African developing country.

OBJECTIVE: Though motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) were the main cause of head trauma from road traffic injuries (RTIs), motorcycle crashes (MCCs) are now a major cause of RTI-related head injury (HI) in many developing countries. METHODS: Using a prospective database of HIs from a neurosurgical practice in a sub-Saharan African developing country, a cross-sectional survey was conducted for the trauma demography and clinical epidemiology of this MCC-related HI. RESULTS: Motorcycle crashes accounted for 57% (473/833) of all RTI-related HIs in this registry. The victims, with a mean age of 33.1 ye

Rider factors associated with severe injury after a light motorcycle crash: A multicentre study in an emerging economy setting.

OBJECTIVE: In Taiwan, light motorcycles (LMCs) with cylinder capacities between 50 and 250 cc are widely used for daily commute. These vehicles are operated in a mixed traffic environment and prohibited on highways. In light of increasing motorcycle casualties, we conducted a multicentre study to analyse rider factors affecting injury severity. METHODS: Riders hospitalised upon LMC crashes were contacted. Information on demographics, comorbidities, and riding behaviours was collected through questionnaires and linked to hospital data. The injury severity score (ISS) and length of hospitalisat…

A heterogeneity based case-control analysis of motorcyclist's injury crashes: Evidence from motorcycle crash causation study.

The main objective of this study is to quantify how different "policy-sensitive" factors are associated with risk of motorcycle injury crashes, while controlling for rider-specific, psycho-physiological, and other observed/unobserved factors. The analysis utilizes data from a matched case-control design collected through the FHWA's Motorcycle Crash Causation Study. In particular, 351 cases (motorcyclists involved in injury crashes) are analyzed vis-à-vis similarly-at-risk 702 matched controls (motorcyclists not involved in crashes). Unlike traditional conditional estimation of relative risks,

Impact of Helmet Use on Injury and Financial Burden of Motorcycle and Moped Crashes in Hawai'i: Analysis of a Linked Statewide Database.

Helmet use reduces injury severity, disability, hospital length of stay, and hospital charges in motorcycle riders. The public absorbs billions of dollars annually in hospital charges for unhelmeted, uninsured motorcycle riders. We sought to quantify, on a statewide level, the healthcare burden of unhelmeted motorcycle and moped riders. We examined 1,965 emergency medical service (EMS) reports from motorcycle and moped crashes in Hawai'i between 2007-2009. EMS records were linked to hospital medical records to assess associations between vehicle type, helmet use, medical charges, diagnoses, an

Helmet use among motorcycle and moped riders injured in Hawaii: Final medical dispositions from a linked database.

BACKGROUND: Reports regarding helmets in motorcycle crashes have been limited by the lack of data across the spectrum of injury outcomes, generally excluding low-severity injuries that do not require further medical treatment. We hypothesized that the protective effect of helmets may be underestimated in studies that focused only on patients who arrive at a trauma center and that it may differ depending on whether the crash involved a motorcycle or moped. METHODS: The emergency medical service reports of 2,553 crash patients treated from 2007 to 2009 were linked to police crash reports, hospi

Performance of a cognitive, but not visual, secondary task interacts with alcohol-induced balance impairment in novice and experienced motorcycle riders.

The appropriateness of applying drink driving legislation to motorcycle riding has been questioned as there may be fundamental differences in the effects of alcohol on driving and motorcycling. It has been suggested that alcohol may redirect riders' focus from higher-order cognitive skills such as cornering, judgement and hazard perception, to more physical skills such as maintaining balance. To test this hypothesis, the effects of low doses of alcohol on balance ability were investigated in a laboratory setting. The static balance of twenty experienced and twenty novice riders was measured wh
