Imaging of rhinosinusitis and its complications: plain film, CT, and MRI.

Conventional plain-film radiography may be used as a screening method for various pathological conditions of the sinonasal cavities. However, CT scanning remains the study of choice for the imaging evaluation of acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of sinonasal cavities. MRI is superior to CT in differentiating inflammatory conditions from neoplastic processes. The most common complications of rhinosinusitis in children occur in the orbit. The information obtained from the CT scan and MRI, together with clinical findings, may be the best guidelines for clinical management and the mode of tr

Alcohol and skin disorders: with a focus on psoriasis.

Alcohol is a serious cause of morbidity and mortality in our society and is implicated in multiple health conditions, including hepatic failure, neurological damage, hematological disorders, and nutritional deficiencies, to name a few. Although alcohol induced cutaneous abnormalities can also cause significant morbidity, they tend to be overshadowed by the other disease states associated with alcohol use. In addition to the cutaneous stigmata linked to chronic alcoholic liver disease, alcohol can directly cause or exacerbate several skin conditions. In particular, alcohol misuse is implicated

Etiology of pure tricuspid regurgitation.

Of multiple etiologies for pure tricuspid regurgitation, the causes may be divided into those associated with anatomically abnormal and anatomically normal tricuspid valves. Conditions associated with anatomically abnormal valves include rheumatic, floppy, Ebstein's anomaly, carcinoid, infective endocarditis, papillary muscle dysfunction, and other rarer causes such as radiation, hypereosinophilic syndrome, and endomyocardial fibrosis. Conditions associated with anatomically normal tricuspid valves include multiple causes of cor pulmonale (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, primary pulmona

Gastroparesis in Non-Diabetics: Associated Conditions and Possible Risk Factors.

BACKGROUND: Gastroparesis is a syndrome characterized by delayed gastric emptying in the absence of any mechanical cause. While often associated with diabetes mellitus, most cases of gastroparesis are idiopathic. The purpose of the present paper is to review the co-morbid conditions that most likely associate with non-diabetic gastroparesis. METHODS: The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project: Nationwide Inpatient Sample (HCUP-NIS) data were used from the year 2013 - 2014 and the Apriori algorithm was run on this subset of patients to identify what co-morbid conditions are most likely associ

MDSCs in Chronic Liver Disease: Updates and Future Challenges.

Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a heterogeneous population of pathologically expanded immature myeloid cells originating from bone marrow precursors, characterized by their potent immunosuppressive activity through mechanisms such as T cell inhibition, cytokine dysregulation, and metabolic interference. These cells are critically implicated in diverse pathological contexts, including cancer progression, chronic infections, and inflammatory disorders. In chronic liver diseases, MDSCs contribute to the pathogenesis of multiple conditions, such as chronic viral hepatitis, alcoholic l

Personality change before and after diagnosis of chronic respiratory diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) can impact functioning and multiple physical and mental health outcomes, but their impact on psychological traits is less understood. This study investigated personality trajectories before and after the diagnosis of CRD. METHOD: Data were from the Health and Retirement Study. Personality and chronic respiratory conditions were assessed between 2006 and 2020 (N = 17,078, n = 1,044 with CRD, 40,971 personality assessments). Multilevel models evaluated personality changes before and after CRD diagnosis, accounting for sociodemographic, clinical, and

The Role of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants against Obesity and Arthritis: A Review.

Obesity is a significant health concern, as it causes a massive cascade of chronic inflammations and multiple morbidities. Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis are chronic inflammatory conditions and often manifest as comorbidities of obesity. Adipose tissues serve as a reservoir of energy as well as releasing several inflammatory cytokines (including IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α) that stimulate low-grade chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders, fatty liver disease, oxidative stress, and chronic kidney diseases

A Case of Atrial Flutter Masking Acute Pericarditis.

Atrial flutter (AFL) is a macro-reentrant tachycardia that can be provoked by numerous factors, including acute pericarditis. We present a case of new-onset AFL masking acute pericarditis in a man with multiple comorbid conditions, including hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and obstructive sleep apnea. After a failed attempt of rate control, the patient underwent successful cardioversion, which revealed electrocardiographic findings consistent with acute pericarditis. Colchicine was avoided in the setting of chronic kidney disease and the patient was treated with a steroid taper. Pericard

Use of cyclosporine A 0.05% ophthalmic emulsion for a distinctive intrapalpebral phenotype of anterior scleritis.

Chronic scleritis poses a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge with multiple mimickers, underlying autoimmune conditions, diverse presentations and variable course. Treatment for mild forms includes topical corticosteroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). For long-term control in patients with inadequate responses to steroids and NSAIDs, immunomodulators are employed. While oral cyclosporine has been used for inflammatory ocular conditions, research on topical cyclosporine for scleritis is limited. We present two cases: a man in his early 60s and a women in her late 20s, bot

Say-do-report training to change chronic behaviors in mentally retarded subjects.

Two mentally retarded subjects with language deficits participated. A say-do-report correspondence training was implemented to break the functions of present conditions given by a long history of contingencies maintaining chronic inadequate patterns of behavior. The say-do-report procedure was implemented following a multiple baseline design across two behaviors in one subject and in an AB design for the other. During baseline, all possible social contingencies maintaining the inadequate behaviors were eliminated. Promising or saying what a subject would do was then implemented and followed by

Chronic Inflammation: A Multidisciplinary Analysis of Shared Pathways in Autoimmune, Infectious, and Degenerative Diseases.

Chronic inflammation is a prolonged immune response that contributes to various diseases, including neuropathies, autoimmune conditions, and metabolic disorders. This review explores the role of chronic inflammation across multiple medical specialties, emphasizing its impact on diseases such as chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and chronic hepatitis. It highlights common inflammatory biomarkers such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and C-reactive protein (CRP), which drive tissue damage and disease progressio

Neurofibrillary tangles in chronic alcoholics.

Magnocellular neurons in the cholinergic nucleus basalis appear to be vulnerable in a variety of pathological conditions, including chronic alcoholism. While neurofibrillary degeneration of these neurons has been noted in a number of disorders characterized by dementia, the mechanism of cell death in thiamine-deficient chronic alcoholics has not been identified. In the present post-mortem investigation, multiple brain regions of seven thiamine-deficient chronic alcoholics, three neurologically asymptomatic chronic alcoholics and seven non-alcoholic age matched controls were screened for neurof

Multiple psychosomatic symptoms can indicate child physical abuse - results from a study of Swedish schoolchildren.

AIM: To examine whether children with self-reported experiences of either physical abuse alone or combined with intimate partner violence report more psychosomatic symptoms than other children and to explore whether these possible associations are enhanced by school-related factors, chronic condition and demographic factors. METHODS: A national cross-sectional study of 2771 pupils in grades 4, 6 and 9 from 44 schools in Sweden was carried out in 2006 (91% response rate). Data were analysed with univariate tests (chi-square), multiple logistic regression analyses and stratified logistic regres

Inflammation and insulin resistance as novel mechanisms of wasting in chronic dialysis patients.

Over the last decade, there have been no proven therapies to lower the mortality and morbidity risk for chronic dialysis patients. One of the most important determinants of this poor clinical outcome is protein energy wasting (PEW), a unique and highly prevalent nutritional and metabolic abnormality primarily characterized by increased protein breakdown in the skeletal muscle compartment. Although the etiology and mechanisms leading to increased protein breakdown in chronic dialysis patients are complex and mostly ill-defined, two well-recognized and presumably interrelated metabolic abnormali

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor agonists modulate neuropathic pain: a link to chemokines?

Chronic pain presents a widespread and intractable medical problem. While numerous pharmaceuticals are used to treat chronic pain, drugs that are safe for extended use and highly effective at treating the most severe pain do not yet exist. Chronic pain resulting from nervous system injury (neuropathic pain) is common in conditions ranging from multiple sclerosis to HIV-1 infection to type II diabetes. Inflammation caused by neuropathy is believed to contribute to the generation and maintenance of neuropathic pain. Chemokines are key inflammatory mediators, several of which (MCP-1, RANTES, MIP-

Relationship between hypothyroidism and chronic kidney disease: Results from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007 to 2012 and Mendelian randomization study.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and hypothyroidism are prevalent chronic conditions with a generally believed correlation between them. However, large-scale population studies and investigations into causation are lacking. This study analyzed CKD and thyroid function data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database spanning 2007 to 2012 using multiple regression analyses to examine the correlation between CKD and hypothyroidism. Bidirectional Mendelian randomization analysis was employed to investigate the causal association between the two conditions. As CKD stages deterio

Alagille Syndrome: A Case Report Highlighting Dysmorphic Facies, Chronic Illness, and Depression.

Alagille syndrome is a rare multisystem disorder affecting the liver, heart, vertebrae, eyes, and face. Alagille syndrome shares multiple phenotypic variants of other congenital or chronic childhood illnesses such as DiGeorge syndrome, Down syndrome, spina bifida, type 1 diabetes mellitus, and cystic fibrosis. All of these chronic illnesses have well-established links to psychiatric conditions. There are few community resources for Alagille patients, as it is an extremely rare condition. Despite the overlap with other chronic childhood illnesses, the psychiatric manifestations of Alagille synd
