Fatigue and myalgia in AIDS patients.

Fatigue and myalgia are common in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). To determine whether altered muscle metabolism or impaired activation of muscle might account for these symptoms, we utilized three different exercise protocols to produce fatigue in nine AIDS patients who complained of both fatigue and exercise-exacerbated myalgia. Five were taking azidothymidine (AZT), which may cause a mitochondrial myopathy. Simultaneous measures of force, EMG, and muscle metabolites (phosphocreatine, inorganic phosphate, adenosine triphosphate, and intracellular pH) using phosphorus

Fatigue of Cancer is Distinctly Different than the Fatigue of Chronic Kidney Disease.

INTRODUCTION: It remains unclear whether the mechanisms of fatigue in cancer and chronic kidney disease (CKD) are different. The assessment of self-reported fatigue by standard scales, muscle fatigue by the objective reduction in finger tapping speed, and the cost to the brain of the exercise by the rating of perceived effort (RPE) help to compare the phenotypes of fatigue between the two conditions and explore the mechanisms of fatigue. METHODS: We initially assessed the correlations between fatigue, measured by the Brief Fatigue Inventory (BFI); muscle fatigue (measured by the finger tappin…

Activation of α7 Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptor Improves Muscle Endurance by Upregulating Orosomucoid Expression and Glycogen Content in Mice.

There are presently no acknowledged therapeutic targets or official drugs for the treatment of muscle fatigue. The alpha7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α7nAChR) is expressed in skeletal muscle, with an unknown role in muscle endurance. Here, we try to explore whether α7nAChR could act as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of muscle fatigue. Results showed that nicotine and PNU-282987 (PNU), as nonspecific and specific agonists of α7nAChR, respectively, could both significantly increase C57BL6/J mice treadmill-running time in a time- and dose-dependent manner. The improvement …

Trunk stability in fatiguing frequency-dependent lifting activities.

BACKGROUND: Work-related low-back disorders (WLBDs) are one of the most frequent and costly musculoskeletal conditions. It has been showed that WLBDs may occur when intervertebral or torso equilibrium is altered by a biomechanical perturbations or neuromuscular control error. The capacity to react to such disturbances is heavily determined by the spinal stability, provided by active and passive tissues and controlled by the central nervous system. RESEARCH QUESTION: This study aims to investigate trunk stability through the Lyapunov's maximum exponent during repetitive liftings in relation to

Neural Drive Impairment in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Is Associated with Neuromuscular Fatigability and Fatigue.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have a high degree of fatigue relating to neuromuscular symptoms. There is a lack of evidence regarding the etiology of neuromuscular fatigability in elderly CKD patients. METHODS: Inclusion criteria are as follows: age ≥60 yr, glomerular filtration rate (GFR) <45 mL·min -1 per 1.73 m 2 in CKD patients, and GFR >60 mL·min -1 ·1.73 m -2 in controls. The fatigability protocol consisted in a submaximal handgrip task at 40% peak force. Fatigue was assessed using the Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 items (MFI-20) and the Functional Assessme

The effect of aminophylline on function and intracellular pH of the rat diaphragm.

We studied the effect of aminophylline on twitch tension (TT) and intracellular pH (pHi) in isolated rat diaphragm strips that were fatigued … g fatigue or hypercapnic acidosis, and caused partial recovery of twitch depression during hypoxia. Muscle fatigue was not due to an intracellular acidosis. Both hypercapnia and hypoxia lowered pHi. Aminophylline did not alter pHi in unstimulated muscles, but caused a significant fall in pHi in stimulated muscles that were fatigued or hypoxic. High dose aminophy …

Effects of repeated isometric and eccentric contractions on active muscle stiffness.

BACKGROUND: Joint stiffness endurance is considered essential in many sports events. We previously reported that reduced joint stiffness due to repetitive hopping was associated with reduced active muscle stiffness. However, the determinants of active muscle stiffness endurance were unknown. This study aimed to compare the effects of repeated isometric contractions (ISO), which induced metabolic muscle fatigue, and repeated eccentric contractions (ECC), which induced muscle damage, on active muscle stiffness endurance. METHODS: Fourteen males performed two kinds of fatigue tasks (ISO and ECC)…

Alterations in the Neuromuscular Control Mechanism of the Legs During a Post-Fatigue Landing Make the Lower Limbs More Susceptible to Injury.

Fatigue causes the lower limb to land in an injury-prone state, but the underlying neuromuscular control changes remain unclear. This study aims to investigate lower limb muscle synergies during landing in basketball players, both before and after fatigue, to examine alterations in neuromuscular control strategies induced by fatigue. Eighteen male recreational basketball players performed landing tasks pre- and post-fatigue induced by 10 × 10 countermovement jumps. Electromyographic (EMG) data from eight muscles, including the erector spinae (ES), rectus abdominus (RA), gluteus maximus (GM), r

Muscle Shear Moduli Changes and Frequency of Alternate Muscle Activity of Plantar Flexor Synergists Induced by Prolonged Low-Level Contraction.

During prolonged low-level contractions, synergist muscles are activated in an alternating pattern of activity and silence called as alternate muscle activity. Resting muscle stiffness is considered to increase due to muscle fatigue. Thus, we investigated whether the difference in the extent of fatigue of each plantar flexor synergist corresponded to the difference in the frequency of alternate muscle activity between the synergists using muscle shear modulus as an index of muscle stiffness. Nineteen young men voluntarily participated in this study. The shear moduli of the resting medial and l…

The impact of synbiotic administration through in ovo technology on the microstructure of a broiler chicken small intestine tissue on the 1st and 42nd day of rearing.

BACKGROUND: According to research, fast skating on short distances increases functional asymmetry of leg muscles. As has been proven in many sporting disciplines, this asymmetry can increase the risk of injury. The aim of the study was to analyze the level of right and left myolectrical manifestations of fatigue asymmetry of gluteus maximus muscle in elite skaters on a short track and to compare this phenomenon to a control group. The muscles were chosen deliberately, due to their influence in maintaining the right position during training on ice. METHODS: The experiment compared a group of e

Optimal neuromuscular electrical stimulation parameters after spinal cord injury.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is often used to activate muscles impaired after spinal cord injury to elicit functional activities or to facilitate exercise. However, in addition to the cost and availability of NMES and the inherent muscle fatigue that is associated with its use may limit its widespread utilization. Optimizing stimulation parameters during NMES-induced contractions could maximize force production with less fatigue.Purpose: To examine the interrelationship of pulse duration and pulse frequency on torque production and muscle fatigue in both impaired and non-impaire…

Mechanomyography and tissue oxygen saturation during electrically-evoked wrist extensor fatigue in people with tetraplegia.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive electrically-evoked muscle contractions lead to the early onset of muscle fatigue. This study assessed the relationship between muscle mechanomyography (%RMS-MMG) and tissue oxygen saturation (%TSI) in extensor carpi radialis (ECR) during electrically-evoked fatiguing exercise in individuals with tetraplegia. METHODS: Skin-surface mechanomyography (MMG) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) sensors were placed on the ECR of seven individuals with tetraplegia. All participants performed repetitive electrically-evoked wrist extension to fatigue while their muscle MMG and …

Reduction in respiratory muscle strength following a series of preparatory and maximal static, dry breath-holds.

Breath-hold diving poses significant physiological challenges to maintaining O2 homeostasis. During a maximal breath-hold, numerous, subsequently augmenting, involuntary respiratory muscle contractions against a closed glottis (i.e., involuntary breathing movements, IBMs) may elicit respiratory muscle fatigue, especially under conditions of arterial hypoxemia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine whether respiratory muscle fatigue occurs following a series of static breath-holds in 14 trained male divers. To do so, we measured transdiaphragmatic twitch pressure (PDI,TW), maximal in…

Inactivation of ATG13 stimulates chronic demyelinating pathologies in muscle-serving nerves and spinal cord.

Chronic muscle fatigue is a condition characterized by debilitating muscle weakness and pain. Based on our recent finding to study the potential effect of mTOR on ATG13 inactivation in chronic muscle fatigue, we report that biweekly oral administration with MHY1485, a potent inducer of mTOR, develops chronic illness in mice resulting in severe muscle weakness. As a mechanism, we observed that MHY1485 feeding impaired ATG13-dependent autophagy, caused the infiltration of inflammatory M1 macrophages (Mφ), upregulated IL6 and RANTES by STAT3 activation, and augmented demyelination in muscle-servi…

Reduced Active Muscle Stiffness after Intermittent Submaximal Isometric Contractions.

PURPOSE: Whether muscle stiffness is influenced by fatigue remains unclear. Classical methods used to assess muscle stiffness provide a global measure at the joint level. As fatigue may selectively affect specific muscles, a joint-level approach may not be sensitive enough to detect potential changes in muscle stiffness. Taking advantage of ultrasound shear wave elastography, this study aimed to determine the influence of a fatiguing protocol involving intermittent submaximal isometric contractions on muscle shear modulus (an index of stiffness). METHODS: Shear modulus was measured on either

A New Approach to Quantifying Muscular Fatigue Using Wearable EMG Sensors during Surgery: An Ergonomic Case Study.

(1) Background: Surgeons are exposed to musculoskeletal loads that are comparable to those of industrial workers. These stresses are harmful for the joints and muscles and can lead to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) and working incapacity for surgeons. In this paper, we propose a novel ergonomic and visualization approach to assess muscular fatigue during surgical procedures. (2) Methods: The activity of eight muscles from the shoulder girdle and the cervical/lumbar spines were evaluated using position and electromyographic wearable sensors while a surgeon performed an arthroscopic rotator-cuf
