[The effect of music therapy on anxiety level in hospitalized asthmatic patients].

The role of music therapy as a supportive treatment is not well defined. The music therapy cannot be estimated as the isolated method it is often only the part of the complex therapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of music therapy on anxiety level in hospitalized asthmatic patients. The patient group was consisted of 36 patients with bronchial asthma (23 women and 13 men). In all patients we evaluated the level of anxiety (attribute and state) according to Spielberger and intensity of dyspnoe according to Borg scale at the first day of examination and after 10 days of reh…

Do musical hallucinations always arise from the inner ear?

It has been known for some time that musical hallucinations occur in deaf patients. This has been ignored, as it has been believed that neurological and psychiatric causes predominate. However, despite specific appeals, no one with musical hallucinations and a lesion in the brain but not in the ear has been produced. The postulated otological basis is a hyperactive state of the ear, a slight endolymphatic hydrops or pre-Meniere's disease. The hallucinations probably develop out of rhythmic tinnitus. A review of all the very disparate states and diseases supposedly causing musical hallucination…

[Reduction of preoperative anxiety. A study comparing music, Thalamonal and no premedication].

Ninety ASA I-II patients scheduled for a pre-planned surgical operation were randomly assigned to three groups: the first of these received no premedication, the second received 1-2 ml Thalamonal i.m., and the third were offered music from a walkman via earphones. Excluded from the study were patients under 15 and over 65 years of age, patients suffering from malignant diseases, those expecting operations of uncertain outcome, and patients whose mother tongue was not German. All 90 patients were cared for by the same investigator. She obtained informed consent on the eve of the scheduled opera…

Spared musical abilities in a conductor with global aphasia and ideomotor apraxia.

A conductor suddenly developed global aphasia and severe ideomotor apraxia as a result of an infarct in the territory of the left middle cerebral artery. Although aphasia and apraxia remained unchanged during the following six years, his musical capacities were largely spared and he was still able to conduct. This case provides some evidence in favour of right hemisphere dominance for music.

Musical murmurs in human cerebral arteries after subarachnoid hemorrhage.

A transcranial ultrasonic method for the recording of murmurs from cerebral vessels is described. Using the new approach the authors have observed musical murmurs of pure tone quality in 15 patients with increased flow velocities in the cerebral arteries after spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). The frequency range of the pure tones was from 140 to 820 Hz, corresponding to flow velocities between 73 and 215 cm/sec. The musical murmurs occurred as a transitional state between silent flow and the well known phenomenon of bruit. They were observed between the 4th and the 20th day after SAH…

An exploratory study of the effects of disco music on the auditory and vestibular systems.

The records were examined of 575 university students given audiometry and queried on their attendance at discos and on certain symptoms (vertigo, tinnitus, headache, nausea, otalgia) often associated with the Tullio effect. Of these, 365 Ss had attended discos (local discos were at 123-126 dBC), 128 had binaural greater than or equal to 25 db HTLs at 4 and/or 6 kc/s, and 82 had Tullio symptoms, while 44 had both audiometric loss and Tullio symptoms. This exploratory retrospective survey seemed to show that disco-going adversely affected both auditory and vestibular mechanisms in some Ss. Sugge

"What's the point?": A Case Report on Music Therapy and Terminal Cancer.

Palliative care (PC) helps to improve quality of life and alleviate suffering for those who are faced with a terminal cancer diagnosis. Music therapy (MT) is a type of expressive arts therapy that may be beneficial for PC patients to help manage physical symptoms as well as address psychosocial, spiritual, and existential needs. The present case report explores the use of MT as an existential form of therapy with Joe, a PC patient with terminal lung cancer. MT addressed Joe's physical and psychosocial needs and provided space to explore existential topics related to death and dying, ultimately…

The Effects of Music on Inflammation: A Bibliometric Study from 1989 to 2024.

This bibliometric study maps the scientific landscape of research on music and inflammation from 1989 to 2024. Using Scopus data analyzed through Biblioshiny and VOSviewer, we examined publication trends, influential authors, thematic evolution, and co‑occurrence patterns of inflammation‑related biomarkers. The expanded search strategy incorporated biological mediators such as cytokines, IL‑6, TNF‑α, CRP, and cortisol to ensure comprehensive coverage of mechanistic literature. Results show a shift from early musculoskeletal‑focused studies to recent clinical applications of music in systemic i…

Electrophysiological evidence that musical experience affects spatial auditory perception.

Musical experience is associated with enhanced auditory abilities, but it remains unclear how these benefits are expressed across different stages of spatial auditory processing. Therefore, we examined participants with and without musical experience using a spatial auditory oddball paradigm with multiple spatial deviations under both unattended and attended conditions. Behavioral performance, event-related potentials, and phase-locking value (PLV)-based functional connectivity were jointly analyzed to characterize spatial auditory processing at behavioral, local neural, and network levels. Pa…

Consistency and variability in pitch and tempo in infants' everyday musical lives.

Most North American infants hear music every day. Familiar songs are especially effective in capturing infants' attention, influencing their social behavior, and regulating their emotional responses. To the extent that songs are familiar because they are repeated over time, quantifying song features across renditions will yield insights into their powerful roles in organizing early human behavior. Comprehensive theories of musical development and auditory learning must consider the contexts in which infants' emerging abilities are observed, and the nature of the stimuli available to them in th…

Structure of Musical Dislikes: Findings From Multiple Genres and Countries.

Musical taste shapes social life and personal identity, yet research has focused mainly on why people like music, leaving the equally powerful phenomenon of musical dislikes largely unexamined. Building on recent work identifying core reasons for musical aversion, this study examined the psychological structure, genre associations, individual difference predictors, and cross-cultural variation of musical dislikes across 49 genres in Australia, China, Singapore, and the United States (N = 1078). Using network psychometrics and latent variable modeling, we identified five dimensions underlying a…

Music Therapy and Art Therapy in the Treatment of Patients With Mental Disorders.

The growing interest in non-pharmacological adjuncts to psychiatric treatment has brought creative therapies, such as art therapy and music therapy, to the forefront of mental health research. We hypothesized that structured sessions of art therapy, music therapy and their combination, integrated into standard inpatient psychiatric care, would lead to a more significant reduction in symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improvement in patients' psycho-emotional state. This study, conducted in Beijing, China, spanning the years 2021-2023, involved the collaboration of two clinics and the part…

Harmonious ageing: a narrative review of music therapy in the biomedical literature.

PURPOSE: As the global population of older adults rises, the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030) advocates for disease prevention, management, and enhancing overall wellbeing in older adults. We reviewed the MEDLINE literature under the MeSH term "music therapy" (MT), for its role in promoting healthy ageing. METHODS: A systematic search of the MEDLINE biomedical database (Ovid) was conducted using "MT" and "Ageing" as keywords, retrieving relevant full-text studies in English. Preference was given to more recent studies with higher levels of evidence. The studies were categor…

Is Pupil Response to Speech and Music in Toddlers with Cochlear Implants Asymmetric?

Background: Ear advantage (EA) reflects hemispheric asymmetries in auditory processing. While a right-ear advantage (REA) for speech and a left-ear advantage (LEA) for music are well documented in typically developing individuals, it is unclear how these patterns manifest in young children with cochlear implants (CIs). This study investigated whether pupillometry could reveal asymmetric listening efforts in toddlers with bilateral CIs when listening to speech and music under monaural stimulation. Methods: Thirteen toddlers (mean age = 36.2 months) with early bilateral CIs participated. Pupilla…

Music-based interventions in the treatment of eating disorders: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Eating disorders (EDs) are potentially life-threatening conditions characterized by persistent eating- and body-related disturbances that negatively impact nutritional intake, psychological well-being, and physical health. While psychological therapies remain the primary treatment for patients with EDs, music-based interventions (MBIs) show significant promise for addressing symptoms in clinical practice. However, little is known about the methods employed in these interventions or their effectiveness in addressing or improving ED outcomes. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelin…

Frontoparietal network topology as a neural marker of musical perceptual abilities.

Why are some individuals more musical than others? Neither cognitive testing nor classical localizationist neuroscience alone can provide a complete answer. Here, we test how the interplay of brain network organization and cognitive function delivers graded perceptual abilities in a distinctively human capacity. We analyze multimodal magnetic resonance imaging, cognitive, and behavioral data from 200+ participants, focusing on a canonical working memory network encompassing prefrontal and posterior parietal regions. Using graph theory, we examine structural and functional frontoparietal networ…
