METHODS: The population-based Ural Eye and Medical Study was conducted in a rural and urban region in Bashkortostan/Russia. Carotidynia is a rare presentation of atypical neck and face pain, which is due to inflammation around the carotid artery. Symptoms can get aggravated by head and neck movements, jaw movements and deglutition. It is usually a self- limiting illness, and it is treated conservatively with analgesics. Because of it is rarity, and partly due to physician's lack of understanding, it remains underdiagnosed. Our case report aims to shed light on the importance of how its diagnosis cannot be missed.

A 51-year-old afebrile man visited the hospital with acute severe neck pain with stiff neck, but cervical CT showed no calcification around the odontoid process. Cervical MRI revealed prevertebral hyperintense area of edema at the C1-C5 vertebral bodies, providing the diagnosis of retropharyngeal calcific tendinitis. The patient was spared for lumbar puncture, and his symptoms swiftly disappeared only with oral NSAIDs.

The upper aerodigestive tract, specifically the cricopharyngeal area, is the most common site of foreign body impaction. Anatomically, this area is the first constriction of the oesophagus. Fish bones, one of the most common foreign bodies encountered in the throat, tend to get stuck in this area. The movement of this sharp-edged foreign body upon swallowing will induce odynophagia and an acute onset of neck pain. We report a case of a healthy elderly man who complained of sudden anterior neck pain and odynophagia after eating yellowtail scad fish.
