A Cross-Sectional Survey on Professionals to Assess Health Needs of Newly Arrived Migrants in Spain.

Heightened conflicts and lack of safety due to reasons related to economic, social, ethnic, religious, sexual orientation, political, or nationality matters have increased migratory movements during the last, few decades. Unfortunately, when migrants arrive in new territories, they can face many barriers. For example, in Spain, some migrants have difficulties in accessing health services. The main objective of this study was to describe, from the perspective of social and healthcare professionals, health needs and barriers faced among migrants who recently arrived in Spain when accessing the h

Validation of a new objective method to assess lipid layer thickness without the need of an interferometer.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to develop and validate new metrics to objectively assess the lipid layer thickness (LLT) through the analysis of grey intensity values obtained from the Placido disk pattern reflected onto the tear film. METHODS: Ocular surface parameters were measured using Oculus Keratograph 5 M in 94 healthy volunteers (43.8 ± 26.8 years). Subjects' LLT was subjectively classified into 4 groups using an interferometry-based grading scale. New metrics based on the intensity of the Placido disk images were calculated and compared between groups. The repeatability of the new metrics

Geriatric assessments and frailty scores in multiple myeloma patients: a needed tool for individualized treatment?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Multiple myeloma is a disease of elderly adults. Improvement in survival has occurred because of biological insights and novel agents. Therapeutic options involve choices today, thus have become more complex. Demographics have led to an increased number of elderly patients and age may be associated with a poorer outcome but is not the only prognostic predictor today. RECENT FINDINGS: To evaluate patients' health status rather than their chronological age alone, frailty scores and functional geriatric assessments are used to identify prognostic groups, avoid adverse events,

Early Procalcitonin Assessment in the Emergency Department in Patients with Intra-Abdominal Infection: An Excess or a Need?

Background: Intra-abdominal infection (IAI) is a wide range of intra-abdominal disease. Management involves empirical therapy and source control. Procalcitonin (PCT) has been suggested to assist in defining individual infection status and delivering individualized therapy. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects on patient outcomes of an early procalcitonin (PCT) assessment (in the emergency department [ED]) in patients with IAI. Methods: This was a retrospective, mono-centric study evaluating consecutive patients admitted to the ED from 2015 to 2019 with diagnosis of IAI. Accordi

Orthodontic treatment need and timing: Assessment of evolutive malocclusion conditions and associated risk factors.

AIM: Orthodontic treatment need indexes are indispensable tools for collecting aepidemiological information, to define the need for clinical intervention on a graduated risk scale and to monitor the evolution of clinical conditions over time. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the prevalence of malocclusion and associated risk factors, and to compare the prevalence of malocclusion related to children's growth. Investigating the correlation between malocclusion and dental occlusion development is crucial to define orthodontic timing and the most suitable treatment modalities. MATERIAL

Surveillance system assessment in Guinea: Training needed to strengthen data quality and analysis, 2016.

The 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease outbreak revealed the fragility of the Guinean public health infrastructure. As a result, the Guinean Ministry of Health is collaborating with international partners to improve compliance with the International Health Regulations and work toward the Global Health Security Agenda goals, including enhanced case- and community-based disease surveillance. We assessed the case-based disease surveillance system during October 1, 2015-March 31, 2016, in the Boffa prefecture of Guinea. We conducted onsite interviews with public health staff at the peripheral (health c

Assessing the perioperative communication needs of a patient with learning disabilities: An holistic case study approach.

Patients should be at the heart of everything we do. The aim should always be to achieve healthcare outcomes by involving patients fully in their own care, with decisions made in partnership with clinicians, rather than by clinicians alone: 'no decision about me, without me' (DH 2012). This article details a plan of care for an 18 year old male patient with a moderate level of learning disability who was scheduled for a tonsillectomy at a local NHS trust hospital. It focuses on the management of the patient's anxiety, nausea and pain. In accordance with the Health and Care Professions Council'

Unraveling the Role of Vegetables in Spreading Antimicrobial-Resistant Bacteria: A Need for Quantitative Risk Assessment.

In recent years, vegetables gain consumer attraction due to their reputation of being healthy in combination with low energy density. However, since fresh produce is often eaten raw, it may also be a source for foodborne illness. The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria might pose a particular risk to the consumer. Therefore, this review aims to present the current state of knowledge concerning the exposure of humans to antibiotic-resistant bacteria via food of plant origin for quantitative risk assessment purposes. The review provides a critical overview of available information on hazar

Platelet reactivity tests for assessing antiplatelet drug response: what the clinician needs to know.

Antiplatelet therapy is a cornerstone in the treatment of cardiovascular disease to prevent ischemic events. Various tests have become clinically available to measure platelet function after antiplatelet treatment. A wide interpatient variability in the magnitude of platelet inhibition has been demonstrated in numerous studies, especially in response to clopidogrel. Several reasons including clinical, pharmacological and genetic factors have been identified. High on-clopidogrel platelet reactivity has been linked to adverse clinical outcome, in particular to stent thrombosis after percutaneous

Elective day-case laparoscopic cholecystectomy: a formal assessment of the need for outpatient follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is performed routinely as day-case surgery. Most hospital trusts have a policy of no routine postoperative outpatient follow-up although there are no formal guidelines on this. The aim of this retrospective study was to identify the incidence of complications, the degree of symptom resolution and patient satisfaction with a view to formally appraising the need for outpatient follow-up. METHODS: Patients who underwent LC in the period between February 2011 and June 2012 were contacted retrospectively by telephone. A standardised question

Selecting infants with OM that need referral and further assessment: creating a case-finding instrument.

OBJECTIVE: In the Netherlands, many children are surgically treated for OM. Recent publications question the need for surgical treatment in common uncomplicated OM, although there is certainly a subgroup of infants that do need further assessment and possible treatment. The present study explores the possibility of using known and presumed risk factors for OM as an instrument for selecting and routing an infant with OM to further care. METHODS: Two questionnaires were used. A questionnaire embracing a wide range of OM-related factors was sent to 6531 children aged nine months that were routin
