First Molecular Genetic Characterization of Skene's Gland Adenocarcinoma.

Primary urethral adenocarcinomas are very rare neoplasms accounting for <10% of all urethral carcinomas. Site of their origin is unclear, but they seem to arise from Skene's paraurethral glands, which is the female homologue of the male prostate. The aim of this article is to report the first case of Skene's gland adenocarcinoma in which a molecular genetic profiling was performed. The patient was a 73-year-old woman with a polypoid lesion sized 3 × 2 cm located at the interface between the bladder neck and the proximal urethra. Transurethral resection was performed and small tissue fragments

Extracranial metastasis of gliobastoma: Three illustrative cases and current review of the molecular pathology and management strategies.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and the most malignant primary brain tumor in adults, accounting for ~12-15% of all intracranial neoplasms. Despite advances in surgical, medical and radiation therapies, the mortality of GBM remains high, with a median survival ranging between 40 and 70 weeks. Similar to other primary brain tumors, the extracranial metastasis of GBM is extremely rare, occurring in <2% of patients. To demonstrate the clinical characteristics of this rare tumor, we herein present three cases of extracranial GBM metastasis: One to the lungs, which represents the longest repo

Incidence of malignant diseases in humans injected with radium-224.

The "Spiess study" follows the health of 899 persons who received multiple injections of the short-lived alpha-particle emitter (224)Ra mainly between 1945 and 1955 for the treatment of tuberculosis, ankylosing spondylitis and some other diseases. In December 2007, 124 persons were still alive. The most striking health effect, observed shortly after (224)Ra injections, was a temporal wave of 57 malignant bone tumors. During the two most recent decades of observation, a significant excess of non-skeletal malignant diseases has become evident. Expected numbers of cases were computed from the age

Acute Presentation of a High-Grade Myxofibrosarcoma Originating in the Thoracic Wall: A Case Report.

We report the first case of a patient with myxofibrosarcoma (MFS) who presented acutely with a rib fracture and developed a rapidly expanding loculated hemothorax after chest trauma. The patient was taken to the operating room for evacuation of hemothorax, and samples and biopsy specimens were taken for cytologic and pathologic examination. Final report with immunohistochemical staining showed a high-grade MFS. After the procedure, there was clinical and radiological improvement, and the patient was followed up as an outpatient. Myxofibrosarcoma is a very rare and aggressive connective tissue

Cutaneous manifestations of lung cancer.

Skin findings can serve as a clue to internal disease. In this article, cutaneous manifestations of underlying lung malignancy are reviewed. Paraneoplastic dermatoses are rare, but when recognized early, can lead to early diagnosis of an underlying neoplasm. Malignancy-associated dermatoses comprise a broad group of hyperproliferative and inflammatory disorders, disorders caused by tumor production of hormonal or metabolic factors, autoimmune connective tissue diseases, among others. In this review, paraneoplastic syndromes associated with lung malignancy are discussed, including ectopic ACTH

Benign cementoblastoma: case report and review of the literature.

Benign cementoblastoma (BC) is a relatively rare odontogenic neoplasm characterized by the formation of a mass of cementum-like tissue connected to the root of a tooth. Clinically, BC has a slow and constant growth pattern, frequently accompanied by pain, and it promotes volume expansion on both the vestibular and lingual surfaces. Radiographically, it appears attached to the apical or lateral portion of the root of a tooth root as a densely radiopaque, well-circumscribed mass surrounded by a thick and uniform radiolucent halo. Treatment usually consists of surgical tooth extraction along with

Cancers of skin, bone, connective tissues, brain, eye, thyroid and other specified and unspecified sites in Inuit.

Low rates of skin cancer, both melanoma and non-melanoma, were observed in Inuit after 20 years of observation. Tumours of the brain and central nervous system, of the thyroid, bone and connective tissues and other specified sites occurred with rates similar to those in comparison populations in Denmark, Connecticut and Canada. These findings support that neither UV and ionizing radiation from nuclear fall-out, nor pollution of herbicides and pesticides in the Arctic area have yet had any noticeable impact on cancer risk. However, unspecified and secondary neoplasms constitute 7-8% of the tota

Mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body associated with a nevus.

A ciliary body tumor that was believed clinically to be a malignant melanoma developed in a 28-year-old woman and led to enucleation of her eye. The light microscopic appearance of the tumor was interpreted by light microscopy as a neurogenic neoplasm, possibly a choristomatous astrocytoma. Electron microscopic studies disclosed the smooth muscle origin of the tumor. Results of experimental embryologic studies performed on lower animals have proved that the neural crest contributes most of the connective tissues, "mesectoderm," of the globe and orbit in these species. The occurrence of hybrid

Orbital atypical lymphocytic panniculitis preceding conjunctival marginal zone lymphoma in the same patient with undifferentiated connective tissue disease: a case-based review.

The association between autoimmune diseases and lymphoproliferative disorders is well established. It is also recognized that the skin and deep subcutaneous tissue can be affected by lymphocytic infiltrates in autoimmune diseases, a hallmark of lupus erythematosus profundus or lupus panniculitis (LP). To present an unusual lymphoproliferative disorder in a patient with undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD). A 60-year-old female was diagnosed in 2019 with UCTD. Use of Tocilizumab to Treat Arthritis Associated with Mixed Connective Tissue Disease Complicated by Ovarian Teratoma: A Case Report.

Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is characterized by mixed features of systemic lupus erythematosus, systemic sclerosis, and polymyositis/dermatomyositis and is rare in children. Here, we report a case of MCTD in a 10-year-old girl who presented at our hospital with arthralgia, Raynaud's phenomenon, and fatigue. Blood tests were positive for anti-U1-ribonucleoprotein (RNP) antibodies and for rheumatoid factors (RFs) IgG-RF and anti-galactose-deficient IgG. Levels of myogenic enzymes and hypergammaglobulinemia were elevated. Macrophages were prominent in bone marrow, with scattered phagoc

Tumor-induced osteomalacia.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is one of paraneoplastic syndromes characterized by hypophosphatemia caused by excessive actions of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23). Since the cloning of FGF23 about 20 years ago, more widespread awareness of this disease has been achieved. However, there still remain several difficulties in the management of patients with this disease. In this review, these clinical problems are discussed together with the physiological and pathophysiological functions of FGF23. Personal proposals in the management of patients with suspected patients with tumor-induced osteomala

[Clinical characteristics in 40 patients with longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis and connective tissue disease].

Objective: Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) could be seen in patients with connective tissue disease (CTD), especially systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) or primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). Some patients are combined with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD)(termed CTD-LETM-NMOSD) while others without (termed CTD-LETM-non-NMOSD). The aim of this study is to compare the clinical characteristics of CTD-LETM-NMOSD patients to CTD-LETM-non-NMOSD patients. Methods: We retrospectively collected data from 40 CTD patients with LETM who were admitted to the Department of

Burosumab in tumor-induced osteomalacia: A case report.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare cause of acquired hypophosphatemia due to the paraneoplastic overproduction of fibroblast growth factor-23. Unlike many causes of osteomalacia, tumor-induced osteomalacia is curable by resection of the offending tumor. If a patient has a tumor that is unidentifiable, unresectable, or makes the decision to forgo surgery, medical treatment is recommended. Burosumab (KRN23) is a fully human monoclonal antibody against fibroblast growth factor-23 that was recently approved for the treatment of X-linked hypophosphatemia. We present a case of tumor-induced osteom

[Tumor-induced Hypophosphatemic Osteomalacia Caused by a Chest Wall Tumor].

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic disease characterized by hypophosphatemia and skeletal undermineralization. Overproduction of fibroblast growth factor 23( FGF23) from the responsible tumor is reported to be a causative factor. Removing the tumor is the only effective treatment for TIO, but identifying the tumor is sometimes difficult. A 43-year-old man complained of heel pain 4 years earlier, and the pain gradually expanded to the whole body. As a blood test showed the elevation of the serum FGF23 level and hypophosphatemia, he was diagnosed with FGF23-related hypopho

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors. Survey of 8 cases from a single Mexican medical institution.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (PMT) is a morphologically heterogeneous soft tissue and bone neoplasm, producing a paraneoplastic syndrome due to phosphate wasting. These tumors produce fibroblast growth factor 23, which is implicated in renal tubule phosphate loss. Medical records of patients seen from 1999 to 2013 with osteomalacia associated or not with a tumor were reviewed. Clinical and laboratory data, radiographic studies, and follow-up of 8 patients were tabulated. Histologic features and the immunoprofile of the tumors were analyzed. There were 208 patients with osteomalacia, but only

Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and Papillary Thyroid Cancer: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) is a connective tissue disorder characterized by high titers of distinct antibodies: U1 ribonucleoprotein with clinical features seen in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), dermatomyositis (DM), polymyositis, and scleroderma. The association of SLE and DM with various cancers of the thyroid has been reported in the literature. However, there have been no reports associating MCTD with thyroid cancer. CASE REPORT: We present a 58-year-old woman diagnosed with MCTD with co-morbid interstitial lung disease that has rema

[Targeted treatment of rare connective tissue tumors and sarcomas].

The recent progress of the biology of the locally aggressive sarcomas of soft tissues and related connective tissue tumors enabled to reclassify molecular and histological entities of the disease. Six subgroups of sarcomas are identified with specific molecular alterations, the targeted treatments of which are the object of this article: 1) sarcomas with specific translocations with fusion oncogenes (DFSP, PVNS); 2) sarcomas with tyrosine kinase mutations (KIT in GIST); 3) tumors with deletion of tumor suppressor genes (TSC in the PEComes, NF1 involved in type 1 neurofibromatosis; 4) sarcomas

A case of mixed connective tissue disease complicated with thymic carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

We report the case of a 63-year-old woman who suffered from mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) complicated with thymic carcinoma and Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Although many systemic syndromes associated with thymoma and thymic carcinoma, i.e., myasthenia gravis, pure red cell aplasia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, are known, this is the first report of MCTD complicated with thymic carcinoma. It was suggested that MCTD may be a paraneoplastic syndrome associated with thymic carcinoma.

[Varicosis of the lower extremities as a consequence of connective tissue dysplasia].

An analysis was made of two groups of patients presenting with varicosis. The first group comprised 82 patients aged 15 to 30 years without risk factors. The second group accrued 85 patients with traditional risk factors: pregnancy and birth, overweight, considerable dynamic and physical loading, age from 30 to 50 years, and intake of hormonal contraceptives. It has been established that the key role in the development of varicosis is played by connective tissue dysplasia (CTD), the intensity of which predetermines the origination of phlebopathy and varicosis as well as the rate of their progr
