From skin to thyroid: incidental finding of dual-variant papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with squamous cell carcinoma.

Dear Editor, The occurrence of multiple primary neoplasms in a single patient is rare but well documented, and the incidental discovery of a previously undiagnosed thyroid carcinoma during lymph node dissection for another primary malignancy presents a unique diagnostic challenge. Previous reports have described incidental detection of papillary thyroid carcinoma during neck dissection for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the tongue, via Tc-99m prostate-specific membrane antigen imaging in a patient with a negative fine-needle aspiration (FNA) result, and during oncologic staging for esophagea

A Case Series of Primary Cutaneous Sarcomatoid Carcinoma With Aberrant Smooth Muscle Actin Expression: A Clinicopathologic and Immunophenotypic Study.

Primary cutaneous sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma can show significant histologic overlap with other malignant spindle cell tumors, posing a diagnostic challenge. Even with a wide array of immunohistochemical markers, the exact line of differentiation can be a challenge to identify in some cases. The picture is further complicated by the aberrant expression of myofibroblastic markers [such as smooth muscle actin (SMA)] by these neoplasms, along with a concomitant loss of conventional epithelial markers. The histologic differential diagnoses of primary cutaneous sarcomatoid squamous cell ca

Primary hyperparathyroidism: fifth parathyroid intrathymic adenoma in a young patient.

The clinical case described in this paper deals with a young female patient affected by primary hyperparathyroidism caused by an ectopic parathyroid adenoma of a supernumerary intrathymic parathyroid. The patient had hypercalcemia, in association with increased levels of parathormone, but was otherwise asymptomatic. Genetics tests for mutation of the MEN1, HRPT2, and CaSR genes were negative. She therefore underwent laboratory and instrumental tests but localization results in the neck were negative--only an intrathymic nodule was visualized. The complete surgical ablation of the thymus was co

Second malignant neoplasia in patients with T1 glottic cancer treated with radiation.

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate incidence, site of occurrence and outcome of second malignant neoplasia (SMN) in patients with T1 glottic cancer treated with radiation. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective. METHODS: Between February 1964 and May 1993, 158 patients with T1 squamous carcinoma of the larynx were treated with definitive radiation. Incidence, site (aerodigestive tract or not) and outcome of SMN were analyzed. Median follow-up was 63 months (range, 12-245 mo). RESULTS: Thirty-four patients developed SMN, for an overall incidence of 22%. Twenty-four (67%) SMNs occurred in an aero-upper-d

Multiple malignant tumors in a patient with familial chordoma, a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chordoma is a rare bone tumor that is typically resistant to chemotherapy and is associated with genetic abnormalities of the T-box transcription factor T (TBXT) gene, which encodes the transcription factor brachyury. Brachyury is felt to be a major contributor to the development of chordomas. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 67-year-old woman who developed an undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in her thigh. Despite treatment with standard chemotherapy regimens, she had a rapidly progressive course of disease with pulmonary metastases and passed away 8 months from diagnosis with

Multiple poromas in a bone marrow transplant recipient: A case report.

A poroma is a benign epithelial neoplasm that most commonly presents as a solitary papule on the palm or sole. We report the case of a 25-year-old male, with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia, who developed multiple poromas on the feet. Poromatosis - the occurrence of multiple poromas - has been described in six adults and one child; it appears to be more prevalent in patients with a history of lymphoproliferative disorder or radiation exposure.

Synchronous and metachronous diagnosis of multiple primary cancers.

AIMS: In the time period near to the diagnosis of a new cancer, other tumors (synchronous cancers), especially slow-growing tumors, may be detected because several diagnostic examinations are performed. The frequency of synchronous in comparison with metachronous carcinomas has been evaluated in a population-based series of multiple primary cancers. METHODS: The case series of multiple primary cancers of the Tuscany Tumor Registry, incident during the period 1985-1991 was analyzed. For each site of a second independent tumor, the proportions of synchronous (diagnosed within 2 months of the fi

[Cystadenocarcinoma complicating urachal cysts. A case report and review of the literature (author's transl)].

A 50-year-old man developed a cystadenocarcinoma on a large urachal cyst. Only 15 similar cases have been reported in the published literature, equivalent to less than 10 p. cent of cancers of the urachus. These tumours present certain clinical, radiological, endoscopic, ultrasonographic, and pathological characteristics. As against solid urachal tumours, there is little controversy as to their vestigial origin from the remains of the allantoid canal. Their prognosis is poor, regional recurrences and pulmonary metastases, and complicated or uncomplicated urachal cysts should therefore be syste

[Placental chorangioma: clinic-pathological approach of a case in Colombia].

Chorangioma is a tumor of vascular origin placental, the most frequent among primary placental non-trophoblastic tumors; however, it is found in about 1% of placental pathology case studies. Chorangioma represents a benign neoplasm with proliferation of capillaries and villous stroma associated to multiple gestations, preeclampsia and birth defects in the fetus. This paper reports the case of a 38-year pregnant woman (29 gestation weeks). She had eleven pregnancies, nine deliveries and one abortion. During perinatal assessment patient showed severe polyhydramnios and acute fetal distress. The

Crescentic Glomerulonephritis in Association With Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Clear renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common primary renal tumor originating within the renal cortex. It is responsible for 75% to 85% of all primary renal neoplasms. Multiple risk factors are associated with the development of RCC, the most common being smoking. On some occasions, RCC has been linked to some autoimmune conditions, but data is limited. Especially, its association with glomerulonephritis (GN) is rare in literature and not fully understood. In this case report, we discuss a presentation of RCC associated with crescentic GN.

Clinicopathological features, prognostic factor analysis, and survival nomogram of patients with double primary cancers involving lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Although the incidence of double primary cancers (DPCs) involving lung cancer is rising, they have not been studied sufficiently. This study retrospectively analyzed the clinicopathological and prognostic characteristics of DPC patients with lung cancer and developed a survival nomogram to predict the individual OS rates. METHODS: We included 103 DPC patients with lung cancer from Shengjing Hospital between 2016 and 2021. Based on the 6-month cancer occurrence interval, the cases were categorized as synchronous DPCs (sDPCs) or metachronous DPCs (mDPCs). Furthermore, the mDPCs were

Multiple primary malignancies involving lung cancer: a single-center experience.

OBJECTIVE: Currently, unlike earlier years, patients affected by multiple primary malignancies (MPM) are significantly increased, thus representing a clinical-pathologic category worthy of attention. Their clinical features and prognosis still need to be studied thoroughly, and this is the aim of our study. METHODS: Patients with MPM involving lung cancer admitted in our center between January 2006 and December 2016 were considered. Parametric and nonparametric testing was used for statistical comparisons. Univariate and multivariate analysis was used to evaluate the variables associated with

Synchronous two distinct neuroendocrine lung cancer lesions.

The synchronous primary lung tumors is a rare condition and presented patient is the first reported case of simultaneous two distinct neuroendocrine lung cancer lesions in the same lobe. We present the case of a 55-year-old woman with synchronous two distinct neuroendocrine lung cancer lesions in the right upper lobe. Initially she showed no signs or symptoms related to lung lesions and was admitted to Thoracic Surgery Ward for the investigation of two oval, solitary pulmonary nodules (11 and 19 mm in diameter) detected on a chest X-ray performed three months earlier. The radiological imaging

A second primary malignancy in a cohort of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer--characteristics of diagnosis.

As the life expectancy of cancer patients has been extended because of earlier diagnosis and improved therapeutic modalities, second primary tumors are being diagnosed more frequently. We have examined the clinical characteristics of 38 second primary tumors in a cohort of patients diagnosed with epithelial ovarian cancer in our department over a 6-year period. The most frequent neoplasm associations were in decreasing order of occurrence: ovary-breast, ovary-endometrium, and ovary-gastro-intestinal tract. Most heterochronous second primary tumors have been diagnosed following patient symptoms

[Transitional carcinomas of the urinary tract: synchronous and metachronous lesions].

OBJECTIVE: The urothelium is a pseudostratified cylindrical epithelium that lines the calices, renal pelvis, urethers, bladder, part of the urethra and part of the prostate ducts. Transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) is a malignant neoplasia that can appear in any site where urothelium is present, being the bladder the most frequently affected organ. We performed an analysis of our experience and conducted a literature-based metanalysis to evaluate the coexistence of tumoral lesions at different locations in the urinary tract. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between 1983 and 1993, 397 patients with TCC le

Primary cerebral lymphoma: an association with craniopharyngioma or cadaveric growth hormone therapy?

OBJECTIVES: To present the first case of primary cerebral lymphoma associated with craniopharyngioma or previous cadaveric growth hormone therapy. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 22-year-old male shop assistant of European descent presented with unilateral uveitis and was found to have a high grade primary cerebral lymphoma. This occurred nine years after successful surgical resection of a craniopharyngioma without the administration of adjuvant radiotherapy. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: There was initial radiological resolution of cerebral lymphoma after cranial irradiation. Recurrence was noted 10 weeks

[The surgery of pulmonary metastases. The surgical indications and technical aspects of lung resections for metastases].

Surgery for pulmonary metastases is an accepted method of treatment for many kinds of malignant neoplasms, because of favorable results in five-year and ten-year survival. At present several technical aspects are being debate (operative indications, method of thoracic access, procedure of lung resection, approach of bilateral lesions), with the aim of improving the number of patients undergoing radical excision of all pulmonary metastatic foci. The present paper summarizes a recent experience (1989-1992) in the treatment of pulmonary metastases in 55 patients, with special reference to tactica

Multiple melanoma in a burns scar.

It is well known that up to 2% of chronic burn scar lesions can transform into malignant tumours, however, melanoma formation at these sites is extremely rare. This case report describes a burns case, which progressed to four melanomas in a 78-year-old male patient's little finger, 40 years after the initial incident. The patient underwent 3 mm punch biopsies, then digital amputation of the finger with pathology-proven melanoma. Histopathology investigation demonstrated three melanoma in situ and one invasive melanoma with a Breslow thickness of 1 mm. These findings are rare with few reports o
