Documentation-derived nursing process indicators and in-hospital outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction undergoing PCI: A cohort study.

In-hospital outcomes after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention remain variable. Documentation-derived nursing process indicators may act as proxy markers of clinical acuity, surveillance intensity, and care complexity, but their association with short-term outcomes remains unclear. This single-center retrospective cohort study included consecutive adults with AMI. Nursing process indicators were extracted from routine nursing records, including assessment frequency, monitoring intensity, documentation density, and selected observational items. The

A quasi-experimental study on conservative nursing measures for preventing phlebitis in chemotherapy patients.

Phlebitis is a common and potentially serious complication among cancer patients receiving peripheral intravenous chemotherapy, leading to patient discomfort, treatment interruptions, and increased healthcare costs. Preventative nursing interventions, including normal saline flush, cold application, and magnesium sulfate application, have shown promise in reducing the incidence and severity of phlebitis. However, evidence regarding their effectiveness remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of conservative nursing measures on the incidence of phlebitis among patients undergoin

Exploratory modeling of etiological factors for cardiovascular diseases within a structured nursing follow-up program.

BACKGROUND: The prevention of etiological factors for cardiovascular diseases is a critical contemporary health priority. A significant knowledge gap exists regarding robust studies that analyze cardiovascular risk factors through the lens of nursing diagnoses. Modeling these factors allows for the prioritization of variables that should be targeted in clinical care plans. This study contributes to the advancement of nursing practice and the development of structured care programs focused on cardiovascular risk. The objective was to develop exploratory models of etiological factors for cardiov

The association between perioperative activity levels and discharge outcomes after radical cystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Early postoperative ambulation shortens the recovery of radical cystectomy (RC). This study aims to evaluate the potential associations between perioperative activity levels, measured by wearable fitness trackers (WFTs), and discharge outcomes after RC. METHODS: In this prospective study, patients undergoing RC between 2017 and 2019 wore WFTs from a maximum of 2 weeks preoperatively, throughout their hospitalization, and up to 2 weeks after discharge. Activity levels were recorded as daily steps and calorie expenditure. Primary outcomes of interest were discharge disposition to

Worse cholecystectomy outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic: were staff shortages or a change in patient case-mix the culprit?

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly impacted the field of surgery, mostly through infectious risks, staff shortages, reduced hospital capacities, and changed patient pathways. Prompted by an increase in wound complications, we performed an in-depth analysis of an example surgical procedure. METHODS: A consecutive cohort of 195 patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy was studied retrospectively. Data of patients receiving cholecystectomy before, during, and after the peak of the pandemic were compared. The potential influence of patient characteristics, pandemic phase, an

Screening for rheumatic heart disease: evaluation of a focused cardiac ultrasound approach.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a major public health problem worldwide. Although early diagnosis by echocardiography may potentially play a key role in developing active surveillance, systematic evaluation of simple approaches in resource poor settings are needed. METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively compared focused cardiac ultrasound (FCU) to a reference approach for RHD screening in a school children population. FCU included (1) the use of a pocket-sized echocardiography machine, (2) nonexpert staff (2 nurses with specific training), and (3) a simplified set of echocard

Factors present when battered women kill.

Twelve women, imprisoned for killing their abusive male partners, were interviewed to determine factors present in battering relationships that end in homicide. Threats to kill made by the abuser, daily alcohol use by the man, and the presence of a firearm in the home existed in the majority of these relationships. Psychological abuse (e.g., enforced isolation, humiliation, and degradation) was perceived as more devastating than physical abuse. Although an escalation in the severity and frequency of violence, the occurrence of sexual abuse, and women's suicidal threats were also present, subje

Nursing home applications--reasons and possible interventions.

BACKGROUND: With a rapidly ageing population like Singapore, the need for nursing homes will increase. Admission to a nursing home may be for medical and/or social reasons. We carried out case studies with the Care Liaison Service (CLS) of the Ministry of Health to determine reasons why the elderly applied for nursing home admission, and whether it was possible to prevent an admission. PATIENTS: During the 6-month study period, 331 applications were received, of which 280 (84.6%) were > or = 60 years. There was an equal distribution of male (50.4%) and female (49.6%) applicants. Applicants we
