Although medication-assisted treatment (MAT) effectively treats opioid use disorders (OUD), MAT access is restricted in criminal justice (CJ) settings. Macropods are commonly kept and exhibited species worldwide. Mortality records were reviewed for five species of macropods housed at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo from 1995 to 2016. One hundred sixty-seven deaths occurred including Western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus) (n = 22), Bennett's wallaby (M. rufogriseus) (n = 64), red kangaroo (M. rufus) (n = 56), wallaroo (M. robustus) (n = 9), and Tammar wallaby (M. eugenii) (n = 16). Histoplasmosis is a fungal disease resulting from inhalation of airborne spores of the organism Histoplasma capsulatum. The disease is endemic to the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys. Oral lesions are not common, but when present, they are usually associated with the severe disseminated form of histoplasmosis. Enterovirus D68 (EVD68) is an emerging pathogen associated with neurological complications, including temporary and permanent paralysis, and lethality. Currently, no EVD68-specific vaccines or antivirals are available.
