Effect of fracture location on rate of conversion to open reduction and clinical outcomes in pediatric Gartland type III supracondylar humerus fractures.

BACKGROUND: Supracondylar humerus fractures are the most common form of elbow fracture in children and adolescents. At present, treatment planning is based on the Gartland classification. Reduction and percutaneous pinning are done for Gartland type III fractures. In cases where closed reduction is unsuccessful, the procedure is converted to open reduction. However, there is no consensus on which patients are more likely to require conversion to open reduction. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fracture location on the rate of conversion to open reduction and clinical outc

A Retrospective Study of the Presentation, Imaging Findings, and Outcomes in 195 Patients with Maxillofacial Fractures Treated with Closed Reduction or Open Reduction with Internal Fixation.

BACKGROUND Maxillofacial fractures represent one of the most common forms of traumatic injuries, affecting both function and aesthetics, and are associated with significant morbidity and long-term sequelae. The incidence and distribution of these fractures vary considerably depending on demographic, socioeconomic, and geographic factors. This retrospective study from a single center aimed to evaluate the presentation, imaging findings, and outcomes in 195 patients with maxillofacial fractures treated with closed reduction or open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF). MATERIAL AND METHODS Cl

Secondary Procedures after Closed Reduction Percutaneous Pinning versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation of Phalanx Fractures: A Large Database Analysis.

Background: While functional and patient-reported outcomes are similar for closed reduction percutaneous pinning (CRPP) and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of phalanx fractures, controversy exists regarding optimal fixation choice. In this study, we tested the null hypotheses that there is no difference in (1) percentage of patients undergoing secondary procedures within 2 years, (2) therapy utilisation and (3) total costs following CRPP and ORIF of phalanx fractures. Methods: Using an administrative claims database, we identified patients undergoing CRPP or ORIF of phalanx fractures f

Implant-specific rates of post-operative displacement and reoperation in isolated greater tuberosity fracture open reduction and internal fixation.

BACKGROUND: Isolated fractures of the greater tuberosity (GT) comprise nearly 20% of the fractures of the proximal humerus. The Mutch classification categorizes these injuries by morphology into avulsion (Type I), split (Type 2), and depression (Type 3) patterns. While the efficacy of arthroscopic repair vs. open reduction and internal fixation is well-studied, there is less-convincing data on the comparative effectiveness of different open reduction and internal fixation constructs in GT fracture care. METHODS: A retrospective review analyzed patients with isolated GT fractures of the humeru

Anteromedial Tibia Plateau Fracture without Significant Ligamentous Injury Treated Successfully with Open Reduction and Internal Fixation: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of distal radius fractures (DRFs) has evolved throughout time. The current management practices typically entail the use of locking compression plates. The inclusion of locking plates with variable angle options made it easier for surgeons to handle comminuted fracture fragments. This study examines the functional and radiological results of DRFs treated using a variable angle locking compression plate. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 2022 and May 2024, a cohort of 25 patients with DRFs presented to the Department of Orthopaedics and was preoperatively examined bef

Impact of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists on postoperative outcomes following ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RA) are quickly growing in popularity as effective tools in the management of diabetes and weight loss. Despite this increased usage, there is a paucity of literature investigating the use of GLP-1RA in patients with ankle fractures. This study aims to compare the outcomes of patients undergoing ankle fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) receiving therapy with GLP-1RA to those not receiving treatment. A retrospective analysis was performed utilizing the TriNetX research network to query patients who underwent ankle fracture ORIF b

Presenteeism and Absenteeism Before and After Carpal Tunnel Release or Open Reduction and Internal Fixation for Distal Radius Fracture.

PURPOSE: The use of a person's hands is crucial to their ability to succeed at work. Hand pathologies can impact work success by increasing absenteeism (ie, not being able to go to work) and presenteeism (ie, being able to work but in a reduced capacity). In this study, we quantified employed patients' presenteeism and absenteeism following carpal tunnel release or surgical fixation of a distal radius fracture (DRF). METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 91 patients (carpal tunnel syndrome [CTS]: n = 62; DRF: n = 29) from June 2022 to December 2023 were included. Baseline patient charact
