A survey is presented of the ophthalmological findings in 74 patients with drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy, who underwent unilateral anterior temporal lobectomy 1960-1969 at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. At follow-up, 1970-1971, one to ten years following the operation, 81% of the patients had no or only few seizures. Preoperatively 11% of the patients suffered from strabismus as compared to an expected frequency of 5%, but this trend just falls short of statistical significance. Retinoblastoma (Rb) is the most common intraocular malignancy. If left untreated, Rb can result in death within 1-2 years. However, with timely detection and proper treatment, the survival rate is as high as 98%. The primary goal of Rb treatment is to eliminate cancer and save the patient's life, while the second goal includes preserving the eye and vision. PURPOSE: To characterize the timing of pre-residency commitment to pediatric ophthalmology and to examine the factors influencing that decision.
METHODS: A cross-sectional, anonymous survey was distributed electronically to pediatric ophthalmologists and fellows who committed to the subspecialty prior to residency. The four-item questionnaire assessed timing of commitment, the single most influential factor in subspecialty selection, career plan certainty, and educational debt burden. Associations were evaluated using Pearson's chi-square tests with effect size quantified by Cramér's V.
