Painful gastric glitch: an acute epigastric pain triggered by specific food as a new phenotype of postprandial epigastric pain syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Postprandial epigastric pain syndrome was recently suggested as a disorder of gut-brain interaction. We assessed gastroduodenal motility and histology in patients with acute epigastric pain triggered by specific foods. METHODS: In this case-control, exploratory study, patients with epigastric pain and matched controls underwent upper endoscopy to exclude organic disease and gastroduodenal biopsies for histology. All participants underwent a dynamic gastroduodenal MRI, with a baseline acquisition followed by a food-trigger intake and three MRI acquisitions at 15-minute inte

Kinematic synergies show good consistency when extracted with a low-cost markerless device and a marker-based motion tracking system.

Recently, markerless tracking systems, such as RGB-Depth cameras, have spread to overcome some of the limitations of the gold standard marker-based tracking systems. Although these systems are valuable substitutes for human motion analysis, as they guarantee higher flexibility, faster setup time and lower costs, their tracking accuracy is lower with respect to marker-based systems. Many studies quantified the error made by markerless systems in terms of body segment length estimation, articular angles, and biomechanics, concluding that they are appropriate for many clinical applications relate

High-efficient luminescence induced by the restriction of benzothiazole group torsion for the HBT-H-H molecule in the aggregate state.

The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effect has been demonstrated to have great potential application in different areas, from organic electronics to biomedical research and physical process monitoring. In general, molecules with AIE characteristic exhibit fluorescence enhancement in the aggregated state by restricting intramolecular motion consumption. The combination of AIE and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) is meaningful for promoting luminescence. Recently, HBT-H-H molecule, as a derivative of 2-(2-Hydroxyphenyl)benzothiazole (HBT), has drawn extensive attention fro

CArdiac and REspiratory adaptive Computed Tomography (CARE-CT): a proof-of-concept digital phantom study.

Current respiratory 4DCT imaging for high-dose rate thoracic radiotherapy treatments are negatively affected by the complex interaction of cardiac and respiratory motion. We propose an imaging method to reduce artifacts caused by thoracic motion, CArdiac and REspiratory adaptive CT (CARE-CT), that monitors respiratory motion and ECG signals in real-time, triggering CT acquisition during combined cardiac and respiratory bins. Using a digital phantom, conventional 4DCT and CARE-CT acquisitions for nineteen patient-measured physiological traces were simulated. Ten respiratory bins were acquired f

Lack of early pattern stimulation prevents normal development of the alpha (Y) retinal ganglion cell population in the cat.

Binocular deprivation of pattern vision (BD) early in life permanently impairs global motion perception. With the SMI-32 antibody against neurofilament protein (NFP) as a marker of the motion-sensitive Y-cell pathway (Van der Gucht et al. [2001] Cereb. Cortex 17:2805-2819), we analyzed the impact of early BD on the retinal circuitry in adult, perceptually characterized cats (Burnat et al. [2005] Neuroreport 16:751-754). In controls, large retinal ganglion cells exhibited a strong NFP signal in the soma and in the proximal parts of the dendritic arbors. The NFP-immunoreactive dendrites typicall

Changes in the vestibular function during space flight.

An analysis of observations and investigations carried out in space flight has shown that some cosmonauts and astronauts have experienced vestibular disorders during the transition to weightlessness. Vestibular-sensory disorders include: Spatial illusions (the feelings of falling down, being in an upside-down position, the sensations of rotation of the craft or the body) and vertigo occurring during the onset of the orbital flight and head movements; Feelings, similar to those experienced in response to Coriolis accelerations on the Earth, which occasionally develop in weightlessness during th

Imaging assessment of calcinosis in juvenile dermatomyositis: a narrative review.

Calcinosis is a severe manifestation of juvenile and adult idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, which can lead to pain, limited range of motion, disfigurement, and infection. It is more common in juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, especially in juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM). Calcinosis can be visible on cutaneous surfaces, although can also present in muscles and internal organs, making a thorough assessment difficult without imaging modalities. In this narrative review, we discuss different imaging modalities used in evaluating JDM-associated calcinosis including X-ray, computed tom

External Beam Radiation Therapy for Liver Metastases.

Stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR) commonly is used for small liver metastases. Modern conformal radiotherapy techniques, including 3-dimensional conformal radiotherapy and intensity-modulated radiation therapy, enable the safe delivery of SABR to small liver volumes. For larger tumors, the safe delivery of SABR can be challenging due to a more limited volume of healthy normal liver parenchyma and the proximity of the tumor to radiosensitive organs, such as the stomach, duodenum, and large intestine. Controlling respiratory motion, the use of image guidance, and increasing the number of

Evaluation and Preparation of the Baseball Player in the Athletic Training Room.

A critical aspect of the care of the baseball player involves understanding injury patterns, workload tolerance, and objective markers that can aid in identifying predisposing factors to injury. After injury, a well-structured rehabilitation program can return many players to the field. The greatest challenge is not only returning them to the previous level of performance but also preventing reinjury and maintaining durability. Potential factors implicated in the most common injuries include deficits in range of motion, balance, core strength, lumbopelvic control, thoracic rotation, posture, a

Proton Therapy in the Management of Pancreatic Cancer.

Radiation therapy plays a central role in the treatment of pancreatic cancer. While generally shown to be feasible, proton irradiation, particularly when an ablative dose is planned, remains a challenge, especially due to tumor motion and the proximity to organs at risk, like the stomach, duodenum, and bowel. Clinically, standard doses of proton radiation treatment have not been shown to be statistically different from photon radiation treatment in terms of oncologic outcomes and toxicity rates as per non-randomized comparative studies. Fractionation schedules and concurrent chemotherapy combi

Feasibility and potential benefits of daily online adaptive radiotherapy for head and neck cancer without margin reduction using an RTT-only workflow.

INTRODUCTION: Online adaptive radiotherapy (oART) may improve head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment, where anatomical changes during radiotherapy (RT) are common. However, oART is resource-intensive and clinical data are limited. We conducted a prospective feasibility trial implementating an RT technologist (RTT)-led workflow to evaluate dosimetric outcomes, workflow strategies, and intrafractional motion in daily oART. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten patients receiving curatively intended oART (33-34 fractions) using standard PTV margins were included (NCT: 07506902). For each fraction, a scheduled

Zebrafish embryos are robust to local mechanical perturbations.

The investigation of morphogenesis during organism development has massively benefited from the interaction between developmental biology and biophysics, which gave new quantitative insights into nature's physical working principles. The process of zebrafish epiboly provides a beautiful model system as cells exhibit collective migration, meanwhile requiring symmetry breaking for gastrulation and the subsequent tissue differentiation. These elegantly robust processes are facilitated by both biochemical and mechanical cues. Here we test the hypothesis that the future body axis is robust against

Characterizing Organic Gunshot Residues with Low-Frequency Raman and Terahertz Vibrational Spectroscopies.

Low-frequency (10-300 cm-1) vibrational spectroscopy is a promising method for enhancing the detection of solid-state organic gunshot residues (OGSRs) which serve as vital trace evidence in crime scene investigations. The use of low-frequency Raman spectroscopy (LFRS) and terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) allows for the measurement of material-specific lattice vibrations that originate not only from individual molecules, but also from motions between molecules in the solid-state. Together, these vibrations yield unique spectral profiles for compound recognition and characterization.

Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness: a phenotype-oriented approach to practical management.

INTRODUCTION: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a chronic functional vestibular disorder defined by persistent dizziness, unsteadiness, or non-spinning vertigo exacerbated by upright posture, active or passive motion, and visually complex environments. In clinical practice, however, the diagnostic label alone is often insufficient to guide management, because patients differ substantially in the relative prominence of visual dependence, motion-postural burden, multisensory provocation, affective-hypervigilant mechanisms, and migraine overlap. OBJECTIVE: To propose a clinicall

Translation and Tilt Perceptual Thresholds Are Elevated in Meniere's Disease Compared With Vestibular Migraine.

OBJECTIVES: The clinical differentiation of two common vestibular disorders, Meniere's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM), remains challenging and is based on criteria provided by expert panels rather than the results of diagnostic tests. We therefore investigated the hypothesis that perceptual thresholds for passive motions that activate the inner ear vestibular sensors (canals, otolith organs) can be used to improve the clinical differentiation of MD and VM. DESIGN: Self-motion perceptual thresholds were measured in MD and VM patients using a multiaxis motion platform during movement

Different Biophysical Properties of Cell Surface α2,3- and α2,6-Sialoglycans Revealed by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Studies.

Sialoglycans on HeLa cells were labeled with a nitroxide spin radical through enzymatic glycoengineering (EGE)-mediated installation of azide-modified sialic acid (Neu5Ac9N3) and then click reaction-based attachment of a nitroxide spin radical. α2,6-Sialyltransferase (ST) Pd2,6ST and α2,3-ST CSTII were used for EGE to install α2,6- and α2,3-linked Neu5Ac9N3, respectively. The spin-labeled cells were analyzed by X-band continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to gain insights into the dynamics and organizations of cell surface α2,6- and α2,3-sialoglycans. Protocol to test path integration in mice using an L-maze behavioral assay.

Path integration (PI) is a component of navigation whereby an organism uses self-motion cues to estimate position and move toward a goal, without relying on external landmarks. PI deficits can predict cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease in humans. Here, we present a protocol to test PI in mice using a dry-land L-maze behavioral assay with three phases: habituation, training, and testing. This protocol may allow researchers to test for early disease in mouse models of neurodegeneration. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Graves et al.1.
