Osteogenesis imperfecta and combined orthodontics and orthognathic surgery: a case report on two siblings.

Osteogenesis imperfecta is a heterogeneous group of connective tissue diseases that is predominantly characterized by bone fragility and skeletal deformity. Two siblings with undiagnosed type I osteogenesis imperfecta underwent orthognathic surgery for the treatment of facial asymmetry and mandibular prognathism. The authors report two cases of combined orthodontics and orthognathic surgery in patients with type I osteogenesis imperfecta, mandibular prognathism, and facial asymmetry.

Applications of stem cells in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics: Current trends and future perspectives.

A simple overview of daily orthodontic practice involves use of brackets, wires and elastomeric modules. However, investigating the underlying effect of orthodontic forces shows various molecular and cellular changes. Also, orthodontics is in close relation with dentofacial orthopedics which involves bone regeneration. In this review current and future applications of stem cells (SCs) in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics have been discussed. For craniofacial anomalies, SCs have been applied to regenerate hard tissue (such as treatment of alveolar cleft) and soft tissue (such as treatmen…

Minimally invasive corticotomy in orthodontics using a three-dimensional printed CAD/CAM surgical guide.

The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative, minimally invasive, flapless corticotomy procedure in orthodontics. The STROBE guidelines were followed. Ten patients with severe dental crowding and a class I molar relationship were selected to receive orthodontic treatment with clear aligners and corticotomy-facilitated orthodontics. The mean age of these patients was 21 years (range 17-28, standard deviation 6.08 years); the male to female ratio was 2:1. The main outcome was a reduction in the total treatment time to correct dental crowding. The secondary…

Treatment of mandibular asymmetry by distraction osteogenesis and orthodontics: a report of four cases.

Distraction osteogenesis devices followed by hybrid functional appliance therapy and fixed orthodontic appliance therapy were used to correct a variety of maxillofacial skeletal and dental deformities in 4 patients. The patients underwent procedures to lengthen the mandibular ramus and body. Transcutaneous pins were used to activate the distraction devices. After achieving the desired skeletal position, the distraction devices were maintained for 2 to 3 months to allow ossification. Following distraction, functional orthodontic appliance therapy was initiated during growth to correct the cant

A medico-legal review of some current UK guidelines in orthodontics: a personal view.

This article is a critical analysis from a medico-legal perspective of some current authoritative UK clinical guidelines in orthodontics. Two clinical guidelines have been produced by the Royal College of Surgeons of England and four by the British Orthodontic Society. Each guideline is published with the analysis immediately following it. Following recent UK case law (Bolitho v City & Hackney Health Authority, 1997) which allows the courts to choose between two bodies of responsible expert medical opinion where they feel one opinion is not 'logical', it is likely that the UK courts will incre…

[The role of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery in the treatment of severe dentoskeletal anomalies].

So far the majority of patients with severe dento-facial discrepancies is been treated unfortunately in our country either by orthodontics or by surgery alone. Either way the improvement of dental occlusion and facial esthetics is far behind in excellence because of the nature and peculiarities of these malocclusions. Four cases of patients with severe dento-skeletal anomalies are presented in this paper two of which were treated by orthodontics and the other two by surgery alone. The diagnostic data of each patient before and right after the treatment procedure are described in detail with sp…

Emergencies in orthodontics. Part 1: Management of general orthodontic problems as well as common problems with fixed appliances.

Fixed appliance treatment is a popular treatment modality with a burgeoning increase in the numbers of children and adults realizing the benefits that can be gained. Appliance breakage is an unavoidable nuisance which is at best inconvenient, and at worst may result in significant pain or discomfort for the patient. General dental practitioners (GDPs) should have the practical knowledge of how to provide timely and appropriate orthodontic 'emergency treatment'. This will significantly reduce the sometimes considerable inconvenience and discomfort for both the patient and his/her parents, and t
